Photobucket Here are four photos showing a Custom Ruger 10/22 our local high school trap team is gong to raffle off. I developed this stock in 3d cad with some help from a couple of friends, carved it on my cnc, and just got the basic finish on it. Still needs wet sanded and polished, as well as checkering. The action will be made black to match the blue octagonal barrel and the Tony Kidd Trigger group. The stock is made from Western Big Leaf Maple from Cecil Fredi in Las Vegas.

Once completed we would like to come back and offer some tickets here.

A couple of suggestions. If you're using a stock 10-22 action use other Kidd parts such as his bolt and other internals to complement the trigger - it will make a big difference in both functioning and accuracy. Kidd makes 2 types of triggers - a 2-stage target trigger and a great single-stage trigger --- the single-stage is much more versatile.

You might also want to attach a permanent Picitinny mount to make mounting a scope easier.

Looks like a great project and I'd like to buy some tickets - good luck.

Hey thanks for all the comments. I finally made it back from the funeral. I have never been involved in a raffle like this, and actually, I will not be involved in the actual raffle, but our team has never done anything like this. I am going to need some help, suggestions etc. We are going to offer 1000 tickets at $20 per ticket. The funds will be handled through our school in a special fund set aside for the trap team.

I want to have this ready to start the selling of tickets in a month if the checkerer er er can work it in. Do most people who do this kind of raffle use standard roll tickets, with matching numbers, or do they print their own tickets on sheets? Who is allowed to purchase tickets and who is excluded from purchasing?

I am asking from lack of experience.

Dang $20,000 raised on a $1000(being generous) gun?? Makes all of our fund raisers seem like child's play. 1000 tickets is awful watered down in my opinion.

grntitan "Dang $20,000 raised on a $1000 (being generous) gun" you obviously have never bought a Kidd Trigger for a 10/22, or a piece of highly figured maple and paid to have that turned into a custom stock. How in the world did you come up with the generous price of $1000. The reciever still has to be blacked, new bases with quick detach rings and hopefully a scope to match. This will be a significantly expensive 10/22 when finished. I have all the reciepts for the project less the labor in the stock and what the checkering will cost, but let me lay it out for you.

Cost of the Ruger $180, cost of barrel $200 with shipping, cost of the Kidd $230, cost of the piece of wood $350 with shipping and checkering will be approx $350 plus shipping both ways. That comes to a little over $1300 with no labor for the stock. Is the stock work any less valuable for a rimfire stock that it is for a shotgun stock just because of the cost of the gun? Isn't craftsmanship after all is said and done, craftsmanship?

Now with that said, I did not come on here to start a pissing match and offered up the fact I was ignorant to these raffles, including the fact I wanted to make sure everything was done with proper safeguards in place so there would be no question of honesty.

I have no problem with you, RickN or anyone for that matter telling me what I need to do to make this a fair and equitable raffle, how to set it up or to have it run, since I will not be involved, but please don't belittle the value of the rifle just because it is not a high grade shotgun.

What would be a fair and equitable price per ticket, total number of tickets for a package deal that will be finaled around the $2500 mark including a name brand scope of something in the 2X7X30 range? I came here asking for advice and that has not changed.

In your 2nd post you did ask what we think. If you were not prepared for the truth you shouldn't have asked. That said I may have been a little off on my estimate and it did come off as if i was belittling such a fine gun. I do see you have put quite a lot of work and mobey in tgat gun. I didnt think you would be so offended but even given a $2500 10/22 you can't expect to raise $20,000 on it. People will see $20 per ticket and a 1000 of them being sold and walk away. The odds need to be better so they feel they have a chance. As Rick stated, look to double and maximum maybe triple your investment. It can't appear someone is getting rich on the deal. Our High School Trap team fund raisers are a huge success when we net $1000-$2000. We are not looking to buy everyone new guns.

I am quite familiar with Ruger 10/22's as I own two of them. I think the idea for raffling this highly modded rifle is a great idea. Guns always raffle good around here and we have done several bone stock factory shotguns but our profit was small. Good luck with your team and raffle. I did not respond here to start a confrontation. If that is what it appeared, I apologize.

P.S. I did assume the stock was being donated. Often times fund raisers especially for the youth revolve around a certain amount of donated items and services. Never tried it with our team but perhaps the profit margin could have been better if a local stock maker could have been cohearsed into donating a stock.

grtitan,

Thank you for your input. The candor about cost of tickets and number of tickets, did not bother me. Honestly I assumed, and you know what that makes me! I assumed you were belittling the gun because it was a 10/22 and for that, I apologize to you.

I do want input as I want this to be a fair and equitable fundraiser for our trap team. Btw, I am the local stock maker ;) but I am also one of the coaches for this team, and have given thousands over the last 5 years. I shut my business down 4 years ago to take care of my dying wife and am just now getting it started again. I was ask by the head coach to come up with a fund raising idea and I planned this well over a year ago, but told him due to my limited funds and needing to start back to work that I would need to be re imburse for the rifle. I have fronted all the cost of this as well as spending hundreds of hrs perfecting the 3d model that this was carved from. Hopefully I will recoup that cost over time with a few of these high grade stocks.

All of our students have to furnish their own guns as well as some of their ammo. We have 50 shooters this year and it takes a small fortune to feed the thrower as well as the team supplied ammo. I assure you I do not want us to come off as greedy or trying to pull some sort of scam, therefore, my questions here.

I have already have committments for 15 tickets at the $20 price by just showing the rough carved stock and I know that is a long way away from 1000 tickets, but......

What about the propriety of parents of the students purchasing tickets? When I tell you I am green at this, I mean it. Your input is appreciated and if I came off as defensive, you now know why. Sorry for that.

I wouldn't worry about who buys the tickets as long as everything is cut and dry ahead of time as far as the rules go. It's important they know how many tickets are being sold and when the drawing is. We have had a shooters parents of our HS team(I help coach) win a big raffle. I never heard anyone complain but I'm sure someone did. They won fair and square.

As well as helping coach the team I also have a son on the team. I know what it's like supplying guns and ammo. We always try and use our fund raiser money for entry fees and team shirts as well as ammo from time to time. It's just not a cheap sport and not for everyone.

I am far from the expert on fund raisers but as I stated above, just be sure all the important info is there for all to see. Perhaps you may want to look at maybe a max of 200 tickets sold. That would be $4000. I don't think the price of the tickets is too high, just the amount of tickets to be sold. I'm just afraid if you get too many more than that it will turn people away and could take too long to sell. People don't like to wait forever to at least hear who won. Our head coach is a FFL. We raffle field shotguns and generally look to make just a $500 off them. We can do that several times a year and more people win that way. We only have 2 to 3 squads of kids though. With 15 kids, that $500 goes a lot further than a team with 50 kids.

I remember a school that raffled off 3 or 4 long guns. I think the High school was in N.C. The raffle was for the FFA.(Future Farmers of America). Tom Brokaw got wind of the school having a firearm raffle. This was just after the shooting in Columbine High School. He went off saying how dare they have a raffle like this. The school would raise about I think they said $4 to $6,000 for one raffle. After this hit the news it made over $20,000. Thanks Tom for putting out the word. LOL. Shooter called the H.S and asked what was the address so they could send money for the raffle.

$20.00 per ticket maybe a little high for somethings but that gun is not a cheap item. Go price what it would cost just to get the parts for the gun then to put it together. Its for the kids and I don't have a problem with that.

Right now I have donated an items for the State Youth Trap Team that will be over $40.00. Thats item, time and a box that I will have to make for the auction. The way I look at it is FINE. Its for the kids.

I'm doing the same for the St Judes shoot. I again don't mind, its for the kids of the St Judes Hospital. Each year I donate an item and or something I made for the kids.

All in all to those people who think the tickets are high, by saying so is just like going out and kicking the kids hard in their back side. Cold.

I like the idea of comparing patient's at St Jude's Hospital for Children to healthy high-school kids who want to participate in a sport than neither they nor their parent's can afford and who probably have little chance of continuing after high-school -- that really is six of one and half-dozen on another.

I like shotgun sports but they are expensive. Have you thought of starting a .22lr league based on the Ruger RimFire model - teaches all the values of gun handling at less than a tenth of the costs and it would probably be more fun for kids that shooting trap.

Just call me an old curmudgeon.

And if you think the gun, when finished, with a nice scope etc will be worth $2,500 take a look at one guns like this sell for on GunBroker.com or the classified secton of RimfireCentral.com. Putting a very nice piece of wood on a rifle that isn't 100% custom doesn't add as much as you might think.

I think it's sweet! I always liked Maplew for gunstocks. I have a .257 Ackley Imp. that looks similar. A huge pat on the back to you. It takes a ton of talent to write a CNC program in 3D lot alone executing it. Who and when to contact for a few tickets?

Make sure you cover all your bases with the rules. If you sell tickets out of state, who pays the shipping and FFL fees to get the gun to the winner? Will the drawing be held on a specific date reguardless of how many tickets get sold, or will it be raffled off only if a set amount of tickets are all purchased? Make sure ticket purchasers meet legal requirements for owning a firearm. Check on legal issues of conducting an interstate raffle. I'd consider a ticket if the odds were better (maybe sell 500 tickets max) and if you iron out the details.

"Just call me an old curmudgeon." Ok Bill, you ask....you are an old curmudgeon! ;) Now don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with old curmudgeons, its just that they are.....well, curmudgeons.

Bill this team competes with the AYSSP in Arkansas, which is sponsored in part by the Arkansas Game and Fish. This is the 6th year with 5600 students shooting this year, and over 600 coaches. It is shot using ATA rules but not associated with the ATA other than sending several youth shooters to the AIM and SCTP programs each year after our short season is through. One of the students that shot with the AYSSP just won a bronze medal in London. We have sent several shooters to the USA Shooting development team and hope to send many more over the years. There have been over 18,000 shooters go through this program without a single accident.

You are right that most of these kids will not continue shooting trap, but that doesn't keep us from helping them learn gun safty, sportsmanship, team work etc.

Typically the guns on gunbroker are used guns and not new. If you want to go back to the top you will find where I listed the out of pocket cost for this rifle. I suppose I could underprice it and make a few more people happy, but it is what it is. Price it out yourself if you want and I will be glad to provide you with the list of suppliers I used.

Lord willing it will go out to checkering next week and should be ready for photography in two weeks.

I will start a new thread with all current info including ticket price, where to purchase as well as all the info about shipping etc.

Thanks for the bump.

Ok, My 2 cents.

The club I belong to in Michiganraffles a couple guns a year.

Usually the average cost of the gun is aroung $1000-$1200

The tickets sell for $20

We print 100-125 tickets, when those are sold we hold the drawing.

We have 850 active members and the tickets usually take 2-3 months to sell.

Other than guns, right now we are raffleing off a Polaris 4 Wheeler.

Our cost ---about $6000

We are only selling 1000 $10 tickets.

There is another thread that goes into how the money will be used. We truly are trying to build something that will last far longer than we do. You have helped in that.

Hello Darr,

Yes things are a lot different in Arkansas than Cali. The Arkansas Game and Fish started a shooting program based on the rules of ATA trap for the purpose of getting the youth of Arkansas back outdoors, and it has worked. Since starting 6 years ago, if my memory is correct, there have been over 15,000 possibly as many as 20,000 students go through this program without a single firearm related accident. The Arkansas legislature passed a bill allowing firearms on school campuses if they were to be used in a school related activity. Yep.....this is a unique place in this "everything must be politically correct" age.

Thanks for the bump.

Mike
