Hello: It's snowing here in Milwaukee today as I am at my mother's condo taking care of her. For some reason I started thinking about all the good times I had years ago shooting the Grand American in Vandalia.

In the past, I have mentioned that a personal friend of mine was Vic Reinders. I can not remember a time that Vic did not eat at the local cafeteria on the grounds?

One morning, Vic invited me to join him for breakfast. I don't know if any of you have ever had a friend who was well known in trapshooting, but I got to meet so many of trapshooting's great shooters and ambassadors thanks to knowing Vic.

That particular morning I met the great Jimmy Robinson and a few other well known people involved in our sport.

So did you ever eat in the old cafeteria, and did you ever see or meet some of our sports best while in there? Steve Balistreri

Hi Scott: My memory is not the best but what I do remember most was how short he was. To me, he looked like an old newspaper reporter from the thirty's.

Vic introduced me to him and we shook hands and I thanked him for always promoting the sport of trapshooting. I then shut up and listened as they were talking about duck hunting.

As they were talking, they were both interupted a few times as friends and admirers came by to shake their hands.

When he left, Vic told me that trapshooters owe that man a debt of gradtitude for all the work he has done over the years for shooters and the game. I then told Vic that trapshooters also owed him a thank you for all the work he had done for our sport. Vic said something that I will always remember, "he said that trapshooting owes me nothing", it has given me more than I could ever repay".

He than said stop talking as my food is getting cold. Steve

I just received a PM from someone who said he had no idea who these two people are that I am talking about? I suggested that he read up on the history of the ATA and the Grand American.

In fact, it should be required reading once you take out a ATA membership that you read up on the history and also read up on the rules of the game. I love this game. I alway wished that I could of met Charlie sparrow young.

I once asked Vic who was the toughest competitor he ever faced? He did not pause for even a moment, as he said Ned Lilly. Steve

I ate fried chicken there with my cousin Don at the 100th grand. He was a yearly grand attendee since the 50's and his daughters worked the traps when they were old enough. He's passed away now. He had a story of his one daughter shooting the trap house, and after her misfire the ATA president came out with paint and told her to paint the shot mark.

I ate several meals annually from 1968 and during the Ohio State Shoot until the end. I thought the quality of the food went down when the ATA decided to use a catering service rather than the "Church Ladies" as I called them. Used to stay at Dessie's Motel. You could tell Dessy you "wanted a room for next year" and you would have it.

I ate there many times. It usually wasn't crowded. The big air conditioners out front were definately a plus. Local ladies out front in the serving line and all the high school kids washing dishes. Glass drinking glases and all the ice and cold water you wanted. I also liked the sausage guy who always set up near where the west intrance road, met the main road right behind the traps. The big mound of cooking onions and sausage really drew in the big belly trap shooters, like me. I still remember coming off the line and heading for the beer tent. I don't know how they kept that much beer, that cold. I went to the 27 for the first time there. I think it was 1988 or 89. I shot a 98 from the 26 with my 1936 M12 standard trap. All my memories of being there are good.

Senior,

Yes ate there many times from 1996 thru to 2004, Breakfast and lunch (always followed by a piece of pie) we stayed up at Huber Heights and ate at just about every restaurant in a 15 mile radius including each and all along Miller lane, Always at the "Buckhorn" and a Italian place I recall "Articoles" I think it was called, we ate there every year.

We have been to Sparta on 3 occassions and God willing will be back again this Summer, also onto the Cardinal Classic in Ohio. Sparta is not Vandalia but enjoyable just the same.

Regards,

Gary Kennerson........Sydney Australia ATA.96 05145

PS. Hope to register my 25,000 singles this trip.

May be because I am getting older, but it's nice when you can type a thread about the good old days of the Grand and fellow shooters remember. I have not been to Sparta and if my health improves I will go someday.

What I remember about Vandalia is being caught in the rain storms shooting. It seemed like every year it rained when I was shooting. I did not appreciate those days as much as I should have. When you are young, you think you will never get old, never get sick, and your shooting career will never end.

I remember sitting in those bleachers at night watching shoot offs. Hereing people in the stands gasp when someone would miss a target. People who are not in the the shooting sports just don't understand. If I can go to the grand someday, I will post it on here, as it would be nice meeting you fine people. Steve

Thanks for the memory Steve.

I would always visit the cafeteria once or twice every year, starting in 1974 until we left Vandalia.

My wife usually had a hard time getting me out of the beer tent.

By the way, do you remember when they only serve Hudepohl beer?

Lost a book Steve in a house fire in the ealy 90's that Jimmy had autographed for me sometime in the 70's as I recall. Why would you want to remember the rain? That's when the parking lot turned to "Pig Slime" and man did that crap stick to your car, especially when the guy next to you just put the hammer down and didn't care who he sprayed.

YES , ate there every morning through the early '80s. Didn't eat with anyone "famous", but did hear some "interesting" conversations while standing in line.

We then "moved up " to the Red Roof Inn. Started eating breakfast at Bob Evans , but that could be a topic for another thread! Those girls remembered everyone. Great memories.

Joe woods: Vic's little note pad was always with him. He had volumes and volumes of notes at his appartment. The man loved to write. When Vic wrote monthly for Trap and Field magazine, and after a number of years he gave notice to stop writing articles.

I asked him why did you stop? He said, I can no longer think of anything to write. I think I covered just about everything.

He's a short story about Vic. Vic one Saturday pulled up at the old Milwaukee gun club to shoot an ATA event in his green Rambler. A few of the guys shooting saw Vic and complained that he would probably win again.

Vic got on the last 16 yard squad and there had been a lone 100 hundred straight shot earlier that morning. One of the shooters attempted to warn Vic that a 100 straight had previously been shot, and he'd be better off just shooting the handicap and the doubles.

Vic said he'd take his chances. Well Vic ran the 100 and was in the shoot off. The guy who attempted to talk him out of shooting the singles was the other guy who ran the other 100 straight.

Vic beat him in the shoot off, as he also won the handicap and the doubles that day. After the shoot, I told Vic the nerve of that guy trying to talk you out of shooting the singles.

Vic said, I maybe old, but I'm not stupid. I knew that guy ran the lone 100 straight. Vic invited me to come by his appartment as he had some old Sportman review magazines that he wanted to give me.

As I walked into his basement, I see rows of new leather bags that he had previously won through out the years. Rows of new shooting sweaters, and shooting vests that he had won but never worn before.

I said Vic, your ammo bag is full out holes, your shooting vest looks like it's as old as you. Why not use a new leather bag to carry your shells and use a new shooting sweater or vest?

Vic in his gruff manner said" why in the he-- would I use a new bag when the one I use is still good? Why would I use a new sweater or vest when I know how to shoot in the one I already shoot in? Steve

I think they may have been pigeons from some flyer shoot nearby.

I ate there on numerous occasions and also enjoyed Christy's across the road in the strip mall. Interesting that Vic called Ned Lily the "toughest" shooter. Ned lived not far from here and his doctor was a trapshooter, who was also a personal friend of mine and told me of the event. He had been complaining to Ned that his trapshooting was lackluster at best and had persuaded Ned to come out to the club of which we both belonged to see if he could spot something he was doing wrong thinking that maybe if not there was something wrong with his gun. After watching Doc shoot for a minute or two he asked to see his gun. He borrowed a box of shells and promptly smoked all twenty-five targets even though he hadn't shot in years. He handed the gun back and said "There ain't anything wrong with the gun!" One of my prized possessions is a box of Winchester paper Super Target shells that once belonged to Ned.

Cafeteria-a daily ritual always. Above, lunch with a friend from StLouis and C.E. Barnhart around 1990 or so. J.J. Hamblen once introduced me to Grits Gresham on the Grounds and we three had lunch in the cafeteria. Heard a great story about a grizzly on a caribou hunt.

Ate there nearly every day of every Grand I attended. Met Jimmy Robinson, Elbert Throckmorton, Leo Harrison and others in or around the old cafeteria. The food was never spectacular, but tasted good and was pretty economical. I was frequently torn between going to the cafeteria or visiting the "sausage man" with his seductive smells.

Some great stories told on this thread. The people that walked into the old cafeteria were the best the sport of trapshooting could offer. The first time I went and shot at the Grand I waited until everyone left and stood by the trap house on the shoot off traps looking back at the grand stands.

It gave me chills thinking of the greats that shot on those traps. Walking the grounds was something very special. I guess you had to be their to fully understand what I am saying. It will always remain a special place to most trapshooters. Steve

Breakfast in the cafeteria was one of my favorite meals each day. Beginning in 1990, I came with Leo every year, before that I had been several other times with my dad. Leo and I always had to come early to get a parking place since we didn't camp at time. I almost always went to breakfast without Leo. He enjoyed a little time of peace and quiet, all to himself and I enjoyed the company of everyone in the cafeteria. Loved to drink cup after cup (those cups were tiny!) of coffee, never knowing who might sit down at my table. I brought home one of those cups after the last Grand. It was in the cafeteria that I lucked into making a deal for custom cabinets for our new house that we were building that summer (1996). Each morning after the national anthem was played it was time to start the day, confident that I would be one of the last to leave after shoot-offs that night.

I had breakfastm thyere almost every morning. Ever notice that they only had margerine and not butter? I found that the onl;y place they setrved butter was thye melted butter they put on pancakes so whenever I had bisquits I alweays went to the pancake area and had they brush the melted butter onm my bisquits.

Funny the little things you remember.

ps If the Grand were still in Vandalia I would probably still be shooting registered targets just so I could shoot at the Grand.

A few years ago while driving down 75, on our way to Fl.we stopped at the Grand, the gate keeper let me on the grounds for a look see.All the traps were long gone, but I stood where the 27yd. pad would have been on bank 18.(thats where I shot most of the time) I think I felt a tear run down my face.

It was a cold day in January but the thoughts of all the great years I had at Vandalia warmed my heart through...

I ate there the first year I joined ATA and the last year the ATA ran it.

I believe KFC was given the contract to run it which ....issed off the friend that started me shooting.

"They can't make enough money" was his exact words.

I can still hear that screen door slam.
