Our club used to sell reclaimed shot for $25 a bag but that has been all sold. They are now selling new shot for $43 a bag. I've only been shooting for about 3 years and I've seen the price of new shot go from about $28 to $43 a bag.
How much was a 25 lb bag of new shot: (1) 5 years ago - 2007; (2) 10 years ago - 2002; (3) 20 years ago - 1992?
Will prices come down to the mid $20 range again?
Here is what my notebook tells me: 06 $19.50 08 $29.99 11 $35.99 12 $34.99
Glenns, are you in WA State???
You're getting ripped off at $43.00 a bag. Today the spot price on lead is .85 a pound. HMB
I just paid $33 a bag for new Eagle brand at Biekirks in Rochester 2 weeks ago.
Jerry Lewis
$34.50 for 10 bags or more Mason ,Michigan 2 weeks ago,Mag. shot
Gamaliel's had Lawerence shot for $39.50/bag at the US Open this weekend. Ouch!!!!
Yes - I'm in WA state.
The PITA grand is coming uP next month they will have good prices on shot there.
Bill
I remember buying Winchester shot in 1960 for $5.00 per bag 25lb
How much for an Ithaca $$$$ grade in 1960??????
pita should have good prices h**l,its gettin like gas...when we think 3.69/gal is a deal....if it wasnt for my shotmaker & a decent supply of lead,i wouldnt be thinking about shooting..if you dont make your own,buy as mutch of the re-claim as you can.the dumos master plan about the 2nd amendment is coming full circle(or at least half to three quarter)..cant take their guns, lets go after their ammo.....mark jones
Jim, In 1960 it would still have been a $2500 grade and the price was $3000.00 according to Frank Conley's book. :) See you at the GLG. Bill
Spot pricing means nothing if you are a volume producer, futures are how you cover yourself if possible. Raw materials are just one element of finished goods and costs are rising. I paid $38.00 a bag last week in SoCal and was told to expect $41.00 this week and may go higher in weeks to come.
It seems a number of you are enterprising in your quest to keep your shooting costs in check by shooting reclaim or smelting scrap into new home made shot. These approaches may be necessary for many more of us as costs continue to escalate.
Like it or not, we're in a global market and are no longer in the cat bird seat controlling commoditiy prices as in the past, get use to it, this is the future.
Surfer
Surfer, The cost of lead has been dropping, not rising. The cost of shot should follow suit. HMB
I paid $44 a bag in Atlanta two weeks ago.... :-(Rocky

Back in the 60's nobody talked about the price of shot and everyone wanted a Ponsness/Warren reloader.

HMB, How long do you think it will take to move higher priced lead stockpiled in the global system before the lower cost product comes into play???
The metals market has been swinging wildly to and fro for over a decade, even with blended margins prices won't telegraph to greatly reduced retail pricing.
Surfer
One of the things, so I understand, is a number of reactors are being built in China. Hence the need for lead.
Surfer, That " higher priced lead stockpiled in the global system" is only worth what it is worth today. If a seller paid more than it's worth today, he can eat it or sit on it.
MDMike, reactor shields are concrete and water. They may use lead where people work though, but being China ......
Asia has an insatiable appetite for vehicle batteries.
vdt, was that price from Brenner up in Mason ?
Mike, This is where blended margins come into play, combining high and low costs to meet target pricing while maintaining minimum profit margins. In today's ever changing market, it may be a better payoff to sit on the high price goods selling the lower cost items until the market takes an upswing.
Different companies have different formulas and strategies to meet their minimum margins while maintaining a competitive stance. Small smelters don't buy at the same level as a large volume battery company as an example, it's not a level playing field. I would be foolish if I thought a small market as the shot market would earn the best raw matarial costs which equates to the price I pay.

Somewhere in my junk collection I still have a Remington Shot Bag with the price written upon it...$3.75.. Yes, that was a long time ago but it brings back memories of a different time. I can still remember a Sunday AM league that gave you a box of reloads, a round of trap, hot dogs & beer for seventy-five cents a round. If I remember correctly, it was 1956 or '57 sponsered by one of the local social clubs. Damn, I'm getting old!
Big Jack
I called the warehouse and they wouldn't come down one penny even if I ordered 3 tons of shot. 33.75 per bag. They even added that the price will be going up this summer. I felt I was being BSed.
maybe not. call robyn richardson at mayco. she's great. she'll explain how the producers are at the mercy of the miners as no producer operates a mine. plus, most lead is imported into the USA via freighters! consider those logistics. as well as 95+ percent of the lead market is tied up in car batteries. give her a call and update us. it'll be an enlightening conversation
Chocolate bars used to be 10 cents too.
Shot will never drop to the $20/bag range. If you want to save money look at shell buys on promotional loads at about $50/case. If you do not shoot a lot, buy AA's and Federal's and claim the $20/case rebate. Get a few friends a relatives to send the $100 to. Then sell the hulls.
Our dollars may be worthless the way things are going, so invest in lead. If the price goes up, sell it, and all your guns, and brag about how smart you are. If is stays in the .30's shoot it up and have fun. Your money is making less than 1% with the banking bastards.
You could wait for it to drop below $30 and stay home too.
So many choices!!!
Don
Europe can't even buy a lead sinker let alone shot for recreation. Their is no place in this world right now that has much demand for lead. The hole damn globe is in shit and your telling me price is due to demand. Bull crap. Lead has been stockpiled for the last 5yrs and when you hear of gamallies or any of the other big box stores selling shot for less than 40.00 something is up. Lead is controlled just like oil. Lets see anyone go to the oil drilles and say Hey I would like to buy 500000 gal. of oil. They will tell you the can't sell it to you because the are contract to someone else. Try and go by a battery from a manufacture and find out they won't sell you one. Hell I found the company that makes the hydrolic rod on the mec loader and they would not sell to me. Said I had to go thru Mec. Same goes with the lead. Untill the middle man is shitcanned we will aways be at the mercy of greed. Wild bill
When I first started shooting, new shells were $2.65 a box and you could reload for half of that amount which I did. A round of trap was $1.50. I shot on average 1,000 targets per week.
My first BT99 new was $258.50 and shortly after my first and only Perazzi was a comp one for $600.00. I had my choice of a P or K gun for the same amount. Steve Balistreri
We're looking at $35 for Lawrence Magnum #8's here. -Aaron Schneider
I still fondly remember the deals I used to get at Gander Mountain when I worked there part-time for the employee discount. That was just a few (10 or so) years ago. AA's and STS were $4.99/box or 10% off by the flat ($45). We normally got 20% off, but 3 times a year we'd get an additional 10% off on "employee night". I bought a lot of flats for $32.40 each, and if there was a coupon in the paper for 50 cents off per box from another store, we got that too! I would always look for the black flats (old-style hulls) which loaded better than the white flat HS shells, but it was hardly worth reloading when you could buy flats of old-style AA's for $27.40 per flat plus 6% tax! ....Rick
Steve, And the year was???
Jim Skeel
Could someone post Brenners prices at the Ohio State Shoot? Thanks!!!!!
Eagle was $32.99 at the PA shoot yesterday
