Just thinking here and was wondering aloud as I have not READ the bill (kind of like MOST OF CONGRESS) but from what I have heard:
The committee, 12 members total from both parties and sides of congress, meets to decide the "cuts" required by Thanksgiving. If they don't agree, there is an AUTOMATIC, cut to the Defense Department of 50% and also a reduction to Medicare payments.
Here is what I am wondering: If they cut Defense by 50%; how will we fight the two (three in reality) wars we are currently in? Do we cut troops or equipment. While I would agree that there is some waste in their budget, it is NOT 50% of their budget and therefore something like this would WEAKEN us as a super power. Something just doesn't sit right here.
Secondly, cutting the payouts of medicare, would just affect those who currently take Medicare patients. Have you heard just how MANY doctors and healthcare providers are NOT TAKING NEW patients anyway. Just where do they expect them to go; to the emergency room and what will this do to healthcare delivery? What type of fiasco is this????
I realize this in not well written, I am just thinking out loud; but something just doesn't feel right....
Your thoughts.....
I understand that the Defense cuts are capped at 50 billion. That's not a lot of money in the big picture. The F22 program has been on the bubble for quite some time so I predict it will be terminated. (Bad for my Lockheed Martin retirement 401K)Also, their Joint Strike Fighter Program has to be in jepordy. I share your"something doesn't feel right" feeling. I'm more concerned in maintaining the valuable two party system and not letting a bunch (about 25) radical extremist ruin it.

We shouldn't be fighting three wars. Bring them home.
blade, have you seen anything in print on the "deal"??
check this Headline out. Never thought I would ever see it in reference to this Great country.
Regan said to defeat the Russians is to out spend them and they will go down. That is just what happened do to their poor econome. Now that is the very thing that is happening to us and many nations are helping us to spend ourselves into disaster and the american people can't see it. If they did see it they would not stand for these outlandish and childish decisions out politations are making. As of today for this bullcrap of the passage of the debt bill peoples 401ks will be very soon be nothing but a piece paper not worth anything. Interest rates will be increased.
If you think you were living in poverty let me tell you. This is your heaven and now hell is on the way. Wild Bill
Nothing in print yet. I believe I saw the 50 billion figure on the banner on the news. mallard2.....I'm with you!

We don't need to fight other peoples' wars of liberation for them. Sell em arms and train em if they back our life style.
Bring our sons and daughters home ASAP; close all but two of our most important overseas bases; that what aircraft carriers are for.
Do this over the next five to seven or so years, but do it!
There will be enough monies left over to fund SSA and medicare for a time long enough to fix them.
Ron Paul has the right idea.
Just my opinion.

Boehner (the Republican) -- sell us out? No, no, hell no!
Not unless you know how to do third grade arithmetic.
-Gary
It was the best deal that could be reached. No conservative or Tea Party type is of should be happy with it but..... The left-wing media would have crucified the Republicans if no deal was reached. Now they can only try to spin it that Obama, the great statesman, carried the day. Not even liberals will believe that.
Phase 2 is the all-important part of this bill. That is where the cojones will be on full display. It will also be the run-up to the 2012 election and all parties will be positioning themselves for that. You can bet that the Dems will be trying once again for increased taxes and higher spending.
Also, remember that when the Bush tax cuts expire, that will result in the highest tax increase in American history and an initial slug of cash into the US Treasury. How will that cash be used? Further, that tax increase will act as a brake on the economy which will not have fully recovered by that time.
There are so many moving parts to this thing that, at this point, no one can tell how it will shape up. Suffice it to say that if the GOP does not sweep Congress and the Presidency in 2012, we are in for more tough sledding. Within a few years, if not sooner, we will face the replacement of the Dollar as the world's reserve currency. Once that happens, forget a "AAA" bond rating. We will be lucky to have an "A" or "B" rating.
Idiots. They should have said "Cuts first, THEN we can talk about raising the debt ceiling."
The socialists played the GOP like a fine tuned fiddle.
Guess we will have to take them to the woodshed come election time in 2012.......again.
The sell out happened the last five years before the adults were put back in charge of the spending. It will take another election cycle to get the Senate and the White House back in adult decision makers hands. Then and only then will this country get turned around. Tonight is just the start of plugging the holes in the boat. We will take on more water for another year and a half but at least the holes can start being plugged.
The Republican party has once again adopted 'the go along get along theory' of non leadership. Very disappointed in the seemingly well rehearsed Boehner, McConnell response to the "new bill". So easy to be mis-led under the guise of doing good. Slashing our Defense and shrinking our military doesn't make sense in a chaotic world. And everything has to be done last minute and in a rush; ushering in another unread bill. That should send up red flags.
Frankly I don't see this as a victory for neither the Republicans or the Tea Party.
Fanning the flames of tyranny doesn't seem to be the way to go.
BAD303 has it about right. Most of us know this isn't the BEST deal, but it's A deal that involves a number of points Obama DIDN'T WANT. It's the first time the House has managed to PUT ANY KIND OF slow down on Democrat spending. Remember, when this discussion started, Obama wanted, and EXPECTED TO RECEIVE...a simple vote to raise the debt ceiling, with NO RESTRICTIONS. My concern with holding out for a truly GREAT deal is that we would have been delegated to being a small minority of "hold-outs", pushed aside, screaming at the top of our lungs...but UNHEARD by the majority of voters while the Democrats and moderate "Washington elite" Republicans went on without us to craft a much worse bill. Take this small victory...and move on to the next one.
Any bets on how many Tea Party members are going to be on that committee of 12?
Keeping them off the committee panel would be a pretty clever way for the republicans (and dems, too) to punish them for supposedly creating all the fracas.
"Suffice it to say that if the GOP does not sweep Congress and the Presidency in 2012, we are in for more tough sledding." The last time the GOP swept Congress, Senate, and President they ran up huge deficits and did not entertain any thoughts of a balanced budget amendment! Face it, whichever party that is in power spends our money like drunken idiots. All politicians care about is "their" party and their own reelection.
I too, am a little disappointed with the outcome, but few wars are won with the first battle. We did shake up the "business as usual" thought in DC.
We have many more battles to fight, more elections to win with the correct people on both sides.
We must make it clear we will no longer tolerate people who believe they have a right to have their hand in our pocket to support their spending habits.
Those who fear us like Joe Biden, Chuck Shumer, Hussien Obama and others of the criminal, I mean socialist behavior must be taken head on with a no prisoner approach. They asked for the civility, but were the first to drop it.
Every time they try to defame or demean us we need to slap them down and explain to them, we have rights to the polical process too, and their rights and demands do not supersede ours, regardless what their professors told them in college.
Turn it around on them. I'm going to make up a T shirt that says "Proud Member of the Tea Party Terrorists" and I am going to wear it. Remember how "in your face" the 60's radicals were?
We can do that too. We are mad as hell and we are not going to take it anymore.
I take exception to the term "drunken idiots". I have been both and I quit drinking and spending when I ran out of money....LOL...
I have lived through the "best of times", but depending on the time of my passing, I might die in the worst of times! And neither party has done much to change that opinion as far as I can vision.............merlyn....
Some good thoughts here, but our hopes lie on the shoulders of the 6 Republicans put on the special committee. Cause you damn well know the Democrats will put the 6 most liberal spenders on that committee, and they will want to save the entitlements and raise taxes.
Hope the 6 Republicans are Tea Party members....but I'm not holding my breath cause they have little seniority.
Those that voted against the bill will not be on the committee.
So the Idiot in Chief gets on TV, babbling about more taxes, the market takes a dive, gold shoots up to $1658.00 an OZ and everybody wonders why.
We all expected what happened was going to be,Boner,Mac, reid and the muslim would sell us down the river at the last minute. Those of you who say its a good thing, no new taxes, are dumber than dumb. Immediately after the vote, they all said, stopping a tax deduction is not a tax increase, BOOM, there it was, tax hike no 1 with more to come. obama is the hero. Bush tax cuts next. Jobs r next,Im going to do everything I can to stim-you know whos line of crap that is. 8 trillion dollar increase with another 5 trillion in the healthcare bill no one knows whats in the 75 pages of the new bill. Pass the vasoline
Wrong question. The real question is this: If Republicans had gotten everything their way, if we began today doing EVERYTHING right, could we rescue our dollar, and thus our economy, from the savagery it has undergone during the last 50 years? I would give it 50/50 at best, and ONLY because so many people across the globe have so much to lose if our dollar collapses. Given that this bill was nothing more than a delay of the inevitable, it really doesn't matter what congress did.
mrskeet, you posted that a number of Tea Party members had voted yea. Don't you remember?
Setterman - Do you have a question?
Uh, I'm pretty sure that WAS a question.
"mrskeet, you posted that a number of Tea Party members had voted yea. Don't you remember?"
I did not make a post stating that. Go check my post.
Is your brain getting oxygen? That is the question.
-Gary
Having a debt and a ceiling is a sell out. Everybody in Congress is a sell out. Scrap the whole bunch!
Harry
VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It has already been agreed ( as I understand ) that anyone of the congress and senate that voted against the bill cannot be on the committee. This what was discussed on the Hannity show. Being of what has happened in the past I think the Dumbocrats out f*xed the Republicans again. And the people will suffer. Wild Bill
I'm continually amazed by everyone on this site. People use the words "We will win back the white house", "were gonna trounce'em next election" and the like. I had to laugh at a few posts back when someone said "when the bush tax cuts expire, we are going to see the biggest tax in history". Folks if I am not mistaken, if the were passed once then rolled back, I'm pretty sure your using the fox news rhetoric simply because the values of the taxed are higher. The tax percentage is the same.
The trifecta of the collapsing economy started when NAFTA was signed. The second was the repeal of taxes "The Bush tax cuts." Last but not least, you've got 3 regional wars where victory is something you cannot declare.
The size of the federal government has balloned, least we forget all TSA employees are a newly forged federal employees. Oh, and I forgot FEMA. That's the most dangerous organization under the sun. If you don't think that's true, just stick your head back in the sand. Under the jurisdiction of the president, FEMA has power and authority to simply suspend the constitution at their own descretion. No freedom, removal of all firearms, incarceration without hearings or representation. Think I'm wrong ?? Just google it, it's all right their for you to read.
Have we been sold out, yes and it was along time ago. By people you voted for simply because what happens in Washington is parceled out to you through news clips and interviews of the news media. Our fathers, would be ashamed of what this country has become. Neither party is interested saving the US, they are only consumed with the intoxication of power. Bt raising the debt ceiling they have only elevated the height of our fall. Prepare, prepare prepare. History tells us that we must be prepared......
Insureguy Well said and true. Wild Bill
