I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I am using the Claybuster Clones of the WAA12SL wad the 1100-12 for 1 ounce loads. (the pink ones) It appears that the the claybuster is around 1/8 inch longer than my 1 1/8 oz ones. When I drop and ounce of shot into it the shot is taller than the wad cup. Seems to me the claybuster 1oz is too tall and the cup is not deep enough to hold a full one ounce. The problem is when I try to crimp the final it gives me a buldged crimp and after 10 minutes they start to open up. So I have reduced the shot load between 7/8 and 1 ounce. Has anyone else seen this with claybusters? The 1 1/8 ounce wads work fine.
I'm running a mec 761 grabber with Winchester AA hulls.
THanks
Pete
As my feeble memory reminds me, I had a similar problem years ago. The wad maybe catching on the interior rim of the AA hull. I ONLY use the Spolar 1 oz. and 1 1/8 wads and never have a problem with any hull. Not cheap, but a reloaders dream. Fred
Trapcrazy, This might be to simple but try using a little more wad pressure to insure your wad is seating itself. Run about a half a dozen and see what happens.
Wad pressure!! What type of powder and how much are you using?I only use these wads in the new AA's so I can throw them away and not deal with them again! The claybuster is a softer plastic that gives a little so you can seat them past the interior rim of the new AA hull.
I use the same powder charge and wad on a MEC 9000 that does not indicate any wad pressure on the gauge when seating the wad....I am not familier with the crimp stations on the machine you mention but in case they are the same as the 9000 here goes...(1)Crimp starter- close until a lead pencil eraser just barely fits (2) Second station is the crimp punch and cam closer..lower the punch crimp until the petals are well below the rim then adjust the cam to close the hole in the center..The 3rd station on the 9000 just tapers the shoulder to make use in a autoloader easier. Note if you lower the last (tapering) station to excess you will cause a wrinkle in the shell just above the base wad. Ken
Pete, are you sure your throwing only one oz. of lead from your charge bar??? I load the same load and never had your problem. The one oz claybuster and the one and one/eight oz. claybuster wad are the same height overall, just the shotcup is shorter. Break-em all. Jeff
ClayBuster cloned that wad when the one-piece AA hulls were being made and they had a greater internal capacity than the new 2-piece AA hulls. The wads were intended to fit the old hulls. You need a shorter hull like Downrange's DRA-12 or their XL-1. I talked with Kevin at DRMfg recently and he noted that most wads produced now use the same size shot cup for both 1 oz and 1 1/8 oz loads and, no, not all the shot fits in the cup but it doesn't seem to matter.
Jeff,
When I put them side by side the 1 oz is actually about 1/8" taller. I'll take a picture and post. Ken, I'll adjust my reloader like yours although it sounds like it is pretty similar.
"So I have reduced the shot load between 7/8 and 1 ounce. Has anyone else seen this with claybusters? The 1 1/8 ounce wads work fine."
You have your answer. Load em light (for practice or whatever) until they or the AA's or gone. If you're going to stick with AAHS's and want exactly 1 ounce you need a different wad.....increased wad pressure is never the best answer. A good recipe is one with the perfect stack height with zero wad pressure.
I have before me a new unopened bag of Winchester AA gray wads # WAA12L. It states on the bag "NOTICE: These gray Winchester AA 12 gauge wads have been designed specifically for 7/8 oz. (24gram) target loads: they can also be used in 1oz. loads. Check your powder manufacturer for correct loading data." Yes I have had this problem before. Winchester told me to use the AA12F1 wad which is made for the AA case with 1 oz. loads and the problem will go away. Answer: you are trying to put 1 oz. shot in a 7/8 oz. wad. Bill Hom
Ahh, that's what I thought. It didn't make sense to me that the shot was over the top of the wad. I'll just load them lighter with 7/8" for practice if I miss it's no big deal. Plus more practice shells for less cost.
I use the same 1 oz wad your using only I never use the new AA hulls. I only use gun club and STS and set my wad pressure very light so it barely moves when I seat the wad and am having no problem. The reloads look great. I can't remember now but I DID have problems with the new AA hulls before I switched to the gun club and STS hulls. Hope this helps. Tom
I had the same issue with cb wads in a aa hull. I too finished them off in sts hulls and use either dra12 or xl1 wads in the aa hull for 1oz and they work flawlessly.
THe claybusters are WAA12SL clones. I loaded a 100 with 7/8th and they came out fine. I'll just practice with them. Thanks for everyones response.
