ive got 2 new kids in my yard.

These guys got blown from their owl box on a windy night last week, and are surviving nicely. They have just begun to fly some short distances. Their wing feathers are developing nicely but thier body is still mostly down and pin feathers. I hope you enjoy the pic. Their mom and dad will swoop down and feed them on the ground, and will let us get within about 10 feet from them.

Bob

That is pretty neat! I bet the parents could make you stay back. Those are big birds as adults. Jeff

The parents are outside the house every morning about 5 am. If I ever get a chance to photo them in the daytime with enuff light, I'll post it. In the daytime they are pretty secretive

Last year I was goofing around and was hooting back at some owls and one of them swooped down and almost landed on me, and yes I had to go in and change my underwear. LOL They are quite large with an almost five foot wing span. I still do it but stay on the porch. I have several large oak trees next to my house and they always show up in the mating season. When I was stationed at Sunnyvale AFS in the 80's there were owls close to the flight line that lives in the ground. It was so neat to see the parents bring them out to stretch their wings in readiness to fly. I got to see four families raised while I was there. Jackie B.

Nice.

Reminds me of when I was a kid in Omaha. A Great Horned Owl used to sit on a Crab Apple branch just outside my window one summer.

My son Sean and I often see a Great Horned Owl at our first stand when we go to eastern Oregon for varmint and coyote hunting. He'll swoop down on us to see what we're up to.

We can hear the owls at my mother-in-law's ranch near Sandy, Oregon, but have yet to see one. From the sounds and direction there are at least five different individuals, of at least two species.

A little Pigmy owl hit the window once. He was stunned & I went out & picked him up. I could wrap my whole hand around him. About the size of a sparrow. He was really alert, curious & not nervous at all, exhibited no fear. Took him inside & showed the wife. Put him on the bird feeder(poor birds.) He hung around for 3 days & showed no ill effects. It was really wild the way the head swiveled around back & forth, almost 360 degrees.

We have a brood of three Great Horned owls in our neighborhood this year as well. Really cool birds and their parents do a good job of keeping the rodent and quail population in check. Downside is the when they make a bombing run over your freshly washed truck .....

Good photo!
