A very interesting web site on the history with pictures of the Peters Co. in Kings Mill Ohio
Thanks for the history of the Peters company. I remember shotgun shells with the name Remington-Peters on the box. John
This is some ammo that survived all these years, the box on the right is marked 1941 the trapload is marked 1942 both box's are full, paper with overshot card.
Those are nice Toolmaker. Remember the smell of the empty casings as a kid when you'd find them on the way to school, the paper cases, not quite that old though.
I like those Victor boxes. Has the advertisement "Rustless" on there. Can you explain that?
Probbly means they don't rust and stuff.
-Gary :P
"Ruthless" means the primers are non corrosive. Another slogan was "non mecuric" many years ago ammunition Mfg's would mercury fulminate as a primer compound which was corrosive. You had to clean the ASAP when using this type of primer or it would start rusting fast. This compound also attacked brass cartridge cases which made them brittle.
Very interesting. The newspapers were bluntly honest back then. "Blown to bits"
Thanks TOOLMAKER.
Getchu one on ebay, Boy!
-Gary
This is what the front of the shells looked like, the ones with the roll crimp and over shot card are #4 game loads. The other 2 are trap loads with a star crimp and loaded with Hercules red dot powder, as advertised on the flap.
I'll pass Gary. Besides, TOOLMAKER has me penciled in on his will for all the stuff his wife considers junk. LOL
TOOLMAKER, I've got several boxes with the Kings Mills address also, Thanks for the link Cy-Kick.
Matt, like I told you before, when I bite the bullet you have to be at my place before Friday morning. That's trash pickup day.
My dad told the story that in the 20's at Vandalia, Gus Parrot was the Peters "Pro". He had a trained goose with a blanket showing the Peters Logo draped over the goose and led the bird around the grounds on a leash. Very popular with the ladies and the little kids.
Gus Peret?
I used Peters ammo in the late 1940's. It was the same as or similar to Remington at that time. Kinda like Winchester-Western. Clyde
TTT interesting....
Remington is remaking "Peters Target Loads" in the late '70s/early '80s style box. I bought two flats for the heck of it. They look like Blue STS shells with white print on them
Steve, I think your refering to the shells that ended up being called the "Blue Tragics" They were preceded by the RXP's (good shells) if I remember right. The blue bombs were the reason remington switched to the green shells to overcome the stigma of too many shell seperations with "slugs" (shot & wads in the front half of the case) going downrange. The change worked too. the Greenies were around until the STS took over their market.
Big Jack
@ Big Jack.
The original Peters Blue Magic was c. 1976/77. The RXP was before the Blue Magic.
The "Peters Target Load" was a Blue Magic hull simply called "Peters Target Load" and not Blue Magic.
Blue Magics were loaded with the old 97-star primer with uncovered flash hole. Peters "Target Loads" were the same, Blue Magic hulls with covered flash hole (209) primers.
The minor differences on the boxes were - the Peters Blue Magic said "Blue Magic" and was on a silver/grey background with the ornate scripting and duck on the box. The "Peters Target Loads" had the same pattern, script and duck but the background was changed to a light tan. These were a "stop gap" until the first green Premiers came on the scene around 1984/85. I swear there is no difference in the plastic between the Blue Magic and the Green Premier. The late, great Floyd "Jiggs" Cochran - CTA Hall of Famer and long time Remington ballistician told me there was no difference. Being an 870 shooter when I started and having shot the 870 and 1100 for tens of thousands of Blue Magic factory loads when I was a teenager and Blue Magic reloads (right up until very recently) I have NEVER had a case failure of the type you describe. I have heard of it, and the guns I have heard of that occurring in had aggressively reworked chambers and forcing cones. My barrels were always factory standard and never altered. I have not heard of a Blue Magic failure in a standard spec, factory barrel. That doesn't mean it never happened, just that I don't recall ever hearing that. The worst thing I noticed with Blue Magics, is the mouths would get fried after a few reloads and sometimes they would develop a pin hole burn through in the hull body - which is NOT good and may lead to the separation you describe - but I always looked over my hulls well and discarded any that were even questionable.
The "Peters Target Loads" I bought this weekend are obviously STS hulls dyed blue to bring the "retro" appearance of the old, blue hulls. The STS is the epitome of target hulls IMO.
These box's of Peters ammo is what Steve was describing. The owners, administrators and moderators of the Trapshooters.com have no obligation to keep objectionable messages off this forum.
