Went to Buffalo Wild Wings tonight--- Shittiest experience I had in a long time. This took place at the Ferndale, Michigan location. All I wanted was to watch the Stanley Cup Hockey Game and have some garlic wings. Below is the letter I wrote them on their web site;

Tonight I walked into this restuarant and for the first time since I have been going there I was asked for I.D. Very rudely I might add. The person asking, a female about 18-20 years old insisted that that was the store policy. The store was not crowded at all-there were lots of empty seats. So I asked where the manager was and coincedently he was walking up to the podium at the door. I said that this lady was asking for my I.D. He reaffirmed that this was the store policy. I walked out without ever being seated.

There are two things VERY WRONG with this policy. First of all I am 60 years old (old enough to be the young lady's grandfather) and don't look like I am under 21 (the legal drinking age in MIchigan) Secondly a little common sense on your part would go a long way toward customer relations. Isn't it good customer relations that drive the food industry?

Not only did I consider this whole scenario as a huge INSULT, I doubt I will return to that location again. I am not one to frequent places with bad service and insulting wait staff.

Keep in mind that yelp.com is a very powerful tool for the general public and I am frequently on the web site. Personally I couldn't reccomend Buffalo Wild Wings to anyone, knowing that walking thru your door will get you insulted. Again it's that common sense thing that is bothersome.

Not sure about Michigan but in New Mexico a person must be at least 21 years old and have valid identification to be served alcohol. The requirement for anyone to have valid identification often puts businesses in a bad position.

Chuckie,

I think you over reacted. I take it as a compliment and laugh when I get carded. You are a big boy though and are certainly allowed to make your own rational and irrational decisions. I just think you shouldn't stress yourself so much on such trivial things. It ain't good for the BP. What do you do when it's really something to get upset over?

Just Say'n.....,.

Chuck- Ask around, I wonder if they recently got pinched for selling to a minor by not asking for proper ID? If so, their knee-jerk reaction is a zero-tolerance policy on customer ID. I used to card them if I thought they might be under 30 yrs old when I was a bartender more than 25 years ago. Only the men were offended when I asked for their ID if they were pushing 30.

Sounds like a compliment to me, rather than an insult but I'd rather see the glass half full instead of half empty.

Even if one doesn't like one BWW establishment, it seems a bit excessive to indict them all in any case. There are probably hundreds of them if not thousands so undoubtedly some are better than others.

chuckie, it's probably some assinine government regulation.

I was at the concession stand in Wrigley Field where a guy who was probably 90 and looked it was made to produce an ID to buy a beer.

Stupidity at it's finest. Starting a few years ago, everyone here in Indiana has to show an ID to buy beer/liquor when carrying out. Suddenly a place that I had been buying beer started to make me show an ID. The guy behind the counter - apoligized, but said it is now the law. I'm 57! Now I can go down to my local Buffalo Wild Wings and drink beer at the bar and not get carded, but if I want a 6 pack from the grocery/liquor store I have to show id. WTF is the difference????? Only government can be so stupid.

Chuckie, I don't blame you for not wanting to go back, but then again those "Spicy Garlic", "Sweet Bar b que", "Teriyaki" wings are hard to resist.

Getting carded wasn't the point. The point was the rudness and the lame excuse that it's store policy. If they got pinched for selling to a minor, they should train the help better. If they would have said something like ---we've been having problems so we card everyone, I would have accepted that. But to say it's store policy when I was there about 3 weeks ago and didn't get this treatment, that is an insult to everyone. Like I said, I couldn't pass for 21 if a makeup artist fixed me.

My guess is that Buffalo Wild Wings in Ferndale, MI will be very happy to NOT see you again.

Just judging from the attitude you show in your initial posting I can very easily get the impression that your bullying tactics failed with the young lady and then, because the company policy WAS followed, as reinforced by the manager, and you did not get your way, your are trying to transfer the blame for the incident totally to the young lady. By age 60 most people have developed a tolerance and understanding for satisfactorily dealing with people. That does not seem to be the case here.

I would be most interested in hearing the viewpoint of the young lady as to how SHE was treated by you. Were you respectful of her and her attempts to comply with the company policy? Would SHE ever even consider working for you as your employee? How would you handle it if YOU had to accept HER as being YOUR supervisor in some job? Would YOU unilaterally decide that the instructions your supervisor gave you were to be ignored and your actions possibly even be in violation of applicable laws, simply because YOU decided they did not apply to you?

The problem is that too many people lack discretionary ability. Let an employee lacking that ability decide who to card and problems ensue. I'm 61 and all hell would break loose if they carded a 70 year old and not me:)

Needless to say we had quite a few laughs, except for the A**h*le who also owned several pizza joints in the town. The server was just doing what she was instructed tip her well the next time.

I think it may be the result of a potential legal issue. Here in Las Vegas there are several establishments that sell alchohol that will always ask everyone for their ID, mo matter how young or old you look. It could stem from a possible legal issue similar to "profiling" if they only ask a person who looks under 21 for their ID. By asking everyone they avoid the issue of age discrimination. It is a little irratating to be asked for my ID when I certainly look well over 21, but it's the times we live in these days.

gusto777 hit it spot on....a business does not want to be accused of "profiling" so they make a "blanket" policy of carding everyone to avoid such issues...it also avoids the issue of interpreting someone's age, especially for those customers in the under 30 crowd. I think the blanket policy of carding everyone is more geared towards the under 30 crowd. But to make it more "politically correct", they want to card everyone and to also make it easier for the bartenders or host/hostess.

Since the statute of limitations has long expired (along with the bar owner I reference below) I can tell you when I got carded years ago.

It was in Chicago and I was stationed Chanute AFB which is about 120 miles south of Chi town, I had a number or relatives including a cousin who played in a polka band. He was exactly the same age as me. That was 19 years old. 21 was the legal age for alcohol.

There was one favorite bar that we had been going to for maybe a year. The bar man knew us and never had a problem. One time however he asked us for ID. I said "we have been coming here for a year and you never asked. Today you do!" He whispered the guy at the end of the bar is a liquor cop ( or what ever the title was) so just show me something. I pulled out my AF dining hall card, which incidentally does not have any age info on it, showed it to him and he said thanks. My cousin showed him something or another and we were good for the night. I seem to recall that the barman may even have thrown in a courtesy drink sometime during the night. We both just had to play the silly game for the Liquor board.

Years go, when I was young and foolish, I drank in the pub of a local hotel on a more than regular basis. I knew the day and night staff very well, and messed around with a couple of the waitresses on occasion. After a month at sea, I went in on my first night ashore, and joined my friends around the pool table. A new, VERY attractive waitress came by, so I ordered a round of beer for the table. She looked at me, and in a snooty tone, said "I want to see some ID from you first." I looked at her, stunned. I said "WHAT?" she said "You heard me! I want to see some ID!" My buddies were chuckling, as I was about 6 months short of legal. I couldn't help it, and started to laugh as well. We were roaring so much that the bar manager looked up at us and asked what was so funny? I yelled back that the new girl asked ME for ID. That got the bartenders and other waitresses, laughing as well. Most of the customers were locals, and knew me as a regular, so THEY started to laugh! The waitress stomped off, and never, in her few months in that bar, did she come back up to the section where the pool tables were. The waitress I was messing around with then traded sections with her that night, and did very well on tips.

Amazing how many posters here are sticking up for senseless Govt. regulations and zero tolerance policies. Yet these are the same people who have a howling $h!+ fit about UPS Stores refusal to ship fire-arms. Hypocrasy and apathy are what brought us to the overall condition that our society resides in nowdays. And this incident is a micro-cosm of the whole mess. I also usually pass when it comes to spending my money to support the brainless and intolerant(except for taxes, cuzitz the law). I'm refering to whomever 'ordered the help' to card senior citizens.

I would say thank you kid for the compliment smile and look at the old woman that is with me (that would the wife of 45 years)and wonder what I am doing with this senior citizen? Quietly take my heart medication and 24 other pills that day plus two insulin injections and get on with my life, buffalo wings, and the hockey game on TV.

You really take life too seriously, and if you were her you would do the same or find a new job (you do remember a job right?) that thing you used to have before BamBam hit the White House. It was not her rules but her employer's rule.

Lighten up and smile and enjoy life while you still can. You are hurting no one but you, think about it.

DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL THINGS IN LIFE. There are enough bigger problems that do matter to get your blood pressure up.

Rock

Jim

i was told once that by state law in Michigan everyone under the age of 36 years old must be carded. In Michigan being carded at 60 is not as big a compliment as you might think.

Speaking of getting one's blood pressure up...

I quit going to BWW after a couple of times. It had nothing to do with rude employees, house rules, government intrusion, lack of discretionary carding, etc.

Here's the deal. Whether wings or any of their other menu items, there's enough sodium content that you might as well swallow a salt shaker. Eat an order of wings and you can actually listen while three of your favorite arteries get hard.

You guys argue the merits of carding or not. I just want to avoid a heart attack long enough to finish the next registered shoot.

Actually the one thing that is amazing is they way they have taken a product that used to end up getting pitched and turned it into a highly profitable product

I remember when I was in the Air Force, my buddies wife used to work at Kentucky Fried Chicken, and we would always wait for her to come home because she would bring a bucket full of wings, because nobody wanted to pay them, also ever Sunday in the NCO club they would bring out free chicken wings a the bars, because nobody wanted to pay for them

But we sure scarfed them up when they were free

Just an observation, carry on

Funny story to go with this -- many many years ago in South River NJ , we all use to get together at Smackers Bar after our baseball, football games or any other time . This was when the legal drinking age was 18 . One day we celebrated Chippys birthday and the owner asked how old and he said I`m now 18 and can drink legally . Well she almost shit since he had been drinking with us since he was 15 but looked older than me and I was just out of the Navy at 21.

We no longer have any common sense in this country.

A couple of years ago I'm in line to check out at Walgreen's and a young girl behind the counter asked a man who looked to be in his late 80's for his ID because he wanted to purchase some cigars.

The customer was in a wheelchair, and very hard of hearing. Every time she asked to see his ID, he said what, I can't here you? The customers in line started yelling at her. The girl said they would fire her if she did not get to see his ID.

Same thing happened at a local big chain grocery store when an elderly man attempted to purchase a bottle of wine. The gal behind the counter said a customer could be 100 years old and without showing the ID, they won't sell it to a customer or they will get fired.

I am in my 60's, look more like 80, and one day my wife and I went to a grocery store called Sam's club. I wanted to pick up some diapers for my grandkids and I asked a pimple faced checker if she could tell me where the diapers were located?

She points to the far end of the store and said, are these diapers for you? I was shocked and said NO! They are for my grandkids. She then pointed to the opposite direction and said those diapers for children are over there.

I could here my wife laughing through out the store. I told my wife that she thought the woman's comments were funny because she didn't say it to her. Steve Balistreri

Dont come to Kentucky, it's the law here that they are supposed to card you. I can't seem to get why you would be upset anyway. Just doing their job.
