Well just finished my ket of green dot ,need to buy some more powder some say try e-3 or A S what's your opinion I mainly shoot singles at 16 yards 1oz and do some doubles . If it ain't broke don't fix-it or try something new
I like Green Dot for 1 1/8 oz at 1145 fps in Federal hulls and E3 for 1 oz. at 1180 fps in STS hulls. For 1 oz., I would give E3 the edge over Green Dot as it is more economical (less charge weight) and cleaner. E3 is one of Alliant's new premium powders.
Ed Ward
E3 for 7/8 and 1oz loads - good performance and clean, clean, burn. Will get high pressure for 1 1/8 oz. over 1200fps. rather quick.
Green Dot - 1 1/8 oz. - the all time 1 1/8 oz. load.
I am shooting 7/8oz loads with E3.
American select is the cleanest 12 ga. powder on the market with lt. recoil. I like it much better than red dot or extra-lite or even 20/28. Try it and you'll be surprised.
As I recall AS was developed with 1oz loads in mind. To date I haven't loaded E3. But it should be a dandy candidate. Green Dot while useable is not the most suitable choice for 1oz in my opinion. I have loaded it and its my belief better ballistic qualities can be acheived with one of the other two.
I think AS is too slow for 1oz, with low pressure, it didn't burn very clean when I tried it. May be ok for hot loads though.
Green Dot is very versatile and will perform well in 1oz loads if you stick to loads with sufficient pressure, suggest 7,500 psi or above. I didn't like E3, American Select is okay but Green Dot is better in my opinion. Alliant lists a number of 1oz loads 1145fps to 1300fps.
I like Green Dot, I can use it in the 12, 20 and 28 guage reloads. HMB
if you are looking at 1 oz loads at around 1200 fps or a little quicker you might want to give claydot a try, it is also an alliant powder.
american select is actually fairly similar to green dot, but a little faster burning. as some others mentioned, it is realtively low pressure in 1 0z loads. Both are a better fit for 1 1/8 oz loads.
I did not like e3 when I tried it. I had problems with it metering uniformly, too many too light of drops.
E3 is a very good powder. No metering problems for me (Ponsness Warren). GREAT for 1 oz loads. Less pressure build up than Clays, which is a bit peaky for me. Green dot is not an optimal powder for 1 oz loads. Its generally recommended for handicap loads, 1 1/8th oz. Very inefficient for 1 oz loads.

Green dot is better suited for 1 1/8 handicap loads. I've never tried e3 or AS but have lots of experience with clay dot. Excellent powder for 1oz. I've had very good results from extra lite too. Burns incredibly clean and is formulated for 3/4oz - 1oz loads. I've heard some people say it didn't work well for them for 1oz but I've had excellent results. As stated, green dot will load 1 oz but is not optimized for it.
I have used all three and like E-3 over American Select for 7/8 and 1oz loads. E-3 has always been cleaner and when I chronograph them they were the most consistence load I tested. I use E-3 for my 7/8 oz load for doubles. Still use Red Dot for my 1oz 16 yard load.
Green Dot great 1 1/8 oz 1145 fps for singles (if you shoot 1 1/8 oz for singles) and 1200 fps plus handicap powder. I still like PB better for the caps.

stick with the AS and GD

e3 for my 1 oz loads verrrrry clean and fast
My favorite 1oz powder is e3. It is very consistent, meters well and no longer costs more than the Dots. It is also great for 7/8oz loads. I like it better than Clay Dot and Clays.
AS is also a great powder. Although I try not to load to 7000psi, for some reason the 1oz load @ 1200fps using Remington components has no problems except in really cold weather.
If you were using GD for the difference in felt recoil, try a pound of AS and see how you like it. Otherwise, e3 works in any temp and gives superb results.
ZZtop......It looks like e3 covers a broad spectrum of 7/8oz thru 11/8oz. loads, in all three of the major hulls. I have been using Extra Lite and for 11/8oz loads I have been using American Select or Green dot.
1 oz. loads: Red Dot or e3
7/8 oz. loads: e3
