Am not satisfied with the last 3 I have tried. One perc. 2 drips. Would appreciate advice as to which is best. One thing I find important is a hot temperature of the finished coffee. Can't seem to find one that has this. Thanks in advance.

Get one that has the cone-type rather than the flat-type of coffee holder...I have a Braun which works well...also, get one that has an insulated-type of coffee pot or carafe so that the coffee stays hot, but doesn't keep cooking and become bitter.

An important factor with making brewed coffee is to dump the filter and grounds as soon as it's done brewing. Otherwise certain oils and bitters will continue to drip into the pot, negatively affecting the flavor.

I got a press in September after tasting some outstanding coffee on a kayak trip. The press takes coffee to a whole new level of flavor...just make sure you use good Arabica beans...I prefer a espresso roast (Costco 3 lbs for $12.). Another good cup on the road is cafe Americana style...two shots of espresso into 6 oz. of hot water...delicious. I much prefer the "old school" espresso machines that have a pull handle and not the automated ones that Starbucks and others use. And I like 7 1/2's in winter!

dave-320C is right on. The French coffe press is the bomb. Best damned coffe I ever made or tasted and it is pretty quick and easy. You can grind your own but I quit that. I buy it at the grocery and grind it there before leaving, then keep it in a mason jar to stay fresh. The press is about $30. If you buy one you will never go back to an electric. trust me!! I have two, one real small one for traveling ( when traveling I use a Microwave), at home I boil the water in a pan. The nice thing is I make hot tea with it also ( which I drink a lot of) Fred Myers has them for a good $$

I purchased a Keurig a few weeks ago and for my taste it makes the best cup of coffee I have ever had from a home brewing system. A little expensive at about fourty cents per cup but I don't waste coffee by throwing away 1/2 a pot or letting it go bad on the warmer. If you want only one or two cups a day then my vote is for Keurig.

We have a Cuisinart with the stainless pot. We use the option of whole beans, it grinds then brews in under 10 minutes, very fresh.... Also like the stainless pot, it only heats up while brewing, but keeps the coffe warm for several hours, but does not continue to 'cook' the coffee. Unlike those separate appliances that grinds whole beans, this is very easy to clean...

I have had them all. The best was the Cory, DR vacuum type with gass upper.

You put the coffee in the top and the water in the bottom. The water boiled and went up, you cooked as long as you wanted, and after removing heat the coffee went to the lower part, sucked down by vacuum. There was a filter rod mad of glass with a stippled surface, you can see it in the picture.

I like the pod type coffee makers they have now, for a quick cup they can't be beat.

But I use my Goodwill 2 dollar one (brand new with an advertising logo, must have been a door prize) most of the time.

Bunn with the stainless thermal carafe. Makes a pot of coffee in under 3 min. and it does don't have a burner/heater so you coffee does not burn from sitting there a couple of hours. Keeps coffee hot for 5-6 hours. Jeff Ryals

I have used all but the vacuume extractor, it seems like a lot of work for something the French press does as well. The best flavor bar none comes from my French press. Kinda messy though and it's not a "fire and forget" type of thing, you have to be dialed in to get it right. Day to day I use a Cuisinart with a thremal caraff. It makes very good coffee and it keeps it hot. I hate the slow pour rate though.

The real trick to good coffee is good beans, good water and a very clean pot. Fail on any point and you get crap. Now for some reason, the coffee brewed on our Quail Unlimited hunts tastes like the best dang stuff ever to flow from a pot. I bought the last maker and it was nothing special so I think high dessert, cold weather, good friends and great dogs all add to the flavor.

Final thought, whatever you do get, don't get one with a heater for the coffee. 15 minutes after it's brewed and been "cooked" it tastes like burnt tar. Get a thermal caraffe and keep your brewed coffee in that.

Cheapest Bunn on Amazon.com is about $90.00. Get a FREE one (not BUNN) from Gevalia and quit your subscription. I have 1 or 2 around somewhere. We got a Hamilton Beech "Brew Statin" last Xmas from the kids and it's NOT BAD ...(anything HOT and that smells like coffee works for me in the morning). I thinks this could go either WAY....... to the "Perfecto's" or the "MAN wants JAVA" .

Chemex

Basically a funnel and an Erlenmeyer flask 'welded' together.

It uses heavy filters (just like those chem lab ones) which take out the nasty, bitter acids/oils - best coffee you'll ever drink.

I go one step further - I use the base of a French press (I threw out the press). Put the coffee into that with a little water to get the beans wet. Then boil water. Add hot water to French press and let stand for a minute or so. Dump into filter.

I know it's a bit of work, but the end result is worth it...

For further interest........I really like McDonald's coffee. All the fast food places, and a lot of restaurants, it's right up there.

So one time working on a new McD's I asked the owner what the secret was (other than pouring it into old ladie's laps), and he said its the fact the water is hotter than most coffee makers, resulting in a higher brewing temperature.

Had real good coffee in Denver at a steakhouse, asked what it was and it turned out to be Nescafe.

My restaurant owner friend (not McD's) used Torke' commercial.

so the bottom line is find what you like but don't be afraid to experiment.

Does anyone have trouble with their Bunn coffeemakers leaking water? We had one and our daughter had one and both ended up leaking water from the unit on to the counter. Is this from not properly cleaning the units or a flaw with the Bunn units. We liked the coffed the Bunn's made.

Check out the Technivorm. It is far and away the best drip maker made. French press or vacuum pot are great, just a little more mess to deal with. If you really want good coffee, try roasting your own beans. It's the single best way to improve any coffee maker that you already have. Check out www.sweetmarias.com Great selection of green beans and roasters. A good burr grinder is the second best piece of the equation.

We've got Capressos in each house - absolutely the best coffee I've ever had, but never hot enough. Apparently they are designed to produce coffee at optimal drinking temperature, but if you add cold milk or cream, that cools it off too much (and of course, as soon as it's out of the machine, it starts to cool anyway). But a quick shot in the microwave heats it up nicely, and doesn't spoil the taste at all.

Expensive, but marvelous taste.

Used one while i was in europe last month, told the wife and got one for christmas. nothing could be easier, no grinds, measuring water or coffee. Its pricy though, but a great coffee maker.
