Got back from the Grand late Tues. evening after a much to short two days.

My Son went with me and could only get a few days off.

After all the bickering from my fellow Ohio shooters about Sparta I had to see it for myself.

Results...I like it , like it a lot.

Great location, rural, yes, but ideal for such an immense facility.

Sparta...A nice small town with the some of the most friendly people I have ever met.

My wife was able to get a room at the Holiday Inn Express which was first class.

A little more pricey than what I would have got, but at such a late date I guess I was lucky.

Found some great restaurants with good food and very reasonable prices.

Unfriendly bunch of Gun Grabbing Liberals....another phrase I have heard.

I didn't find any in Southern Ill. Pretty conservative if you ask me.

Don't mention Springfield or Chicago politics unless your ready for an earful.

Facility run very efficient and golf carts had a path to go instead of near misses. One complaint...Squadding line were very long and super slow.

Parking was no problem.

Talked to a local Farmers that said he comes every year to enjoy the food and the people, imagine that,..... the people, he said.

So, My fellow Ohio shooters will probably call me Benedict Arnold buts that's OK. I tried it and I like it. Next year longer, Lord willing.

Regards....Gerald

Been to both, only about 25 or 30 miles difference for me. Each have (had) their own unique personalities. Maybe a slight preference for Sparta, only because it's newer--bigger--can drive right up to your bank--more camping space, things like that do make it easier for us in the senior vet category. Yes I do miss the nice BIG shade trees, and they did have people movers at Vandalia (sp). So for me it's still GRAND. Still meet the finest people at trapshoots. Ross Puls

Gerald--I'm glad you gave it a chance and most of all liked it. Thank you for your commments and compliments of the residents of Sparta. I hope you are able to make it back next year and many more years to come. As a resident of Sparta, we don't have anything against the people of Ohio. We just want everyone to have a good time at the Grand and then make it home safely again.

Cheers to you for giving us and the WSRC a chance.

Sincerly,

Matt

It was a pleasure meeting you and the guys today. Hope you shot well. (I didn't). I love it here and couldn't imgine any better location to have the Grand American. Being a Midwesterner myself, I know how friendly locals are. And I also include those in Ohio and the great Cardinal Center. I encourage every trap shooter to come here at least once in their life. Shoot well.

My dad, 2 buddies and I shot the Grand for the first time this year: the shoot was well run we thought other than the squadding lines being pretty slow. The trap help we encountered were well trained and good to work w/, the scores we shot were our own fault LOL, and the facility is amazing! We'll be back next year for sure. I think I am going through peach ice cream withdrawl though.... Had a GREAT dinner at Tonys in Masquotah? (sp) as well. J. Terre

Define Naysayers Please ...

Just because another persons opinion is not the same as other people does not make them a Naysayer ... Everyone is entitled to their opinion like it or not thats just the way it is, so get used to it ... It takes as many years or more to build something back up as it took to run it down, thats not a negative comment thats the facts based on opinion and experience which has already been covered ... Some people like to say something, anything even when they say nothing worth while and refer to others as Naysayers ... Its a good thing that the shoot is going well, but in reality there is a lot of room for improvement when compared to years gone by ... If you want to make a call at least make the call for what it really is ... If Mr and Mrs Bill Martin had not opened their check book and their Hearts and donated a bunch of money in a attempt to turn the thing around imagine what it would be like based on the diretion it was headed in before their Generous donations ... I call them as I see them and could care less who likes it or not, comments from certain people are meaningless but the people who make them know that or they should ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

William,

As gently as possible, you are one of the naysayers. I have not read one good word you have had to say about Illinois in general, and Sparta in specific, in several years.

I wish you would give it a chance; you might even have fun.

I did, and I did, and it was worth every penny in gas and other expenses that I spent to do so, and it's somewhat further for me, being in Los Angeles, than it is for my friend, the Arizona connection.

I'm not looking to stir up trouble here, William, I'm asking you to give it a chance....what say you?

You know, being from Illinois, (if I remember right) that SOUTHERN Ill. folks are NOTHING like the clowns from Cook County, and that they are the nicest people I have ever met.....so? why not?

It's nice to see that some shooters before they comment actually go to Sparta and see for themselves. Unlike a few who sit on their butts, and complain and bitch and have never been there, but still know everything about it. Just a bunch of blow holes with nothing more to do.

John,

I sincerely appreciate what you are saying and have not seen anything that would change my way of thinking which was formed about the Grand being relocated to Sparta, Illinois prior to the WSRC being built ... I do not care for being manipulated and the entire membership was fed a bunch of BS while it was happening, it ended up there was no choice left and that usually implys desparation or trouble in one way or another ... I made the choice to not attend and support the Grand based on much more than its location ... The attendance was falling off prior to Extremely Generous Dontions made by the Martins to try and revive the ship that was sinking fast (look at the attendance records) and it appears that it has helped to the greater degree ... I call them like I see them if thats being a Naysayer so be it ... I have very definate opinions about a lot of things and they are not always good but seldom negative either ... The WSRC, ATA, or even Sparta itself are not the draw to bring people to Sparta, the promotion of it by a Benefactor is ... I lived and made up my mind that I would not die in Illinois, that was also my choice which is why I relocated to the Phoenix area ... I have been to Sparta (3 X's) and think its a neat little town but not the place for what once was the Biggest Trapshooting Championship shoot in the world only because of the lack of accomidations which turns some people away ... If I ever show up there it won't be with a gun, but just to drop in and see some friends ... I hope you shoot well and you have a great time ... Hell, I even made a friend in Sparta who frequents this site often, more like lives on and for it ... lol ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

amazing to me the people who think Vandalia started as it ended. It took quite awhile before there were motels close by, you don't think people slept in tents, or rented rooms from homeowners cause they couldn't afford a motel do you. And it doesn't matter whether you like it or not, the GRAND is in Sparta, and it is GRAND!!

Per you B/S commentary above: Take Note: To argue over the Internet is like running in the Special Olympics, even if you win you’re still retarded.

Are you serious...how could you make a statement like this and still call yourself a humanbeing?

I think you have done a wonderful job exposing yourself for what you really are.

To see the look on the kids & parents faces when they are competing is priceless. Of course to a person who has the type of class that your last post displayed, you probably should attend a dog fight.

Have a 10 yr camp lease @ Sparta and had the opportunity to stay for the whole thing this year and LOVED IT! The camp ground at Vandalia was so congested that it was just one small fire away from being a huge disaster. There were some great things about Vandalia that will never be recreated. But Sparta is the best thing for the future of trap shootings biggest shoot. Plenty of room to grow here. Nay say all you want, the rest of us won't miss you while we're having the time of our life. May be some news coming out shortly about the ATA buying the Sparta complex. It's still in the talking stages is the word we're hearing but would love to see it happen.

Looking forward to tomorrows GAH.

I do not know you or your daughter, have never met your daughter, and probably never will meet your daughter so in closing I would not speak of or about your daughter in anyway that would or should upset or alarm you and or her ... May God Bless her and watch over her ...

I also happen to put a lot of time in working with a group called the Handi-capables in this immediate area, these people are mentally challenged and some are grossly physically challenged to mildly Physically challenged ... I said something that was not intended to offend anyone in anyway, shape, or form but probably a bad example of something and in bad taste ... DONE, OVER let it go ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

WPT......Thanks for your time in helping the less fortunate. It takes someone with character to donate their time for causes like that.

I knew WPT would be the first one on here with a negative opinion as he always is. I think he is just a loney person with nothing else to do but complain about Sparta. I think he would be a happier person if he would get over about the Grand moving to Sparta. Thousands of happy People and one loney naysayer

Gee guys, I didn't think this thread would get so hostile.

Seems like we always get into a pissing ( yes I said it ) match.

WPT..I took it as a poor choice of wording. I know what you meant.

Romie..I wouldn't call Vandalia's facilities a dump, just old and adequate for as much as they were used.

Were talking about a facility at least 1/3 to 1/4 the size. Needed major work I'll admit but served well for it's time. Lets move on.

Regards....Gerald

I left Mt on Monday at 6 am and got to Sparta on Tuesday at 5 pm. Shot the 200 Singles on Wed and the 100 in the C of C event and got back in the car and was in Grand Island NE before quiting for the day. At noon today I was back in Mt.

I had a wonderful time, shot like crap, but wouldn't change a thing. I lucked out on the weather, never had to suffer the heat, and had some of that peach icecream so many talked about. ( I have the punch card just in case I ever get the urge to drive that far for three hours of shooting)

It's a nice place, but with a facility that large there are people you will never see, even if you stay the entire two weeks. Just the nature of the beast.

Sparta is the Grand for now and it will be that way for quite a few more years. Everyone should try and shoot it once...just to say you did.

Rick in MT

This was my first trip to the Grand and I had a fantastic time. I loved going to Vandalia with my parents growing up, but I have to say this facility rocks. I enjoyed the fact that I could park in front of my bank and walk up to shoot. I enjoyed finding a parking spot wherever I wanted to go. The buildings and grounds were clean & inviting. I see why there were so many top-notch scores, the background is great!

Jerry & I drove 14 hours for me to shoot 100 targets (COC)(99/100)and I am so glad that we did. We took advantage of the location and traveled on to St. Louis and toured the Arch and saw the Mississippi River. We then stopped at the Cardinal Center as neither of us have ever been there. This facility rocks, too.

Thanks for a great adventure to the sport we all love no matter where we have to pull the trigger.

Jo Ann Lewis, NYS

I have been to Sparta every year since the facility opened. My take is

1. Butcher's Block- great food , fair prices. Hard working people trying to make a living.

2. Did not eat enough vanilla ice cream. I promise to do better in the future.

3. Thanks to Phillip C., nice fellow, great gunsmith.

4. South Side Ribs, thanks for raising my cholesterol.

5. Stu Wright, nice guy, great gunsmith.

6. Illinois State Police, nice job helping with traffic when needed (did you ever see that in Vandalia?).

7. Too bad they throw left angles from post one or I might be in shootoffs someday.

8. To all the vendors, thanks for making the Grand . I find it hard to beleive that a trap vendor could find another place with as many trapshooters as Sparta. I hope more vendors decided to come next year.

9. Loved shooting the Sporting Clays Course. Maybe Jordan will let me win next year??

10. Thanks to the ATA, IDNR,Ill. State Police, line help, people of Sparta and surrounding communities for making this a most enjoyable experience. I have had a blast every year in Sparta and I hope to return next year.

11. I am thankful we have Sparta to host the Grand American.

The Grand was GREAT! I haven't been back since 2007, but not because of the Grand NOT being held in Ohio. This year was special and it was good to see so many old friends. We would still be regulars if Roger was still shooting....it is the Grand...it is as simple as that. Yes, the facility is huge, but if you spend some time at the Event Center...(or South Side Ribs), you will eventually see just about everyone.

My friend and I rented a house in Steeleville, just south of Sparta. We ate breakfast at a place called Grannies. There were several local people that sat at a large table in the middle of the place. The first day they invited the three of us to sit at their table with them. We declined but in coming days had great conversations about everything from shooting to politics. Everyone of them said hi and good-bye everyday.

Next door was where we stopped for a night cap. A place called the Firehouse. It is a resturant and bar. We were treated like family. When we walked in the owner remembered us from last year. We are from Wisconsin and took some ribbing about the Brewer-St. Louis baseball series (which Milw swept) but I have never met so many wonderful and friendly people in my life. We even got names and business cards from people that said if we couldn't find a place to stay next year we could call them. They thanked us for coming to see their area of the state. One thing for sure. That never happened in Vandalia or surounding area. I have been to 42 state and the people here as nice as you can find anywhere.

WPT .... Anyone who claims to work with disabled people, get a "good feeling" inside, pat themselves on the back and then openly ridicule these same people does not deserve the fantastic opportunity to work with them. No matter how hard you try, you cannot get away from your ignorance.

I never patted myself on the back for anything, nor do I ridicule the people volunteer to work and assist with, your complete ignorance from lack of experience is what is apparent ... Being as you do not know me you might want to look in the mirror and see what is lacking before you profess to be able to in others ... I admittedly said something that should not of been said, (but has been said by many others from time to time) take its for whats it worth ... What anyone thinks about it or me means nothing to me so keep it to yourself ... I seriously doubt that I am the first person to say something that was in bad taste, so chew on it and spit it out, you'll feel better then go get over it ... WPT ... (YAC) ...NOT ....
