Here's my gun for 2012. I upgraded the holosight to an EoTech 512. The old Bushnell wouldn't adjust vertically any longer.
Gun is a basic 30 inch barrel 870 with a fixed full choke having .035 constriction. The bead is removed.
Stock adapter is from Cavalry Arms -- SST-870 with the rail turned around and chopped off to get the scope closer to my eye. I did this for a larger field of view. Neighbor has a hobby mill that took some of the metal off to allow this.
Stock tube has two copper pipes filled with lead in it and the grip is filled with shot. Total weight is 13.5 pounds. Soaks up the recoil nicely. Most of the weight in on my right hand, which is always close to my body, so I don't find it to be too heavy.
The pitch is 6 degrees which is built into the AR stock. Pad hardware is home made and keeps the lead weight from falling out. Fore-end is special order from Remington. Length of pull is completely adjustable.
Trigger is a modified 870 trigger lightened up to 2.5 pounds of pull which you really don't notice because it hits the second joint (so it pulls harder). I considered thickening up the grip to pull my hand back and use the first joint or fingertip pad to pull the trigger, but I forgot about the idea. There's plenty of room for improvement here.
Several guys have tried to talk me out of this gun. It isn't going to happen. I tried shooting a standard rib gun last year and that lasted two weeks before my left eye took over trying to help out looking around the bbl. The only thing I will do is try an autoloader in a similar setup to see if I can lighten the weight for when I get old.
Approx costs: gun is $250, holosight is $400, stock adapter $250, stock $80, pad $40, fore-end and grip - I forget. Total is about $1100. It's really fun to shoot.
Any way you can get some video of this gun in action with you smoking these targets? I'd like to see it in action.
I would too. Video is a great teacher and self analysis tool. Phil Kiner's clinic showed that the camera does not lie. Maybe that's what I need to tune up my scores to the next level. Good idea. I'll see what I can come up with and share it with you.
I'm curious with the 1 MOA dot and the 65 MOA circle around it where you are placing the clay at the moment of firing, and how the circle corresponds to the pattern?
Is that the stock assembly I sent you?
Nice!! Can Tron do an adjustable comb and maybe put 3/8 in toe kickout on it?
Brian,
Yes, that is the stock you sent me. Thanks, it's working great.
The circle is approximately the size of the pattern at striking distance, although it has been a while since I measured it there. I normally just shoot it at 12 yards to check the poi once in a while.
In terms of firing, I shoot when the circle gets to the target. I can't really tell you if it's the first edge of the circle, the dot, or last edge of the circle. I don't really know because I'm looking where I should be looking. Hm. Interesting question.
I hope I don't cause you to miss now trying to figure it out!
Heh.
One thing a fellow shooter noted is the clear view all the way down to the house. That helps you see the target early at very narrow angles and to the left when the bbl would normally be in the way. It's no wonder my left eye was trying to help out. After a certain age, I think less flexibility in the brain keeps the switch back to the eye on the gun from happening like it should.
Based on a right hander I smoked last night, and happened to notice the bird/bead relationship consciously, it's the second edge of the circle. But as you know, everything is moving, lock time is involved, etc., so I'd rather say, 'when it gets to where I'm looking'.
Joe, what yardage are you hitting the clay at? In other words, what yardage line are you shooting from, and do you shoot normally or are you an early or late shooter?
I saw Joe smoking clays Last night from 16 yards. He shoots FAST and I'd estimate no more than a total of 30 to 35 yards. I have also seen him at mid handicap smoke them at about the same distance from th trap house.
Larry
Well for arguments sake let's call it 33 yards then.
The ring is 65 MOA, so the trailing edge is roughly 33 MOA from the center dot.
That means at 100 yards the trailing edge would be roughly 33 inches. Since the distance being shot is one third of that, divide 33 inches by 3 and you get 11 inches.
That means Joe is putting a lead of 11 inches on the clay, though what we don't know is what station and what angle the clay was thrown at. If Joe can answer that it would be interesting to confirm a lead for that circumstance.
I see where you were going now BIO. Interesting the way you ciphered that.
It was on station 4 and the angle was what I would call a quarter angle about half way between a straight away and a hard right.
Still waiting to see the video of this gun in action.
I'll see what kind of video my iPhone will capture the next time I see Joe in action - perhaps Saturday morning?
Larry
That would be great Larry. See you then.
wish you the best joe
Joe built a gun like his for me. I use it as a training tool. One the extra weight helps conditioning. And using the holosight is helping me to become a 2 eyed shooter.
Phil Berkowitz
Great ideas there Phil. And thanks for all the good will and help, fellas.
Here's a picture of Phil's gun. It's basically the same except the stock adapter is from a different mfr.
Actually Phil, I built it for myself and then decided to sell it. You ended up being the buyer.
Joe
By the way guys the gun smashes targets as good as my Infinity when I do my thing. However; the Infinity is LM & this gun is full.
Phil Berkowitz
Thanks to Scott Calhoun, here's a video of the Kuhner shooting the Kuhner.
First view from the side.
Another side view.
Joe, watching the last video, do you see your hips pushing toward the target / front ? Wonder if that causes your gun to move up a tad ?
Gene Batchelar Wheaton, IL
Yep, noticed that. Will have to correct. Good catch.
I wish the videos weren't so narrow. The originals are much nicer although they are played on their sides by the Windows Media Player. Quick Time plays them upright with some great resolution.
And now some of you are probably beginning to understand the popularity of the AR15. Joe's 870 now has the same basic geometry on it.
How about the "eyecam" in a future episode?--Mike
Mike - Holographs don't photograph well. You're going to have to try it to see what it's like. Tomorrow?
I saw you had that Harlan hip thrust going on. Is it me or did you lift you head in your elbow view? Thanks for the videos it puts a little prospective to your project.
Looked at it in QuickTime and I think not. I think it's recoil action to the head. Could be tighter on stock though. I need a shorter neck.
I watched the vids several times. The forward body move at the lower hip area was to make the elevation move! Much better that than an arm upward thrust and an inherently more accurate move! Good job Joe!!
Hap
Thanks Hap. I value your input.
Doesn't seem to kick you too bad. Looks good! 1 oz?
A little more than 1-1/16 of an ounce of #6 steel shot.
Joe, food for thought....
This may allow some better fine tuning of your cheekweld, eye alignment, etc.
And if you REALLY want to get radical, replace the buffer tube with a standard rifle buffer tube, and install a Magpul PRS Precision Rifle Stock that is fully adjustable for length of pull and comb height. Drawback is it is much more expensive than the MOE stock.
Curious are you shooting one eyed or two eyes with the kuhner 2012?????
Joel
Two.
Barfin, thanks. Gunna check that buffer tube out.
Had one of those buffer tubes and sent it back. My pad is so low, the buffer tube just bound up and wouldn't slide. Doesn't mean it won't work for you. I also tried a stock made in Isreal that has a recoil spring in it. Here's a picture. It doesn't slide for me either. If anybody wants to try it, send me your mailing address and if it works, we'll settle up later.
The gun I sold to Phil B. has the high-tube adapter from Mesa. It worked well. Here's a picture of it. I wanted to turn the rail around and cut it off like in the Kuhner at the top of this thread. That would have given me a wider field of view, but after testing the gun myself, I didn't think it was worth the risk of bumping my nose. The basics are all there.
The reason for the high tube is to get the eye and scope above the bbl high enough for a clear view all the way down to the house. As a buddy of mine said, "That's cheating." The main plus is that my other eye doesn't try to help out, since the bbl is out of the way, so cross-firing is minimized to non-existent.
I appreciate the ideas. Keep 'em coming.
Brian - all I've had to do to get the gun to fit me is to move the pad down and twist it. The comb is perfect out of the box. Amazing.
Nice. I'm going to have to keep my eyes peeled for a good used 870.
Brian. Good used 870s are on GunBroker regularly. Bidding is kind of fun. Set your limit and go for it. I like the older ones without ribs.
Barfin - You can install the high-tube adapter securely without using the supplied rail, but how would you mount the scope? What have you got in mind to help you see when the gun is on the thing you're looking at? If you're going to use the bead or bbl, the low-tube option might be better.
Phil's gun has 6 different weight options going from least to greatest:
1) No added weight
2) The small copper tube on the right. It's filled with lead.
3) The steel bar on the bottom by itself
4) The long copper tube on top. It's filled with lead too.
5) The steel bar on bottom with the short copper tube
6) The two copper tubes
Notice the DeVault pad hardware fit to the gun and pad. That took a while. The only thing I don't like is the silver washer at the end of the rail. I bet it fell out.
Would love to see your work in pictures.
Very interesting. I guess that I no longer have to wonder what Joe Kuhn would do for a Klondike bar.
Barfin, the 590's all have cylinder bore barrels except for a handful made a few years ago with a mod barrel. There are no screw in choke tubes for them. Wish there were, because it would be fun to cause heart palpitations at the trap club with it. Hmmmm, maybe sporting clays....
The way things are going, anything with a pistol grip will be illegal!
"The way things are going, anything with a pistol grip will be illegal!"
Been warning PFS stock owners of that possibility for years.
I thought the 500 and 590 mag tubes were not interchangeable?
I've been looking for a gunsmith who can set up a 590A1 barrel for Mossberg choke tubes, or failing that, Rem chokes since I have piles of them.
It's possible the only difference is in the barrel retention system at the end of the tube, and the threads are the same.
The rear ring (barrel hanger) only serve to hold the rear of the bayonet and the swivel stud.
Brownells sells a stick on riser comb called a Scope-Eze. These come in straight and tapered models. A tapered model would probably work well on your 590 stock. At the very least it would be expedient while you had a more permanent solution made.
I'd like to try it. You won't be needing that bead. What's the reticle like?
