Rumor from Dean Townsend there will be no Martin money next year.
Well they sure did a GREAT thing the last two years, heck of a gift to the ATA and ATA shooters. Ain't been anyone as generous as the Martins. Our hats off to them, and a big THANKS. And this doesn't include all the investment in Tucson, truly impressive. I challenge anyone that can afford it do match what the group of generous people in Vernal Utah have done for our sport. Scott
I was curious why I haven't seen them here this year.
The rumor going around last week at Sparta was that there was no more money and they were not coming to Sparta this year due to the heat. Time will tell whether it was just that---a rumor.
It would be a shame but they can't do it forever.
Hopefully somebody, or some business, can step up.
The Martins did a fantastic thing of doing this on their own.
I feel personally the Martins did not have enough say to how it was done.
I may be wrong on this, but that is my Opinion and I am entitled to it.
I would like to hear from the Martin's if this was done to their liking.
It WAS THEIR MONEY.
I would like to see a shoot held by the Martin's at a club of their choice and with their OWN OPTIONS.
Gary Bryant Dr.longshot
They should be able to spend their own money how they see fit with out any outside opinions. If its on the trap field fine and if not thats fine also.
Sure is hot here. Mid to low 80's yesterday and the same for today.
I love it when the un-informed try to educate the rest.
Don
I was told and or given the impression that the Martins were going to try to reignite the fires of the Grand and it didn't work like they thought it would ... They are very generous and nice people that have gone far beyond the normal call ... They did it because "they can" in Bill's own words but to keep beating a dead horse ain't going to get it to run ... Only the Martins know for sure ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
If you average the hi-temps over the course of the grand, this will probably have been the coolest Sparta Grand yet.
Dr. Longshot,
You want to see what Martins do with their money at a club of their chosing??? Show up to Vernal in June and you will get a good look. They put on one hell of a great trap shoot and before that they have one heck of a fun shoot. They roll out the red carpet, one heck of a trap shoot. Scott
Scottjohnson Thank You I knew somebody knew something, great information, I want the best for the Martin's they deserve it and I commend them for their effort.
THANKS AGAIN TO THE MARTIN'S FOR THEIR EFFORTS.
Gary Bryant Dr.longshot
Yes, true. It was a good thing. But let's not forget that Bill and Ruthie Hunter, and countless others have given hundreds of thousands to gun clubs and trapshooting in general over the years, only on the condition of being annonymous, or at least without the huge publicity and "Thank You" campaigns.
Seriously though Doc, you should show up 1st week of June. We did last year, it will be a yearly deal for us. Lots of ALl Americans and a lot of good people. Hell of a shin dig. You shoot during the day, afterwards they have drinks and a meal and a band, you get to dance and all on their tab. Great time. Scott
Come down to Vernal in September for the Western Grand and see what it's all about.
Mike.
The Martins probably aren't coming because they saw the weeds encroaching on the sidewalks.
On a serious note,
Thank you Martins for all you have done for trapshooting. The idea of an event in their honor is wonderful!!
Did a little history check and saw that there are 305 less shooters in the Martin Lewis 2012 vs 2011. Great that they donated the money but does not seem they are getting the desired results?
Paul H Imperial, Pa
Lyle, they state in the program no refunds after a certain date, so you can see where Stacey is coming from. Sorry to hear about the emergency surgery, just the way life goes sometimes. And I can only speak for myself and am not kissing ass, I just know a well run shoot when I attend one, and that in my mind deserves a compliment. Scott
Lyle,Scott, I had a similar issue at the 2004 Grand. They found the reason reasonable enough to refund my money even though it was stated in the program.
Thanks to the martins and the Hunters for their generosity over the years..
If this is true about the Martins maybe some of the ATA big wigs should go east and talk to Mr. Fishburn about added money....jmho
Lyle, My "opinion" my be different than yours on this issue. I am a president of a small club here in Montana, I donate a large amount of time to our club, in up keep, promotion and working on expansion, so if I miss out on an entry fee, its for that club that I was gonna shoot at's benefit. And I want every club possible to make it and be available to anyone to shoot at. I see your side, but you are not doing yourself any favors being negative on the Vernal club. The amount cannot be that high or worth it to beat on people that have done a lot to promote ATA shooters and clubs. Please think about that before you type stuff you may regret later, just a thought and my opinion. Thank you and have a good day. Remember the good stuff and let the bad times go away. Scott
I understand the No Refund and not giving your money back, but does a club offer credit for another shoot? Maybe within a one year period? Only seems fair. Or even a 50 percent discount on the next event? Something? I know if I felt ripped off, I would never shoot at that club again. Now, if it was totally my decision not to show up, I'd bite the bullet.
Maybe ask Stacey for credit at another shoot like Utahyork suggested above, she may give you all or part and thats better than nothing. Give a call and see. Scott
Lyle, I think your reason for not attending the Vernal shoot, after you paid your entry in full, was a reasonable request for the club to return your entry fees paid. Did you let the club know you were not coming before the events and options where completed? Also, I hope your son had a speedy recovery from the emergency operation in the ICU. Priorities First, We need to take care of 'our own'. Tom
Not taking sides I did shoot Vernal a few years ago and was told that they only have space for a limited number of shooters with the traps they have at the club. I called Stacey and asked if there was a opening I wanted to drive down and shoot the event a 6 hour drive. she took my phone number and said she would call me back. Stacey called me an hour later and said she found a opening in a squad and to send her a check right away as the shoot was booked solid. I sent the check and had a wonderful experience. I mention this as I an glad your son is OK first and most important. How ever someone that wanted to shoot the event was shut out because of your reservation. Should they make an exception for your unfortunate emergency after stating clearly no refunds. I think not because it would not be fair to other shooters who paid and did not attend. I understand your feelings over the loss of the money and that you feel this is an exception but I do not agree with your method of using TS as a venue for your displeasure. I am almost positive that the Martins do not need you shoot fees I will not defend Stacey or the Martins and Vernal trap club it is not necessary you are most likely a nice man doing yourself an injustice. There I said how I feel just like you did it is after all our right. Buddy Walters Time heals all wounds
I agree with Lyle. How long does it take to write a check?
Not popular opinion, obviously, but common sense and taking care of each other in times of need should prevail.
Practically, there are tax considerations when giving money to the ATA. Since the federal tax rates for next year are unknown any donor may be holding back to make a decision.
What is all the talk about a refund. Wrong thread?
Well ???
TRUTH ???
Or is Dean Townsend guilty of spreading "Rumors" ?????
With all the rumors facing the ATA lately, we should know for sure if this is true before jumping the gun.
shotgunpeople, all my sources say it's so but who knows what truth is with the ATA? Brad
Bull S--t ! Sources? I just spent two weeks working fron 8 to 5 classifying shooters with Dean and no Dean does not start rumors.Funny thing that during the EC. CHC meeting that none of the EC was aware of this.Brad just keeping poking the ATA and we will keep having a wonderful time at Sparta with out you. I just had two great weeks at a great run shoot and it really seemed every one else I saw was also having a Grand time.
Also I'll take any bet that even though the Martins have been great, we will have a Grand in 2013 with or without their money and we will always be thankfull for their help.
Untill you hear it from the Martins mouth it is just that; Rumor. And Brad I know the TRUTH with the ATA!!Its all public record.Just ask!
Terry Dean CHC Ky. Delegate
As long as Big Heap brought up tax considerations, I'll put my two cents in. The tax deduction for contributions to the ATA are limited to 30% of income. Any unused amount is carried over to the next 5 years. It may be that there is no tax benefit left. Just speculating.
Mr. Dean,
I'm NOT the one who said Mr. Townsend told this to anyone !
Just trying to find out an answer to this thread.
I agree with Brad and I'm sure there are many like me sitting on the sidelines trying to sort the facts from fiction out. Guess it doesn't matter any more anyway...I'll go and see my friends just the same.
We'll see if the EC knew or not in the future. Perhaps they "forgot" to mention it.
At least we know someone within the ATA reads these posts. I have heard "Rumors" that the ATA officials don't waste their time reading BS.COM
I think a lot read but most are smarter than me and don't post or arque with a faceless ,nameless people that just like to spread rumers or stir S--t about the ATA.
I think this site has it's place and was great when it first appeared! You could learn about shooting, find what you needed to shoot, where to shoot.
Now if you watch you will find a list of people you can count on two hands that all they do is stir the pot and it's always the same few. Not sure now weather this site is usefull at all anymore for promoting the sport many of us love!
Really a shame!!!!! TD
Come on guys. The Martins may very well not be planning on contributing $100,000's of thousands to the ATA again next year. They've already done plenty. Did anyone really think that was going to be a never-ending source of funds?
Making it sound like some kind of underhanded rumor is just more spin some of you are picking up, even though the original poster probably didn't mean to make it sound that way.
The rumor part of it is the posters that make it sound like it was the ATA's fault and the Martin's didn't like how the money was distributed. Maybe...maybe not, none of us know. I will say that I thought the Martins had directed how the money was to be distributed, but I don't have any inside info.
Well said Gary.
Now that the ATA put up $100,000 it had to come from someplace (think Members dues, fees etc)) so I would say that kind of makes it every members business if they attend the Grand or not or are we missing something ..? WPT ... (YAC) ...
You're right, Bill. The $100,000 did come from "some place." That "some place" was the 2011 Grand American.
The 2011 Grand American had a "profit" of $252,697.
At least $100,000 of that went back in to the 2012 Grand American as the 900-target Preliminary Week HOA Lewis.
Don't the state organizations receive money and trophys for their state shoots from the ATA. If you don't go to your state shoot, part of your dues are used without your participation. How is this any different?
And, Grand Attendance was up on the preliminary events - even if you take out the two additional events. I don't think all of the added money is the driving factor on whether or not you attend the Grand. It is after all, the Grand American. The largest trapshoot in the world. It is an event. It is a competition and should be treated as such.
When I read this,it comes across as disrepectful to a family who is very caring and generous to the entire shooting community! I hope the moderator dumps this classless discussion.
