Governor Pawlenty grew up in South St. Paul, Minnesota. The only child in his family to graduate from college, he attended the University of Minnesota (B.A., J.D.) and practiced law in the private sector. His public service career includes serving as a city councilmember and ten-year member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, including four years as House Majority Leader.

As Governor, he has balanced Minnesota's budget three times without raising taxes, despite facing record budget deficits. Governor Pawlenty's most notable accomplishments include proposing and signing into law significant new benefits for veterans and members of the military; enacting a property tax cap, eliminating the marriage penalty and cutting taxes; toughening the state's education standards; reforming the way teachers are paid through a nation-leading performance pay plan; instituting free-market health care reforms that increase accountability and provide tax credits to encourage the use of health savings accounts; and implementing a plan to Americanize our energy sources by generating 25% of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2025.

People vote for the top of the ticket. A VP candidate can sometimes tip a close state. Pawlenty can tip MN.

I heard a guy the other night say McCain should ask Condoleeza Rice to run as his mate and then ask LeBron James to be his Sec State. Then McCain needs to act as a match maker for the 2 and guarantee Republicans run things for a long time.

If McCain does select me to be his running mate, I will have to decline. I plan to be shooting at Middletown during the campaign and will be shooting in Florida in January when the new VP is moving into his office. Besides, I have been to Washington DC many times and I always get lost. How would it look to the public if the VP couldn't even find his way from home to his office? Our country does not need another VP who is lost.

Tom Ridge would probably be the best one for gun owners. While governor of Pennsylvania, he formed the Sportsmen's Advisory Board, a committee populated by residents who were die-hard outdoors folks to keep him abreast of their wants and needs. The committee chairman, Vern Ross, went on to head up the Pennsylvania Game Commission after Ridge went to Washington.

When he ran for his second term, a common sight was an orange bumper sticker that said, "Sportsmen for Ridge."

OK, all good answers.....but whether Ridge would be good for Sportsman, or Colin Powell might be someones dream candidate, or a woman.....If Pawlenty can tip Minnesota....Romney could tip Michigan that has MORE E.Votes than Mn.(17-10), and maybe even tip Mass.

Come on, think like a political strategist, not with your heart. You have heard (maybe) Obammies "Fried Chicken in every pot" and "I will lower taxes" speech....we should all be very afraid as McCain is NOT making headlines....the liberal press is screwing us.....

1.) the guy will wipe the floor with Biden's transplanted hair in a debate. 2.) he has executive experience with a track record of sucess. 3.) he can deliver Michigan and maybe get some New England voters.

Personally, I would have rather had the ticket as Thompson/Romney but we all know how that worked out. I think that as long as McCain does not shoot himself in the foot, it could be like the 1972 election again. Obama is a joke of a candidate and should be easy to take down.

Latest word is that Pawlenty is definitely NOT the one, that from the governor himself. Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska is apparently a possibility; Tom Ridge, while he could be very valuable in the cabinet, would likely be an electoral disaster, as he is pro-choice and that would cost McCain many, many votes.

We shall have to wait and see, I guess.

Smart move, may persuade lots of women to vote. She could get some prime executive experience. I could go for her in 2016, or 2012 if McCain wins and decides not to go for a second term.

Gutsy pick for McCain. She brings a lot of conservatism to the ticket.

She has a son in Iraq.

She has a Downs' Syndrome child. Don't know the severity, but it adds quite a burden and challenges to the family.

Admirable mom. Pro life. Pro gun. Believes marriage is between Bill and Mary, not Bill and Bob.

I think the so-called glass ceiling just fell in.

Down side? Maybe her lack of total executive experience; only two years as governor. No foreign policy experience, but that's what the President and Secretary of State are supposed to be doing.

Best, Dennis

Sarah Palin

Avid outdoors enthusiasts. Sarah and her father would sometimes wake at 3 a.m. to hunt moose before school, and the family would regularly run 5k and 10k races.

Palin was the point guard and captain for the Wasilla High School Warriors, in Wasilla, Alaska, when they won the Alaska small-school basketball championship in 1982; she earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda" because of her intense play. She played the championship game despite a stress fracture in her ankle, hitting a critical free throw in the last seconds. Palin, who was also the head of the school Fellowship of Christian Athletes, would lead the team in prayer before games.

In 1984, Palin was second-place in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant after winning the Miss Wasilla contest earlier that year, winning a scholarship to help pay her way through college. In the Wasilla pageant, she played the flute and also won Miss Congeniality.

Palin holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Idaho where she also minored in politics.

Her husband, Todd, is a Native Yup'ik Eskimo. Outside the fishing season, Todd works for BP at an oil field on the North Slope and is a champion snowmobiler, winning the 2000-mile "Iron Dog" race four times. The two eloped shortly after Palin graduated college; when they learned they needed witnesses for the civil ceremony, they recruited two residents from the old-age home down the street. The Palin family lives in Wasilla, about 40 miles (64 km) north of Anchorage.

She briefly worked as a sports reporter for local Anchorage television stations while also working as a commercial fisherman with her husband, Todd, her high school sweetheart. One summer when she was working on Todd's fishing boat, the boat collided with a tender while she was holding onto the railing; Palin broke several fingers.

On September 11, 2007, the Palins' son Track joined the Army. Eighteen years old at the time, he is the eldest of Palin's five children. Track now serves in an infantry brigade and will be deployed to Iraq in September. She also has three daughters: Bristol, 17, Willow, 13, and Piper, 7. On April 18, 2008, Palin gave birth to her second son, Trig Paxson Van Palin, who has Down syndrome. She returned to the office three days after giving birth. Palin refused to let the results of prenatal genetic testing change her decision to have the baby. "I'm looking at him right now, and I see perfection," Palin said. "Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking, in our world, what is normal and what is perfect?"

Details of Palin's personal life have contributed to her political image. She hunts, eats moose hamburger, ice fishes, rides snowmobiles, and owns a float plane. Palin holds a lifetime membership with the National Rifle Association. She admits that she used marijuana when it was legal in Alaska, but says that she did not like it.

Palin is strongly pro-life and belongs to Feminists for Life. She opposes same-sex marriage, but she has stated that she has gay friends and is receptive to gay and lesbian concerns about discrimination. While the previous administration did not implement same-sex benefits, Palin complied with a state Supreme Court order and signed them into law.

She supported a democratic advisory vote from the public on whether there should be a constitutional amendment on the matter. Alaska was one of the first U.S. states to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriage, in 1998, along with Hawaii.

Palin's first veto was used to block legislation that would have barred the state from granting benefits to gay state employees and their partners. In effect, her veto granted State of Alaska benefits to same-sex couples. The veto occurred after Palin consulted with Alaska's attorney general on the constitutionality of the legislation.

Gutsy call but a very poor choice. The basic valid Republican argument against Obama is lack of experience. So now they choose someone with virtually no experience and after all McCain isn't the exactly young. So there goes the lack of experience argument.

Obama gets assassinated as some people think and Biden takes over. McCain drops dead and we have an ex beauty queen with 2 years governing Alaska as President.

I don't think so. Even if she did campaign naked.

This is not a hard choice. It is either Obama as President immediately or Sarah Palin who only becomes President if McCain becomes incompacitated.

Additionally Palin's resume is already more impressive than Obama's, in public life since 1992, governor of the largest state in the union with many accomplishments. Obama has been a "community organizer" (agitator) in Chicago, a State Legislator and short term U. S. Senator with no legislative accomplishments. He quotes radical Saul Alinsky, associates with Weather Underground bomber Bill Ayers and others of questionable character. Take your pick.

Jerry944,

I reject the premise - the basic valid republican argument against Obama isn't that he's inexperienced...it's that he's a radical elitist. 20 more years of experience wouldn't make him right for America; it would just make him a more experienced radical elitist.

In my opinion, "experienced" in politics simply means, "Knows how to work the system." If you're happy about how the system works, and want someone who's an effective, competent caretaker of the existing system, then you're all alone on that point, because neither party is running on that position.

I'm not saying I want Ernest P. Worrel to be President...but I'd much rather have a State U. grad who is grounded in reality, than a Harvard grad with their head in the clouds.

Frank C, I know that you started this before the pick. well. I am thinking that he made a wise choice. I wanted MITT, the country has said that they did not want MITT. So Mcaine goes for an out of the box pick a wild card and what a wild card it is there are some 18,000,000 votes out there and they are not happy with the "ALLMIGHTY HIMSELF" so she is a woman , BIG DEAL! for my entire voting life we have all talked about having a regular person for president, this may be as close as we will ever get. NiMrod has 143 days of experiance, thats it. talks well as long as the script is there for him. She brings areal person to the table, Biden a CAREER politician" now thats change huh? This is change that the left wants i think in the nbext few days / weeks you will see her shine. and be welcomed by many. I did not really want to vote for Mcaine, but had no other choice. Now i feel better about my vote. RASCOTT
