I am looking to buy a small metal lathe that will habdle 12" to 14" stock or larger. Does anyone have advice or personal information on these small lathes. Would consider a larger one if price is right. PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT rouserealty@yahoo.com. I do not get back to this site very often any more so e-mail is best. Thanks

Enco is cheap import and a knock off of the Emco name. Emco is a high quaility Austrian made lathe.

You might want to look at a Clausing lathe, a 14" starts at around $2,000 used of course and find yourself a 6 jaw Buck chuck. You will also have to buy a 3 phase converter, or a pony motor setup.

I agree with Toolmaker.

A good used quality American lathe beats most of the current imports.

There is a used machinery dealer who is in Cleveland, Oh. that is on Ebay.

He gets a lot of used lathes and may have something you are looking for.

If nothing else, it will give you an idea what they are selling for.

Regards....Gerald

I have an Enco 14x40. Great lathe! Sure it is made in China. You cannot beat it for the money. I paid $2400 for it in 2000. They are a bit more now.

If you are talking about 12" to 14" LONG pieces then you need a small bench top lathe.

Buy bigger than you need. You will not be sorry.

Jim Skeel, the op never specified what his 12"-14" need is. He might need a swing of 12-14 or he might need a bed length to turn work 12-14 inch long. He should be more specific to what he plans on doing with this lathe. Somebody who plans on doing rifle barrel work needs a lathe with a spindle bore of 1 3/8" minimum, and if he needs a lathe for light turning of work 12-14 inch long and making firing pins etc. a good lathe at a reasonable price that runs on 120 volt would be a South Bend 9" or 10" like the one below.

He may be talking about a gun stock. The use would be for boring a center hole in the blank, for the bolt before duplicating a stock. Though you would need a longer bed for that, once you attach the blocks. Just a small possibility.

What would be a good lathe for this use?

I bought a used Clausing 4900 series off of Craigs list for $1200. Came with 2 and 4 jaw chucks, steady rest, face plate, lathe dogs, drill chuck, quick change tool holder, and it had a single phase motor on it. I have seen lots of similar deals on Craigs list, just have to watch for them.

Hey Toolmaker, better not let OSHA catch you with that open belt on your South Bend. OSHA is run by Democraps.

Yeah, if he needs to swing 12" to 14" then a hobby lathe is out of the question. I have an old Atlas I got pretty cheap, with some tooling and accessories. Naturally it will easily handle foot long stuff and more. I would imagine one could expect to find one like mine for 300 to 500, in good shape. Clausing/Atlas has a supply depot in Goshen, Indiana. They have some Atlas parts.

Chuck, the South Bend lathe in the picture gets used 3-4 hours per year and is setup to do 1 thing. I bought 8,000 7.62x51 boxer primed blanks, 1 is inserted into a collet with a stop installed. The blank star crimps are parted off, powder emptied out, ran through a resizing die, then trimmed. I get 4 additional reloads before they go into the scrap bucket. Years ago I paid $80 per 2,000 blanks which came from Australia and were made for practice in FN-FAL rifles with blank firing adaptor.

Sorry ENCO. EMCO makes very small watchmaker/jewelry lathes as I recall, like Sherline. I don't believe anyone manufactures a bench top lathe anymore anywhere except the Chinese. Well, maybe in England there may still be one produced. There are lots of different name brands of bench lathes, but they all come from the same two Chinese factories.

Check your local Craigslist. If you know what you're doing you can get amazing deals on used tools. When it comes to small toolroom lathes the gold standard in my opinion is HARDINGE.

Go to surplusrecord.com, they have hundreds of lathes listed including a number of Monarch 10 EE's. You should be able to pick one up at a reasonable price. They were considered a top of the line toolmakers lathe. Clausing and all the rest don't come close. Hendy, Leblond, Lodge and Shipley, American Pacemaker (although at the end they were made in India), Hardinge which is more of an instrument machine and Sidney were all USA made and none better in the world. Unfortunately the machine tool industry is just about gone from these shores. Kind of makes you wonder what might happen in a long term national emergency.
