Need to buy new washer and dryer. May I ask for advice, suggestions and/or warnings regarding major brands?
They are pretty much all made in the same factory anymore. We bought a Whirlpool Duet Steam front load washer two years ago and have had absolutely no problems at all. In fact I don't think our clothes have ever been so clean and with a fraction of the water and detergent. We are about ready to upgrade our gas dryer. I suppose we will stick with Whirlpool.
They are all junk
Toploaders best.
We bought a top loader hi efficiency washer. Like gentian says the clothes are cleaner with less soap and the spin speed is faster so the dryer doesn't use as much energy.
As far as brand most are made by the same manufacturer.
Bill
I recently read a very positive article about STABER. They build a high quality top loading machine and it's... brace yourself... MADE IN THE USA!!!
They cost a little more but can save hundreds of dollars per year because they operate more efficiently.
Hit the link.

We bought the Sears Kenmore 90 series top loader washer a gas dryer.
Washer had fill valve hose come off after about 10 years and flooded the wash room and ran out the front of the house through the garage. What a poor design. No clamp or barbs to hold the hose on. Googled it and was an easy fix. I then put a bread tie around it to help hold.Ray
Came back to edit 6-16 to say I did replace a thermal fuse in the dryer in September of 2010. I got three on the web for less than half of what they wanted for one at the store. Ray
bread tie.......................High level American Technology.
works for me.
I'm a Whirlpool guy, I buy the cheapest "heavy duty" model. The only thing that breaks is a Lovejoy-type nylon coupling between the motor and the guts. Easy fix, the cabinet lifts right off and it takes about 4 minutes.
Did it 2 times in 15 years on 2 washers. Same dryer still going.
HM
We bought a Sears 70 series quite a few years ago and a matching sears dryer. Had to replace the water fill valve about 3 years ago. Other than that they have just been chugging away two loads a week with no problems.

SEARS SELLS 50% OF ALL APPLIANCES SOLD. Does that tell you anything?
I've bought my last North American made piece of crap. Bought Matag top end stuff for the last 30 years and as mentioned above they are all now made by the same company. 30 years ago they were great machines ... but now the Matag repair man is a busy guy. I bought 5 new appliances when we moved just over 4 years ago. I've spent money on 3 of the 5 in less than 4 years. I also hear the LG stuff is not lasting either.
I heard the Bosch stuff is very good, but one has to wonder if the Harvard Business School model is creeping into the mess in Europe as well. Bill Malcolm
Sears Kenmore has been manufactured by Whirlpool in Benton Harbor, MI. Since K-Mart now owns Sears I would go with a Whirlpool before the Kenmore.
I seriously doubt that Sears sells anywhere near 50% of all appliances. Maybe that was true 30 years ago but not today.
I am still trying to get the store to take back my new Cabrio washer by Whirlpool. I would advise not buying any "High efficiency" and buy a top of the line old style. This is a piece of junk with far to many things wrong with the design to list. One of the factory service guys fully agreed with me, saying the only reason he keeps his is because he acquired it for free. This statement was from a service rep!

I always wonder how you can add clothing to a front-loader once you begin the cycle--wouldn't water go all over the floor? And also you are supposed to keep the doors ajar to prevent that sour smell--how can you do that in a tight laundry room with a door to the garage? They seem very impractical and terribly over-priced. Just another yuppie toy. I will stick with Whirlpool top-loaders which I have used for over 40 years with no major repairs. David's mom
"yuppie toy"....?? That's funny. I bet if you knew my family you would think quite the opposite of yuppies. Maybe rednecks. Anyway, haven't they been using front load washing machines in the laundry mats for over 50 years? I guess if you have a dinky laundry room that also acts as a hallway a front load would not be very practical at all. We do leave the door open and did with our top load washer we had before. As for adding clothes once the cycle has started, you simply press pause and wait for the door to unlock(that long 5 seconds) and add your item. No water on the floor. It doesn't fill the tub completely and doesn't need too. We probably have at least one load going every other day. The front load washers are just a spin(pun intended) on old technology.
As for the HE part, since getting this washer our water bill has decreased a noticeable amount and we use far less detergent. The clothes are absolutely cleaner feeling and smelling. The steam option is great for towels and those hard to get out stains you get with farm work. Of course, there are top load HE washers as well. Great technology if you ask me.
I guess they are not for everyone. That's why they still make both.

Just watch the new HE stuff run , stopping and reversing so many multiple times you will stop counting.Cant last like the old style. Kenmore here 25 years plus. Jeff

We hate our Maytag HE Centennial. You can't let it fill while you're putting detergent and clothes in and it's a pain to add clothes after it starts. There is no way the clothes are getting properly clean and rinsed in that tiny amount of water (just try that with your hair or your hands). We second rinse everything now. We're selling our house and moving soon and the washer stays even though it's only a year old. Nothing but regular old washing machines from now on and since the same manufacturer makes most brands only the size and price with be a factor, the bigger and cheaper the better.
We bought a Whirlpool front loader set in 2006.....zero problems....
Sears is still the largest retailer and servicer of " White Goods" their kenmore brand is made by Whirlpool which owns Maytag. I know thiis because my wife works in the industry and has for many years at the mmanufacturing end of the business. The front loading units are a bit more costly but they save water and detergent so you get your money back over time. Product qualitiy has becaome a priority for the US companies when LG invaded the market.
Bruce may I ask what kind of washer and dryer you have? JM
We have LG Front Load Washer and Dryer for 2 years. Never a problem and wife loves them. Daughter has had a set for four years and never a problem.
Whirlpool front loader that we bought at Sears ( last years modle) my wifes choice.
So because you have one and it's lasted 10 years it's the best on the market?? Come on, explain how it's best. This I gotta hear.
Always had Kenmore everything...including in the kitchen...never any but a couple very minor issues and Sears service people are awesome...we are biased as my grandmother worked for Sears Roebuck in the credit dept since after I was born in '60 ...she got Xmas cards till she passed from many grateful families who were given their first ever credit acct when they were just starting out..she was an awesome judge of integrity and character and the company kept most of those families and their next generations as customers for life
A friend of mine retired from Whirlpool some years ago and he was talking about dryer production being about 6000 units a day.
I said, you mean 600 units a day, no, he said 6000, and Sears takes most of the production. He said that didn't count washers and dishwashers.... WOW.
Don't know what it is today, but that would certainly make them a major manufacturer.
Regards....Gerald
Electrolux washer and dryer. 100% satisfied.
Adios, Dirk
Have top of the line front load Bosch washer and dryer. Daughter has the same machines as does her mother-in-law. Quiet, gets clothes clean and no mold or moldy smell. No problems to date. And your clothes really smell great if you use Gain detergent.
bought one from previous 3 owners, still works good..
they don't build them this way anymore..
A fine looking machine for sure BigM
Who out thier is satified with HE models or think they work better than the old style? I noticed above the ones that are liked do not mention if they are H/E or old style.
CM
We have HE as well as our daughter (Front Loads) and love them with no problems. Work well and get the clothes clean.
My Whirlpool mentioned above is HE. I'm almost positive any of the newer front load machines are HE. I'm also pretty sure a large portion of the modern top loads are HE as well. They clean your clothes a whole lot better and with less detergent and water to boot. How it works, I have no idea. It does though. Some people are just against change.
How many bucked the first electric washer and dryers saying they didn't work as well and wouldn't get your clothes as clean?
grntitan : The problem must be it is a top loader. If you could see what this thing does you would agree that this model was designed by idiots. Twist the cloths in one big ball, 8 out of ten times I have to stop the spin cycle and even them out, does not rinse all the soap out, tears up wife's delicate shirts. It has a glass top so I can watch the 40 minute cycle, the entire cycle none of the cloths on the outside at the beginning of the cycle ever, not one made it to the middle. The center ones get beat up.
Not against change, this is a piece of junk, that is why I bought it thinking it was going to be great! I am selling it on Craigs list for 400 less than I paid for it.
CM
CM,
That don't sound good. We haven't experienced any of those issues. I don't blame you for wanting rid of it. Ours has a lot of settings including the speed at which it spins and the amount of rinse is also adjustable. It took some getting use to and some experimenting to see what cycles work best for the items you are washing. I made the mistake the first few times of adding the same amount of soap our old machine used. We did have to run a separate rinse cycle to get rid of the excess soap. The HE soap is super concentrate. I quickly learned to follow the directions of the machine and not what I had I always done in the past.
The only complaint I have and it is a minor one, is the cycles are generally a lot longer than conventional machines. There is a quick wash though if an item needed done fast.
I pretty much stay away from the laundry anyway. I don't do good separating colors and that drives the wife nuts.
Our Bosch washer and dryer are HE.
I 100% agree with knobcreek. A year ago we also purchased a Maytag HE Centennial. You have to be a Philadelphia lawyer just to figure out what wash cycle to use. It does not use enough water, sometimes leaving soap scum on the clothes and then we have to re rinse and spin which is a pain in the arse, as well as time consuming.
It also takes to long for each wash cycle. If I could afford to purchase another washer I would go to a store that has a basic older model machine without all the bells and whistles. Your clothes will be cleaner, and will take less time to wash. Take what I say to the bank and you will be much happier. Styeve Balistreri
Still have my Whirlpool Supreme gas dryer I purchased in 1980. Runs great! Newer isn't necessarily better.
My sister is the type of homemaker who likes to get the latest things when they come out. About seven or eight years ago when the new HE machines were getting popular she bought a maroon front loader LG washer and dryer set from one of the big box retailers. Of course they wanted to charge her to haul off her perfectly good Maytags, so the call came to me to move the old ones out for her. I loaded them up on my trailer and since the scrap metal price was down a bit at that time, left them sit on the trailer back in our pine trees.
A couple months later at Thanksgiving she was telling us how much trouble she had getting clothes clean and the mildew smell of the new washer. Along with that the heating element had gone out of the dryer and it took two weeks to get the parts. When I told her she could have her Maytags back if she wanted, she was thrilled. The LG's went on Craigslist, and my Xmas present to her was moving back in her Maytags.
Whirlpool 3.4 cu ft Top-Load Washer (Color: White) Model #: WTW4800XQ
Definitely NOT this one. Unless you like/dislike cats. When in the wash cycle, it sounds like a cat is caught in the the motor/transmission (even with the laundry room door closed). And asking for a replacement will not improve matters (same noise). It's also extremely slow to do a load of clothes. It actually spends 4-5 minutes trying to determine if the load you put in it is balanced BEFORE it even begins washing! What in the world difference could that make? If it doesn't like the balance, it stops working and waits for you to show up and correct it, then it goes through the balance check again. If you don't get back to fix it in time, guess what? It shuts off entirely.
This is Whirlpool's current basic top loader, center agitator model. It's the first appliance that I ever purchased an extended warranty on. After hearing it run I knew it would likely be a bargain.
With all of the fancy model names these days, they should have named this one the "POS".
Top of the line Kenmore Elite HE set here. Big bucks, wife really thought she wanted it. Big mistake. Stuff not as clean unless you add presoak cycle. Needs special soap. Soap does not rinse out unless using 2nd rinse. With these optional cycles, each load takes 75 minutes. Once a month you have to run the washer without clothes and special cleaner to get the mildew smell out. The first time this over priced piece of crap quits working it is going out to the curb. I will be glad to pay for 4 extra gallons of water per load. The dryer seems fine, but who needs 35 buttons and sixteen lights. The replacement will have a single knob.
