i was not there but my father and grandfather was both there. very pround of them and all of you. god bless the USA and our armed forces. we are free because of all of you. and for that i thank you all. and we need to let you no this everyday.
Yes,USS Coral Sea CVA-43. Our Squadron Pilots were the Brave Ones. My biggest battle was,the PROTESTERS,when we got back to the STATES. Our own people, figure that. But with people like Jane Fonda,oh well, gotta let it go......Aint I Proud..............GOOD LUCK
Enlisted, not drafted, in Infantry in 1966 and discharged in 1969. Went through basic at Ft. Benning with Ranger cadre, which was the most difficult thing I ever did in my life. Became a drill sergeant at Ft. Knox. Knox basic was much easier than Benning.
I was not deployed to Viet Nam. Why, I don't know. Became transportation officer in 1967 and worked training Viet Nam Air Force types in logistics at Ft. Eustis, VA in 1968-1969. Was asked to re-enlist and offered promotion if I would serve a tour in Viet Nam in 1969. By then, I had come to my senses and left the Army.
Served three years in a reserve unit, 1969 - 1972, to help pay for college. Served as a company commander and a public information officer.
I used to feel that I was cheated and should have been deployed to Viet Nam. That was my original (and foolish) goal. I now believe that God was watching over me. I lost many friends in that war.
Today, I would caution against going to war too fast, without a good strategy or an exit plan. I am not saying don't go to war but wars are much easier to start than to finish. Remember the men and women on the ground, and their families, who are paying a heavy price.

He who does not swell with pride at the sight of an American Serviceman (or woman)in uniform or who is not humbled by their deeds, commitments and acts of selflessness is not an American!
Those who are not in awe of the power and intent of an American war machine uncloaked have not learned life's lessons.
I want to thank all of you that served and those that continue to serve for the freedoms that my family and I enjoy. I do know that without the sacrifices you have made our entire way of life would not be filled with the rights and privileges we have.
Thank You Mr. Snyder for the chance to express these feelings.

Enlisted Oct 1970, basic Ft Jackson,Ait Ft. Lee Va. reported to Repo Depo Ft. Lewis 1971, Kissinger gave his Peace is at hand speech, was sent to Ft. Bliss Tx for ADA training. Spent next 19 years serving where I was sent. One of the worst "Ass Chewings" I ever got was from a Sergeants Major I worked for stating I was sorry I never made it to NAM. He had medals all the way to his shoulder boards. He said I did what the Army told me to do and don't ever regret not going. Damn I still respect the ground that man walked on. Kenny B. 57th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon, 101st Airborne. 1969-1970. A Shua Valley, Hue, DMZ, Hamburger Hill, Bastogne, Berchtesgarden, Eagles Nest, Currahee, and many more. Walked point for 12 months. Made me grow up awfully fast. Owe my life to a dog named Major who got me thru it all. When they say Man's best friend, he definately was mine. Before Nam, I spent time in Fort Dix, Fort Polk, and Fort Benning. Lots of memories and lots of great friends. A big salute to the many who lost their lives there and all the others who had to take their chances then come home to all the anti war crap. Now I salute the people serving us in Iraq and Afghanistan. If people only new some of the things these poor people are going thru to make them a little safer. They definately deserve the respect and thanks of everyone in the USA. Jim

Jim (Mr. STS)call me tomorrow. I write newspaper articles on our KIAs and my next article is on our scout/tracker dogs that we wouldn't allow to return home with their handlers. My main characters are a labrador tracker named Joey and his 1st ID handler. I would love to include something about Major in my article. What crap it was that the dogs were left behind or put to sleep. I had a couple of gook dogs I wanted to bring home, but they would have died of old age in quarenteen in Hawaii. Are you going to the VN Dog Handlers Assoc. in Milwaukee this June? I'm planning on being there. I trained some of platoon leaders/SGTs who were at Hamburger Hill, in the art of map reading and calling in artillery fire. Steve Shewalter, 101st Abn '68 - '69. Phone number is 800-237-7026.

When I Found Out I Was Going To Vietnam...
Some people I don't understand Why are they cruel when I offer a hand They say I'm wrong to offer my life To keep our freedom, our way of life
They say I'm crazy and a stupid fool To offer my life for people like you But you like so many are dear to me So why can't these people let me be.
I'm not afraid to die if need be If my dying means keeping you free But don't misunderstand and think me a fool I value my life but more I value you.

I just want to thank SMSNYDER on making the thread because I see many trapshooters on here that had to make the choice on going to war to fight instead of deflecting to another country.

Bless you all for serving us.

Australian Army based at Nui Dat and then Bear Cat, attached to your 101 for ops. I made a lot of great mates in the US forces in 68/69. I just wish I had of kept in touch. We had the same problems here in Australia on our return, could never get over it.
I applied for permission to bring my shotgun into the US recently, to compete ,and I had to fill in a ATF form which was titled "Foreign Alliens". After working with you guys in SVN that title bothered me a tad so I dumped the idea.
As the man said "Ämerica at war is a sight to be seen". If the boys in Iraq are as good as what we were then pity help the towelheads.

Most of us don't talk about it, either because we lost good friends and don't want to re think it or because we were labeled crazy when we returned home & or because we did things we were not proud of. Many women and children suffered & it still haunts us. I prefer not to think about it but I lost some good friends and it is very hard not to. USMC Gunny 1st Div DaNang 67-68-69

MrSTS: I was in the Nam 69-70 with the 101st airborne. Spent 9 mts. in the boonies as a forward observer. I shivered a little seeing the names like Ashu Valley. I was on the 2nd chopper in the initial invasion of the valley. Spent a couple of mts at FB Currahee. Did the Hamburger Hill thing too. That really sucked!

awesome thread! my best friend, the man who taught me to shoot, was there from '67 to '68. i'm only 34 but i've heard him mention black virgin mtn. and op. junction city. he was 1st infantry. he doesn't tell stories about it though. once in a while he'll talk about camp life or something funny that happened in camp. never any combat stories though. me and his son are really close and graduated high school together. he's the only reason i found out his dad was awarded a silver star while in nam, and i've known the guy my whole life! thank you to all vets, i salute you.

Volunteered to go in 1967, my brother was already there as a F4 Guidance System Tech and bomb loader at the peak. Air Force policy didn't allow us both to be there so I never made it. He made it back home in good health. It was so sad to see on the news how our men were treated when they came home. I was stationed in Tampa Fl in Jan 71 and never saw a Viet Nam Vet treated with anything but the utmost respect which they richly deserved. I read the article above about the young man in Iraq and welled up with pride and moist eyes. Freedom is not free. Thank you Men for keeping America free. Sgt. Jackie Bennett, USAF RET, 1966-1989

Check out following : http://members.aol.com/lincmerc/FIGHT.HTML That's me me running into the fray with the helmet liner in my hand. Twin brother was in Nam, Combat Eng. with Americal Division. He was at Firebase Marianne, and caught outside the wire when it was hit. He spent several days lying in the bush with Charlie walking about him. Father landed with Rangers, Point Du Hoc, D-Day, transfered into 29th Division. Became C.O. A Company 115th Infantry, wounded in battle for Fort Montbarry outside of Brest France. Nephew is serving with 3rd infantry. Operation Desert Storm and 2 tours Iraqi Freedom. Older Brother walked the East German border during the height of the Cold War. Ancestor fought with Army of the Republic, Pennsylvania Volunteers. Gave serious thought to the USMC but had a family tradition to uphold. I guess you know this family stands. Bill Boston "GARY OWENS SIR"
Wow Bill, you have quite a bit of military history, especially with your father being one of the Rangers to scale up the cliffs of Pointe Du Hoc, those guys had it rough... One of the older gentlemen that likes to hang out at the club was a sniper in the marines in Vietnam. He came out of it with 2 purple hearts and a silver star, he never says much about it either, I've just heard stories he's told from other guys. I think anyone who has served in our armed forces deserves to be thanked for their service to our country, while I'm at it: Thank You.

Just a note about March 17. There is going to be a large number of Viet Nam Vets at the wall on the 17th. The protesters had better be afraid of them. If it comes to it there will be a real get-go. We have a large group from the Swifties going for sure. Rolling Thunder guys will be there also. Any and all are welcome to join in. Bogey

Spent 13 months at Korat AFB Thailand with 551st Recon Wing as an Aircraft Electrical Repairman, working on C-121 Constallations. Went TDY to U-Tapaio to get my discharge physical and can remember setting on my duffle bag on the flight line early one morning watching the B-52's and KC-135's taking off one right after another. Just made the ground shake. Awsome sight. Was at Korat Nov. 1968 to Nov. 1969.

Hey trapper03, I spent time in Tuy Hoa, and Vung Rho Bay with the 577th Engineer Battalion. Trying to maintain QL-1, and it's bridges was some interesting duty. Do you, or anybody else, remember the "truck/car washes"? Sure admired the nurses working out of the 91st Evac hospital.

jbbor, I sure did. we got to go to Ha Tien for our r&r patrols about every 2 months. they let us stay for about 3-4 days then it was back down south. I was on the 94 boat when we brought Sea Float in the Cau Lon river. I guess they changed the name after I left. Nam Can city was just rubble when I was there(68-69). We started running rivers down there. Our home base was An Thoi on Phu Quac(sp) island. Good to hear from you. my e-mail is bogey67401@yahoo.com
