Dear fellow shooters I need help with some opinions. The reason that I ask this question is that I am shooter with no powder to reload becuase the powder that I used is no longer in production. I had used Vihtavuori N3SM and N3SL. Great powders, but expensive, and gave great results. Both are discontinued now. I feel that reloaders can make better and more consistent shells than AA's or STS (personal opinion), So lets read what you reloaders use. I like powdering targets for I use a full choke on every thing, (I have choke tubes but the tighter the better). any magic Shells? Mike Sharkey, DC

It's hard to beat Hodgdons TiteGroup for 1 oz and 1 1/8 oz shells. Temp doesn't affect it and it reloads very consistanly. The powder is very dense though, so you will have to learn to use different wads than normal for 1 1/8 oz loads.

Consistent loading with Red Dot or Green Dot in a variety of hulls, wads and primers. Very consistant velocities....they're at or exceed published data.

I would recommend Red Dot or Green Dot or American Select or e3 or Clay Dot or Promo. Any of these will work great.

I can vouch for Red Dot, Green Dot, Clays, International Clays, and 700X from experience and have friends that have eventually rejected Promo for inconsistency(?) and will say say that none of those powders were more consistent over the chronogralph than IMR 700X. 700X will handle 7/8 oz, 1 oz, and 1 1/8 oz in reasonable velocities, saves cash by using lite charges, and has assisted in giving me several 100s up close.....breakemall....Bob Dodd

I like E3 for 1 oz and Green Dot for 1 1/8 oz in STS hulls. E3 is one of Alliant's newer powders and is super clean.

E3 has the same burning rate as Red Dot and Promo. Regarding cost, Promo costs less thn Red Dot and Red Dot costs less than E3. However, E3 is sometimes more efficient in certain loads which means that you use less powder to achieve the desired velocity.

Green Dot costs the same as Red Dot and is a little slower than Red Dot. Green Dot and is an old stand by for handicap loads.

I switched to E3 from 700 X.

If not for the cost, I would use more PB.

I recommend that you check out the powder profiles and relative burning rates of each powder on the Alliant web page.

Depends on the type of loads you're making?

I use 700X for my 1 oz "Xtra Lite" loads

---Clays for 1 1/8 oz "light" loads

--International Clays for my HNCP 1 1/8 oz 3 dram loads

I like E3 because it is very clean, it is not effected by extreme cold or hot and it takes less powder per shell so the cost is about the same as Red Dot or Green dot per shell. As you can see by all of the differing replies by some very good shooters with lots of experience you will be able to pick from several powders that will work very well. Most important is to use a manual for the recipe and use a scale to check the actual weight of powder.

Dear Mirage1 Its a statment on the consitency based strictly on a once fired shell being more pliable. I will admit it is very hard argument to make, but there has so to be something said for a custom shell for your style. I will admit it is a long shot for me to argue against you, and the big boys have million dollar equipment and I have a MEC. Thanks Mike Sharkey, DC

tripod- You said "700X since 1965 !!". That really means you have used at least three very different powders all labeled 700X. Which one did you like the best?

I was using Green Dot for handicap, but when I decided to go to the faster (1250 fps) shell, I tried the new Winchester Super Handicap. What a great powder!! In a Gold Medal hull I use a Fiocchi primer, 23.3 gr Winchester super handicap, 12SO wad, 1 1/8 oz of 7 1/2, 8700psi. Faster than hell, no recoil. It's made shooting from 26 yrds almost like shooting a fast 1 oz from the 16. Just point at the target and watch it break. No noticeable lead involved. Buy a 1 pound can and give it a try!!

In over 45 years of reloading I've used Red Dot, Green Dot, 700-X, 800-X, 7625, Winchester Super Target, Clays, Clays Intl. and PB. If you're looking for a powder with little keg to keg variations in drops-go PB or Clays! If you don't weigh powder charges as often as I do and really don't believe 1/2 gr. variations mean much from shell to shell-use any of the others!!
