So I successfully arrived at the Cardinal Center Facility around 3:30 EST--just off of exit 140 on I71 in Marango, Ohio. This place is amazing--the shear scope is really staggering... and so gorgeous. I picked up our golf cart and have been driving around snapping some pics of the 200 bird doubles event going on this afternoon.

I'll be blogging the entire shoot in this thread, as well as following Dave Shaeffer's continued run into the record books. Dave is arriving around 7pm, right about the time I'll be covering the shoot offs.

I'll be meeting with Bob Stuart and the tournament director to go over how best to do my job here... I'll be posting our squad numbers for each event this evening. Since shooting Thursday was a last minute decision, I'll post those squad numbers as soon as we pull them in the morning.

For now, I hope you enjoy these pics I snapped real quick while driving up and down the line. I'll post names where I know them. If anyone wants to chime in and identify the shooters I don't name, please do so.

All the best,

Walker

Good morning! Dave and I were up bright and early at 6am--and he treated me to the Maryland version of the "shooter's breakfast". I healthy serving of bacon, eggs and real butter served on toasted wheat bread. It was delicious and I'm full.

We arrived at classification and squadding bright and early at 8am--to long lines and some incredibly friendly folks. The Cardinal Center is a class A organization.

I snapped some photos and put together Dave's squad list.

Dave will be continuing the streak in Thursday's event 5. Here is his squad list for today.

Event 4--100 handicap targets. Bank 10, Squad 30, Post 2

Event 5--100 singles targets. Bank 1, Squad 41, Post 2

Event 6--100 handicap targets. Bank 6, Squad 6, Post 1

Here are the photos I snapped this AM... I'll be updating throughout the day.

All the best,

Walker

Banks 1-4, I'm standing on the International Trap pad at about 7am this morning.

One of the big differences between the Cardinal Center and other facilities on the East Coast is that they don't have a shell house--so they allow vendors to sell shells on the premises... great prices too!

In line, waiting for classification and squadding to open up.

Shaeffer broke a 96 in caps this morning. I'm sitting under the pavilion soaking in the atmosphere and waiting for the singles event to begin. I think they're going to announce what squad and bank Dave is shooting on so that spectators can come down and witness history. I'm shooting on station 1 and Dave on 2--I'm more nervous than he is... I hope I run them just so I don't give myself a heart attack worrying about being a distraction in front of him--but to be completely honest, it really doesn't seem like anything distracts him. He's been inundated with well wishes, extended hands and long stares and points--it appears that everyone knows what he's accomplished and that his streak is still alive.

In any event, history continues in another hour or so... Shaeffer is a machine, pure and simple. I've never met anyone like him. He likes to joke that he's dumber than a box of shit, but I assure everyone--he's Einstein when it comes to shooting Trap. I had absolutely no idea how much he thinks about before he goes out to the line--the analysis, the wind gauging, etc.

I'll post after the singles... and I'll have pics of Dave to go along with it--for now, here are some photos I snapped during the first handicap event this morning.

All the best,

Walker

So we went out to the line for the singles event, me and 1, Shaeffer on 2, John F. on 4, and two gentlemen whose names escape me right now. The wind was whipping, gusting up to 25 MPH... Shaeffer just plugging away--inkdots... 1,2,3,4 and then a quarter left, the wind shot it straight up in the air just as he touched it off... "Loss", says the scorekeeper. And with that small intervention by mother-nature, the streak is over. Dave Shaeffer Jr's ATA and World Record for longest streak of singles program targets broken, without a miss, ends at an unofficial 2196 targets. Once Trap and Field confirms the exact target he missed at the State Shoot in Pennsylvania, his official record will be announced and posted.

The good news in all of this is that David received an outpouring of well wishes and congratulations--for shattering Earl Scripture's long run record, winning the Clay Target Championship during the run, and for conducting himself like the unbelievable professional that he is. The guy is pure talent and he is a pleasure to watch.

His new streak is at 90 targets without a loss.

He's still sitting at the third highest singles average in ATA history--99.78% on 5000 targets.

I'm off to the shooter appreciation chicken bbq, but before I go, here are some more photos I snapped during the singles and second handicap event this afternoon. They're drawing the numbers for the Ithaca Gun shoot off here in just a couple of minutes.

All the best,

Walker

Walker, it is a shame Dave even shot under the conditions and risked his long run on such poor targets. Of course hindsight is always wiser. Dave may not be a gambler, but he looks like a man's man who would not back down even in the most adverse of conditions. My hat is off to him for his accomplishment and I wish him well in his next endeavor, which will more than likely be another long singles run! Biff

Yeah I think it was great that Dave went ahead and shot the windy singles ok I wasn't there but I have know a few great shooter's in the past that wouldn't shoot targets when the weather was bad guess that is what you call target managment so you will make the state team or the all american team at the end of the year.

Anyway Dave could had decided to wait until the next 16 event if he wanted to and I would had supported it since he was on a once in a life time run and I bet others would have agreed.

But since Dave went ahead and shot the not so good targets then all I have to say is I think that more of him for doing it and of course im sure he had some wild ones in the streak that he broke before anyway he is the long run champ right now and as Walker said he is 90 straight and counting on another long run.

I do apologize for not updating until now--but today has been a busy day of writing, interviews and shooting.

I had the pleasure of shooting the singles event with Shaeffer and Kay Ohye... Kay, Dave and myself were the only three on our squad to run the first trap--a total highlight for me. They both ran the 100, and I shot a score that hit the lewis and got me my money back. :)

There was a lone 100 in the handicap this afternoon--one that would have paid around 4000 bucks to the winner, had he played the card. Shaeffer and Kay both broke 98, along with 6 others. We're on the line right now, watching the Ithaca Gun shoot off, waiting for the handicap shoot offs to begin.

In the doubles, Kay Ohye broke the only 100 in the doubles... and I enjoyed watching him powder every single one of the them--298x300 today for the ATA Hall of Famer... he said afterward, "not bad for the old dog."

I hope you enjoy the photos...

All the best,

Walker

I did not drop off the face of the earth... Shoot offs were late lastnight and I had a full day of photos and shooting today--and a 7 hr drive home to boot. Steve Huber won the singles title lastnight after 150 extra targets--congrats to Steve.

There are three big stories out of the Cardinal. First, attendance was up 25% from last year--1200+shooters total... which makes the Cardinal the 3rd or 4th biggest shoot in the country outside of the Grand (and is likely to be a 7 for AA points next year), the folks at the Cardinal Center really know how to build a shooter friendly, world class facility (and they put on an awesome shoot), and the money at the Cardinal was insane. Over 10k handed out to the top scores in the three handicap events--and that's without a calcutta.

I'll leave you tonight with two photos--one I took yesterday between hundreds, when Mr. Fishburn cajoled all of the shooters to join a group photo that he had set up... the second is an aerial shot I took of banks 5-10 this morning. I'll post tomorrow with a full re-cap and additional pics.

All the best,

Walker

Certainly the story of the week was that David Shaeffer Jr's singles program run ended on Thursday at 2194 (unofficial) targets. I would have to say that the most frequent comment I heard was, "I can't believe he would jeopardize his streak shooting in those conditions." Ironically, Dave said that he shot in worse conditions during the streak (I can't imagine worse than 30mph wind gusts) and that he's never picked and choosed when to shoot and he wasn't going to now. He commented to me how proud he was when he received a standing "O" from the 1000 or so shooters who participated in the group photo on Saturday. David, my hat is off to you, my friend... you're the best singles shooter in the country and I'm thankful for the opportunity to spend the week shooting and hanging out with you.

Collin Bigras, All American from Vermont, cleaned up in the Junior ranks, snatching up 7 trophies--including the Singles title and HOA and HAA.

Dave Shaeffer Jr. finished runner up in Friday's handicap after a 98 and two rounds of shoot off and he took home the the AA HOA Honors.

Steve Huber won the Singles Championship after a perfect double century and 6 extra rounds of shoot off... The former All-American and Pennsylvania Trapshooter of the Year has completed his comeback from cancer and I couldn't possibly be happier for him. Well done, Steve.

Tank Lunsford finished runner up in the Handicap Championship with the lone 98 and secured the HOA Championship with his efforts.

Kevin Parrott, likely a sandbagger, from Kentucky (I'm joking, folks) took home the doubles championship with 50 dead pairs.

Honorable mention goes out to Kay Ohye, who went 498x500 on Friday and Saturday and to Ian Recla--a sub-junior from PA, who was shooting in the 60's, 70's and 80's just two months ago at the PA State Shoot... this week he broke 99 and a pair of 98's in singles and he snatched up the SJ Runner Up trophy in the HOA--well done, little man.

And, of course, to my good friend--Sub Junior, All American from NY, Christopher Vendel--who took home SJ Runner Up in the HAA. Great Shooting Christopher.

I would like to extend a warm thank-you to the Jack Fishburn, Aden Kauffman and their amazing staff at the Cardinal Center. What an incredible week.

I'll leave you with a couple more photos and a thank you to all of those who have commented. If you enjoy my coverage, and you'd like to see more, I will have three articles in the October issue of Trapshooting USA magazine. Subscription info is at the above link.

Thank you all again and all the best,

Walker

Walker, thanks again so much for the outstanding photos. The Cardinal Center is beautiful and I see why it receives all of the great "raves" and comments. I, along with the rest of the group, am sorry David's streak endedd, but, now he gets to start all over. A new goal!

That was indeed Arizona's Kristi Williams in the photo and she has been shooting the Kriegoff for I would say at least a year now. I believe Gerry has/had one too but may have gone back to the Seitz?..you know how shooters are!

Walker, will you be attending any of the Sat Grand's in AZ?

Speaking of middle sections Walker...

I've never seen a finer collection of remarkable middle sections in my whole entire miserable life.

Append the three shots together in a panoramic shot in proper perspective, and I believe we've got a chance for at least an honorable mention in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Don't forget yer roots my upwardly mobile friend... you still have neighbors in the low rent section.

Guy B.

Guy... you're the best...

...I must admit, when I was booking my flight/hotel and rental car for the Missouri Fall Handicap this evening, I thought to myself, "this is way better than sleeping in the back of my wagon!"

Thank goodness Trapshooting USA has asked me to cover this shoot as well. I will be traveling with none other than Maryland's very own Dave Shaeffer Jr--Mr. Clay Target Champion himself.

All the best, neighbor.

Walker

Alright, So the official tally for Dave Shaeffer's record? He dropped the 38th bird during the Pennsylvania State Shoot on June 20th--beginning the streak (this is official, Trap and Field came back with the research today). His streak ended on August 20th at the Cardinal Classic--where he dropped the 5th bird out of the trap. That means that Dave ran 2166 straight targets--one less than Earl Scripture's original record of 2167. David mistakingly recalled dropping his target on the first trap at PA and not the second.

The most interesting caveat to all of this? Earl Scripture's "record" doesn't officially stand as of 1998 and then again as of 2001 (when the ATA denied his application for re-instatement). That makes Dave Shaeffer Jr. the current world record holder of the longest singles program run in ATA history at 2166.

This really reminds of me of 1988, when Ben Johnson broke the world record in the 100 meter dash--9.79--only to have it stripped a few days later for testing positive for steroids. Carl Lewis' 9.83 became the new world record.

In either event... 2166 is the new standard... and an absolutely ridiculous one at that--what a run.

All the best,

Walker

Holy crap, that is like having 21 one hundred straights, in a row! Mind boggling!

Hi Walker. You've been doing a superb job with the reports and pictures. I'll look forward to your article(s) In Trapshooting USA.

One question. I'm well aware of the Earl Scripture story with the possible fabrication of some of his shooting exploits.

When he did do his run were all of those targets witnessed? If they were legitimate targets then he holds the now unofficial streak since Dave missed by one.

I am in no way lessening the magnitude of Dave's accomplishment since it is way past amazing. I can't even breathe that many times in a row correctly. Just curious how being banned by the ATA makes Earls streak unofficial. I guess I'm questioning the semantics.

Sort of like Pete Rose being banned from the Hall of Fame since he was thrown out of organized baseball for gambling.

Regards,

Jerry

That is possibly the most mindblowing of coincidences...that he missed the bird that would have tied him for the record...but it still stands...

Walker, so are you saying that Earls record has been recended because of his situation with the ATA. In both the years you state above I remember our discussion of doing just that but never remember it being voted in to remove the record. Please verify.

Ken "so and so", I can't remember his name--the guy from the Hall of Fame--he is the person to ask.

The discussion at the Grand (while Dave was still straight), and this was from Ken, was that Dave wasn't chasing Scripture's record at all--the record on the HOF website was wrong, the site hadn't been updated since 2005, the new site will reflect the actual record... and all of this was related to Scripture's ban for falsifying scores.

I don't know if all of Earl's targets during his string were witnessed. I'd love to speak with him and ask a few questions-- Heck, I don't even know if he's still alive. If someone has his contact info... email me at the above address and let me know, please.

Either way, whether Dave's 2166 is the new record or if he truly fell one shy of the mark, the sub-plots to this story are really profound. The run during the Grand, the CTC, the Nitro 27 win, the fact that he shot in all weather on all occasions... I mean... its profound.

Thanks for the input and all the best,

Walker
