Just want to vent. I have a Ponsness Warren 800 Plus and it appears to be wearing out. I'm spending more time adjusting, and repairing than I am loading, and it's frustrating.
Anybody having problems with their 800 Plus machine. I purchased an 800 Silver ST years ago and wore the machine out. 50% of the machine wearing out was due to my lack of maintaince. That machine loaded about 30,000 hulls.
Four years ago +/-, I purchased an 800 Plus. I keep it well oiled and greased. It has been flawless up until now. Now the primers ride up on the left brass track, the auto hull feeder doesn't feed the hulls well. The hulls seem to shoot right past the hull pocket, and I can't seem to keep o-rings under the powder/shot hopper base plate. I also had to purchased a new factory aluminum powder/shot base plate. This machine has also loaded about 30,000 rounds.
I'm starting to wonder if these machines are junk?
I don't force anything, I clean the machine regularly, lube all hindge points, and cover it after each use.
I'm thinking of switching to a Spoiler. I hate to do it but I don't have time to play with this 800 Plus, and I don't want to purchase another 800 plus.
Andy
Spoiler??
Give Jim "Whiz" White a call... He's rebuilding my Platinum 2000 right now.
I have over 30k on mine, and it is showing zero wear.
What primers are you running?
Have a PW 2000 and a Spolar. Unfortunately the PW sits idle most of the time. The PW has about 20,000 through it, and the Spolar is getting close to 25,000. Besides oiling and lubing the Spolar hasn't missed a lick. Have the PW setup for 7/8oz for first shot of doubles. Took me forever. Spolar loads 1 oz and 1 1/8oz with no problems. Both Remingtons and AA hulls. All I have to do is change wad guide fingers when they get worn out. And of course powder and shot bushings. Just my opinion. Mike C. Groveland, CA
I use Cheddite primers, and have been using Cheddite for several years with no problems.
Last month I reloaded 3,200 AA & STS. The first 3,000 without a glitch. The last 200 is when the problems started.
I just can't believe this is happening. I am so disgusted I'm about ready to just buy shells. If I have to buy a reloader every few years it's not worth it.
I did talk to Jim Whiz last night and tonight. I don't want to repeat what he said.
I'll look at it again Saturday. I will have cooled-off by then.
Andy
The reason I asked about primers, mine won't feed Fed 209a without malfunctions, due to the sharp edge face of the primers. And they can flip over or sideways in the primer pusher, bending the pusher.
And, the Fed 209A won't travel the chute worth a $hit, due to the sharp edge.
There is a large learning curve with the PW.
I mostly use it for only my top trap load.
I have 40,000 + through my 800+. I don't think it's even broken in yet.
My Spolar, sn#1238 is just past 183,000 in all 4 gages total and I haven't spent $50 on parts. Sat down and punched out 1250 410s the other night and tossed 8 for bad crimps. Boxed the rest and switch over to 28s.
My 800B .410 has well over 100,000 shell though it and all it needed was a few shots of lube. Go with a Spolar if you are having problems with the PW reloader. Sometime it takes a different brand to make you happy.
Many PW malfunctions can be traced to "adjustments" made by mechanically inept users for whom a screw driver has too many moving parts.
From my own experience I've bought 3, 900 Elites in as many years from guys who had given up on them because they were "just plain unusable" and bought MECs instead. Now they're happy and I have 3 excellent presses that needed to have only a few parts replaced that were worn due to age and a LOT of sloppy misadjustments I had to undo.
Keller
Buy a Spolar and you won't need access to a toolbox!!
I have had two late model PW's, 1 800+ and the new Patriot. I have two Spolars. If you wish to reload, buy the Spolar and your tool box days are behind you. Use top grade oil and grease, Spolar will run much longer than you will.
Spolar all the way
Keep it in perspective, a "Spoiler" costs almost twice as much as an 800+. It's not fair to PW to make a direct comparison.
I believe the reason you do not hear about folks not getting along with their Spolar is there is just no where to go except back to a MEC. They just put them up for sale and move on.
All reloaders require some adjustment at some point. Some are easier to understand than others. Find one that you can get comfortable with. You always have the option to buy shells.
Jim Skeel
Yeah. Sometimes I must adjust the crimp depth on my Spolar when changing shells. It requires a open end wrench and a regular screwdriver. Most households possess those tools. No need for a sledgehammer, numerous allen wrenches or mechanical aptitude!!
I own Spolar #60 and it works great. A pleasure to use. I have it set up to load STS 1 oz loads and it just keeps going. It does prefer Winchester primers. There really isn't any discussion as far as I am concerned, the Spolar is the best loader you can buy hands down.
Believe it or not the only loader that comes close is an old PW single stage that I use for Federal papers! Slow but fool proof.
People who enjoy "fixing things" will probably enjoy a Ponsness Warren.
If you have limited time, and are buying a loader to LOAD with, (not brag about how good you are at fixing things), get a Spolar or Mec.
I've had two P/W progressive machines, one from the older generation, one from the newer, and have concluded they are simply not worth the trouble, when there are other products out there that *always work*. Just because something is built "heavy," does not mean that it is built "well."
Been loading on a pacific 366 since 1986. Boughrt a new Spolar a couple years ago. Loaded with it for about two weeks and put the 366 back in place. Gave the Spolar to the kid. He loves it. I could not get use to having to push the lever all the way to the top. I'm using the same 366 I started with. Bill
I have 17 plus years on my spolar 150,000 loads for myself and wife completely trouble free Dixie and staff answer all questions Denny worth every dime
I have a PW 2000 needs work. The loader is about 8 years old, about 12000 - 15000 loads per year. What does Wiz charge for a rebuilt? I would like to send it to him. If he would be at the Grand could I give it to him there.
So according to a PW rep, there are two reasons why we don't hear too many bad reviews about spolars.
1. We are a quiet bunch, and sell the loader instead of talking bad about it
2. We paid too much money. and don't want to admit to making a mistake.
Is this really PW's marketing campaign? I get that PW wants to push their products, but why knock another brand in the process. Especially one that is far superior, as evidenced by several users. Of course they are probably just brainwashed into loving their spolars. Spolar is a better loader. Period! Is it a better value? That is up to the individual writing the check.
The solution to Johnny's comment above is to buy two PW's and be twice as P'd off. :-)
Happy Spolar owner (x-PW owner)
Brownk80
I bought my Spolar in the fall of 2008 and am just four thousand short of 100k loads on it.
Needless to say, I really, really like it.
Bob
BrownK80, that's too funny, but you're right. :)
You are my hero Fish! LOL!
I love my 800B PW. A few tweaks by a friend and she loads hulls just like new. I got a good deal on it though, best $50 I ever spent.
When she wears out, I'll go Spolar or another Hornady 366. It will depend on negotiations with the War Department...
I think you should buy a Spolar and just sell your 800+PW.....Just to show you what kind of a guy I am I'll give you 100 bucks for it sight unseen. I'll even split the shipping cost with you......This offer is also good to all the other guys that are having problems with their 800+'s, 900's, 950's........Terry
Fish you win hands down a sweet set up for sure
I had all four gauges of MEC 9000s. Sold them and bought a 800+ w/ four gauges of dies. Kept it for about 3 months, sold it, and went back to MEC 9000s. I wouldn't ever load on an 800+ again if it were given to me. I mainly switched b/c I wanted to improve the quality of my 28ga loads. Not only did the quality of the 28ga shells not improve, the quality of all the other gauges went down. I also had to spend more on parts in the 3 months I owned my PW than I have in my entire life for MECs (nothing on the PW is cheap to replace). Never could get consistent crimps or consistent primer seating depth w/ the PW either, neither are a problem w/ the MECs.
I bought my PW used. Coincidentally, I have a friend who was going through almost the exact same deal at the same time I was, except he bought all his stuff brand new. After breaking the 2nd or 3rd index pad (while he was on the phone w/ PW being walked through how to make adjustments), and being told to take a hammer to his brand new press, he boxed everything up and sent it back for a refund.
I wouldn't mind trying a Spolar, but will probably never be able to justify the $ for one. Until then, I'll keep plugging away with my $300 MEC 9000s.
I started with a Dillon and never liked it since the day it showed up. After a year down the road it went. Then got a 800+ and loaded 20 -30,000 rounds through it and for the most part was good as long as you stayed up on the maint. Then sold it for the Patriot and other than the Patriot having some up graded things over the 800+ they were built the same way and loaded just like one would expect out of a P/W. The P/W is a great loader and will load hundreds of thousands of shells. They are a mechanical device and if your are not mechanically enclined don't buy one. Now I own a Spolar and the Spolar is the top dog of reloaders. They are so smooth and just the way everything is thought out makes them as good as it gets. Most people that bad mouth a Spolar are the people who can't afford one so off to there Mechs they go. If you bad mouth a Spolar you know nothing about shotshell reloading period.
I can see why Skeel likes the PW's, he would starve to death trying to sell upgraded parts for Spolars, lol. Harv
Once and a while someone will screw up and ask for advice on whats wrong with their Spolar on this site. I don't give a rats ass what everyone says if its mechanical it WILL wear and it WILL go out of adjustment due to wear or stupidity. Otherwise why would anyone from Spolar have to answer questions like stingray refers to.
Good post mac1
I have a P-W Silver ST I bought in 1986 and it has well over 400,000 rounds through it and it's still cranking. I put a Hydro on it about 8 months ago and I had my doubts about the move because the machine was so old but no problems to date. I would like to try the electric drive just because it keeps everything above the bench but I am happy with the set-up as it is now. I had a Spolar and could not see that it was any better than the P-W so I sold the Spolar and used the extra money for components. Don't get me wrong the Spolar was a great machine just no better than what I had and I didn't like the way the primers just sat on top of the post and could fall off easily.
