I was just handed a Dental estimtae for $25K to fix my teeth- I am in a state of shock.Medicare and the VA are out for me- no coverage.I'm in a bind.
I have heard that Los Algodones Mexico(Yuma Az.) is the place to go from the US to have major Dental work done- and you can save big $ doing so.
I would appreciate any advise and or experiance about having work done in Mexico. I really want to do my homework on this because I am very nervous about having my dental work done.
What do you have to have done?
I need several bridges and about 12+ teeth capped. My bite is screwed up because my front uppers and lowers are worn and need capping. It's a major deal.
Would you really seriously want that done in Mexico?? Seriously??
I know someone who had serious dental work done at a college of dentistry. The professor did the most intensive work and the cost was much more affordable.
-Gary
STAY OUT OF MEX. I have talked to dentists who have seen the Mex dental work and he could do little to nothing for the guy except pull their teeth and start over.
As Gary said above try the dental schools. They have been known to do the work for free and or very little cost. I have heard they do good work.
When we were younger, both my wife and I had dental work done in dental schools in the US. The work is very high quality and relatively inexpensive but takes much longer than a private dentist. After each step, the patient is examined by a professor before the student can go on to the next.
Senior, we will be glad to remove your teeth...............what happens next that is your problem? Buano dais
Many people go to Mexico to have dental work done. Lots of RV'ers stay in Yuma in the winter just for that reason.
Let me say up front that you may need the work your dentist has quoted, but the experiance that my wife and I have run into as of late from our dental office seems more like "churning" for business. Every time we get our teeth cleaned they press us to have our old fillings removed and new ones installed.
A second opinion from a fellow shooter who is an periadontis, told me do not have it done. Removing fillings that are good to place new ones in requires removal of additional tooth material and can lead to more complications in the future.
GET A SECOND OPINION!!
I can personally vouch for the Dental work thats done in Algadones and have two very accomplished Dentist that I use and have refered many people to and never had a problem ... If you are serious PM me and I will give you any and all of the information you would need ... The people who have never been there are the first to tell you how bad it is, and the Dental Schools are the worst place to get work done even though it is checked by the Professional its done by the students in all cases ... I know about the schools having been there and done that ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
Hi,
I've been to Dental Bernal in Los Algodones four times for LOTS of work...extractions, mini-sinus lift, implants, root canal, crowns...I figure just under $100,000 for about $10,000...and that includes airfare, rental car, and hotel!
Any work that can't be done in Dr. Bernal's office? He brings in an expert -- once for the sinus boost and once for the root canal.
If you'd like to read the 30-page journal from my first trip (2006), please email me.

I and my wife both have had Dental work done in Mexico. We stayed at Double Adobe for four years and lot of the campers used the services their. WE went accros the border at Nacho and went to a very nice Dental Clinic. We both had our teeth cleaned for a cost of arround 50.00 . Just before we left for home in 2010 my wife broke a tooth. We called and were able to get in right away. She had the tooth reconstructed and a temp crown. We also both had our teeth cleaned. Total bill for both 146.00.. The office had all the modern equipment.. The temp crown is working just fine still.. Al Brackett
Why not Mexico? That's where my Wife had her vasectomy performed.
Tron,
They do vasectomy's out patient in most places while you wait for your glasses to be made ... The you can go around the corner and try it out for a nominal fee ...
I had 2 dentist in Phoenix botch the job at hand and was directed to Mexico by a close friend for the initial problem ... Had a tooth ache second to none, went to Midwest Dental School in Glendale, Az and they actually did more harm than good, besides taking almost 7 hours to do a root canal, had that mess straightened out in Mexico for less that what the School was going to charge for the crown ... I did have to get a Bridge and an implant because of the shoddy work at the Midwest Dental School that was checked by the Professional Dentist that was teaching the classes ... I have refered more than a Dozen people to the Clinics that I have used and there has not been one problem ... I was there as late as last week with my cousin, 3 crowns and a bridge, antibiotics and pain meds included for $810.00 ... We had to stay over night at the casino down the road because it was to late in the day to have the bridge made up on the same day ... Do not try to go in the winter time because the wait to get back into the states at the border is about 3 to 4 hours because of all of the snow birds ... They also adjust their prices down if you go in the summer time because business gets slow without all of the Winter visitors going there to get medical attention, dental work, glasses, etc ... I will not send anyone to a place where I have not been myself ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
I met people from all over the US of all economic means in Argentina having dental work done.
Sounds like some Broker going to rip you off for a fee in Az
In Argentina you deal directly with the clinic- no middle man apparently
Regards from Iowa
Gene
Some of the Cartels in Mexico will remove your teeth for free. The only problem is they will also remove your head first.
You beat me to it oldgahchamp, lol The only thing I could add is there is no charge for services rendered.
check out : www.washingtondentalclinics.com. They are a bigtime operation with many clinics. My cousin lives in Jaurez,MX, says the one there is great!
So let me see if I understand.... The very same group who would rather die than buy Japanese, Chinese, or other foreign commodity finds it perfectly fine to purchase services from Mexico?
Double standard, hypocritical, or most likely--all the rhetoric about buying American is just that.
Guy Babin - Fillings made in America, wife intact, and rather fond of Fish Tacos.
so let me see if i understand... i have four dentists doing my yard work?
All of these staunch Republican conservatives going to Mexico to stimulate their economy. Maybe even some of them are current or former union workers. Obama is proud of you.
Thanks for info and appreciate your help- the jokes are good too! Please provide any insight you can.
I just hope that some day you aren't faced w/ a Bill of $30,000 for dental work and your wonderful insurance pays $1500!FYI,Most Dentists charge 12% interest on outstanding amounts.
My thinking right now is that if the Dentists were butchers, their entire operations would be out of business within a year because of the word of mouth. It looks like their business is expanding- wonder why, maybe more baby boomers on fixed income needing affordable dental work?
DoubleAuto-I haven't received my Obama or Union cashiers check yet- i keep checking the mailbox. I'm guessing it's getting delivered to some other mailbox! If it doesn't show up soon, then I might have to pay my own bills-damn!
I live in the area and know many people who have had dental work in Algodones and Mexicali. There are some good dentists and some really bad dentists. If you know an American that can refer you to a good dentist I wouldn't be worried.I had lasic surgery in Mexicali aabout 10 years ago and it turned out fine.I saved about $3000.But I knew 2 Americans that had it done at that Dr.

Get another estimate in the USA and tell them beforehand that you can't afford anything over ($$$$) There are stopgap restorations that can be done instead of crowns everywhere(which don't last forever). Having that much work done in a country with no guarantees can be a bad investment. Buying the total package in the USA could likewise be the same. Your mouth, your choice. Mike B (retired dentist)
The American Dentists love the people who won't go to Mexico for dental work, almost as much as the Mexican Dentists who live in and went to school in the States do ... Same results, a lot less money ... The labs in Mexico send dentures to the Dentists in America via over night express, I got to see some of the invoices and ironically one of them was from my former Dentist in Glendale ... They get them and mark them way up (they get them in Mexico for $500 and you pay them $4,500.00) for all of those who won't take a day trip to Mexico ... I drive an Isuzu, Hyundai, 1967 Plymouth and 2011 Dodge Challenger (mostly made in Canada ) and get all of my dental work done in Los Algadones, Mexico B.C. and they speak english also ... There is not any broker involved as Gene seems to think and stated above ... The hygenist and a few others who work for the local Dentists go to Mexico to save a lot of money also ... The local Dentist would probably go if he could get away from all of the people handing him their money ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
YES, Yes and Yes. We go to Ixtapa Mexico every winter which is way down in the country. For 15 years we know many people who have had great Dental Care there. Get a referal is right. My wife has finally got good dental Ins. I was worked up yesterday for replacement of my two front caps,if the Ins denies I will have it done in Mexico and instead of paying about $1,000 a tooth I will pay $300....
GS
Ive got implants, went to dental school in S Florida, sorry, we dont work on implants, couldnt believe it. India, Mexico,Texas Argentina almost half the price I get here in S Fl.
I didn't read all of the responses, but first off, is this a dentist that you have been to in the past and trust? I had a very bad experience with a shiester dentist. After years of seeing a family friend dentist he retired. The wife, myself and two kids went looking for a new dentist. Picked some schmuck on the insurance plan. The first meeting seemed all wrong from the start, but then this dick head began to tell us that we all needed major dental work (many thousands of dollars). The wife was in tears. We imediatly went to see a different dentist. He called bull shit. Said we all looked like we had done well with tooth care, and I have never heard diffently again from other dentists when we moved. Mostly compliments on the past work we had done. Yes, I did report the jerk to the insurance company.
My point. Get another opinion, even if you know you need some work. All professions have quacks, but it appears dentistry has some shady folks.
There was a news program about quack dentist 10 or so years agon.
Mexico? Not on your life. It might mean your life. Peter
Borg-Peter-Please
You have no clue and you should not speak about something you have no clue about. In the 15 years I have traveled to Mexico, I have had no problems and I know many people that live there and have no problems. My wife works in the same county as Flint MI. You should really 1. Beleive NOTHING of what you read and HALF of what you see...you WILL be better served!!!!
GS
Many retirees around Tucson and Green Valley head to Nogales, Sonora just across from Nogales AZ for dental work. I haven't but have 4 friends who do. Their experience has been good.
You can park on the US side and walk over. Some dentists will send a van to pick you up / drop you off at the port of entry. Bring your passport.
Midalake, and others, Opinions were requested. This is mine.
No, I have not been to mexico for any medical work. I know folks who have been in mexico when injured. The care was not good and had to be corrected when they got back to the states. I appreciate looking for a good deal. I am a capitalist, so I am looking to make as much money as I can and spend as little as I can on any service or product. Perhaps the dentists in mexico are top knotch.
My main point was to get a second opinion first. As I said, I have experienced what I considered to be a near criminal dentist here in the states. At least in the states if something goes wrong you have some sort of recourse. Good luck with that south of the boarder.
And again, this is MY opinion which is what was asked for. I did not harp on the opinions of others. Don't get so butt hurt. Peter
I personally know dozens of people besides myself who have had dental work done in Mexico (Los Algadones Mexico B.C.) , they must of all just got lucky and not had any problems ... I have had a lot of problems with dentists in the States and none in Mexico, must of just got lucky also, I guess ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
One of my patients goes down to Algodones every year. They go to a female dentist that went to USC. They love the work that is done. Tim
oh, good idea. Get your eyes lasered there while you are at it.
Be sure that you have a current passport in your posession before venturing acroos the border.
Clyde
Thanks for all the input!!!
I am going to get a 2nd 0pinion locally 1st to see what my dental options are and I have several excellent contacts to research that came from this board and others.I still appreciate any other input/leads that you might have.
I will give an up date later. I have never thought about having major Dental work done but you never think about aging either until it happens. The big surprise to was that insurnace,Medicare, or the VA will not cover the expense.I'm not sure what people do when they hit the fall of their life and need major Dental care-it's damn expensive! I'm not complaining, just didn't see it coming!
I know more than a dozen people and their family's who choose to go to Mexico for dental work and not one of them have ever voiced a problem that I personally know of ... They must of all just got lucky and not had any of the so called problems that the American Dentists will tell you about, which makes sense if you think about it because its their business heading south ... There is a lab in Algadones that over nights Mexican made dentures back to the states for the American dentists to mark up and make a killing on ... I have been there many, many times and have not been stopped or shot at by any of the Drug Cartels ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
