Super Lube.....period. Don't be fooled by the designer greases, they're just someones grease in a different container, at 20 times the price.

Lucas is hard to find around here. I use Farm and Fleets JT 6 wheel barring grease it is red, thick and tacky like Lucas or Stooters Choice Red in the surenge.

Designer grease, grease that someone bought from places like JD, McMaster Carr, or tractor supply and repackage it to make a fast buck from trapshooters.

Mobile 1 or Stp depending on the weather- hotter weather stay with STP or Mobile 1

Cold weather- Mobile 1

BTW, mcmaster.com has a pretty easy to understand overview of the many greases that are out there, good reference for those that are interested. Grease is just like motor oil, to the masses, it's all about marketing. To those that understand their individual requirements, it's about the material inside the package.

Since you put it that way Super Lube looks like designer grease. Lucas Oils are a proven company with innovative products. But to each his own and as long as it works and prevent undue wear on bearing surfaces.

I have tried and used many different kinds and while all work there is none better than Lucas red and tacky. Great stuff.

Can't find Lucas, AmsOil has a better "Red and Tacky" Wheel bearing Synthetic grease.

My choice is a lube with the specifications of SuperLube and/or Viper Lube. They are made to be non-toxic, waterproof, high temperture resistant, a very wide range of temperatures with little change in viscosity, easy clean-up and my favorite.....non-staining.

I will echo 'they all work' and really what you get with the 'specialty' greases is a neat applicator like a syringe to apply small amounts of grease where it is needed.

I use white lithium grease just because I can tell when the grease is getting dirty and needs to be cleaned off and replaced. For the applicator I use a 75 cc syringe originally sold as a marinate injector ($5). One syringe full lasts me a couple of years.

It isn't just in trapshooting. A friend wrote the following, "Hairdresser just tried to sell me this hair serum. I said it feels like the stuff I use on my horse's tail - Cowboy Magic. I wrote down the ingredients and came home and compared - it is the same ingredients! She sells a tiny little bottle for $48.00 and I can get a huge bottle of Cowboy Magic for probably less than $10. Go figure."

It is true , they will all work. As 221 says, Super Lube is a very good grease. Synthetic food grade grease is the way to go. STOS is a little better from my experience with a tight Browning. If you don't mind wheel bearing grease all over your hands and clothes, buy the cheapest.

Any lubricant with rust inhibitors will work fine.

The most important thing about lubricating your gun is to wipe off the old lube after EACH use and use fresh clean lube before EACH use.

I've been using SuperLube for years. I was in the commercial marine supply business for many years and sold tons of it. Works for me.

IMO, if your gun's manufactory includes a lubricant with their name on it, what makes you think you'll need to switch to something else?

Properly clean all the wear points are 10 times more important than what lubricant to use.

Imagine how does a engine run? How an automatic M16 rifle cycle it's bolt? What kind of lubricants they use? And how many times your shotgun open and close in a week? Do we need better lubricant than the other two?

I also agreed with MIA, as lubricant is concerned, more is not better.

The best grease and oil is "CLEAN" grease and oil. The rest is all trivial.

That said, I also use the Gator Tears and Swamp Slime.

Crisco, bear greese, whale blubber, lard.

I have both Gator Tears and Swamp Slime. I prefer the Swamp Slime only because its a grease. Nothing personal against oil but I prefer grease.

Super lube is used on high pressure air equipment where oils can not be used

Super Lube also makes an oil, with the same temp range as the grease.

I've got some Chevron Ryko Tac (just like the Lucas product) but I prefer Lubriplate Engine Assembly Grease....I bought a case years ago on sale...so I have a lifetime supply (more like 5 lifetimes)...

StaLube open gear case lube. Sticks and won't come off.

Mobil 1 synthetic grease works very well, but it a bear to get clean when the gun is ready for wipe down/cleaning.

Whiz on this site sells a product he calls ALube I believe it is. A white smooth grease that applies great, stays in place, works well and comes off when you are done without a chisel and hammer. I bought some in syringes for easy application, and some small jars to give them both a try. And it works fabulous on your loader as well.

If you are not 100% in love with your current lube, buy some from him and give it a test drive. I think you will find it first class.

The US Military spent millions developing MILITEC grease and oil. It was originally developed for use on the Gatling gun. Why would you use a oil or grease that was developed for use on automobiles? Kolar supplies CMD gun lub with their shotguns but I haven't tried it. Since my taxes paid for the development of MILITEC, that's what I use.

After reading the comments here, I decided to order Lucas Red N Tacky. A 14-ounce tube costs $10 at Amazon, compared to $6 for a half-ounce of Super Lube.

Get one of your wife's give-away makeup brushes, put a few drops of Marvel Mystery oil (or Rem Oil, or STP, or 3-in-1, or Mobil 1, or 10w-30, or ...) keep it in a cigar-tube in your guncase, swat the shiny parts occasionally.

Clean everything occasionally with Dawn dish soap and hot water (on another makeup brush) and leave it out of the case for an hour to dry.

Lube and de-lube ain't rocket surgery.

I use Microsoft or Dell grease on my shotguns. Both products designed to lubricate laptop hinges. If it is good enough for a high tech computer, it's good enough for a shotgun.

I use Tri-Flow.....has Teflon, and won't "cook" out.

I don't know nuthin'.....but it seems to me that ANY grease creates a "cushion" between parts.....and that means those parts do not mate perfectly.....and maybe allows a gun to shoot loose quicker......but I can't prove it.

I don't know where you got that price of 1/2oz for 6.00 for Super Lube.

Sears has 3oz tubes of Super Lube for <4.50. And tubs for 14.00.

wouldn't you much rather use KY Jelly on your gun or do your close friends prefer the warming type. You seem to be very familiar with various lubricants so I'll defer to your vast knowledge!!

Shootin' Accesories had an item years back that was almost perfect. It was a plexiglas tube with removable ends. One end had a small brush attached to the lid and was filled STOS. Somebody who needed it more that me liberated it from my range bag....and then they quit selling it. $%$#%

What you need to know about grease or oil is Film Strength, it,s ability to stay in place, Resistence to corrosion, Resistence to water, and viscosity

Thick greases are designed generally for heavy duty use , tacky or sticky greases are designed for open gear cases the stickeyness being necessary to stop the grease from flinging off, corosion reistance greases are necessary where moisture can get into the workings, and water resistant greases are designed to not lose thier lubricity when water is introduced into the workings, viscosity is the pour rate at certian temperatures.

In guns you need a grease where the viscosity is sufficient to allow the grease to stay in place in a range of ambient temperatures.

Film strenght is detirmened by the Rockwell tests and classifies lubricants as to how much pressure determined in FT LBS that the lubricant can stand without the film breaking down and allowing metal to metal contact.

Corrosion resistance is nesecarry in guns as some of the residue can, if left in place too long, cause corrosion, also where humitity is high.

Water resistance is something we need as we often shoot in the rain, normal greases break down when exposed to water and allow metal to metal contact.

A good grease is Mainlube 340

The base product is Pensylvania Crude which is a parafinic base oil that does no mix with water, it has one of the highest readings on the rockwell test, it stays in place, and it is corrosion resistant, Pensylvania Cruse is recognised as the best lubricating base product in the world.

There are many more oils out there that use Pensylvia Cruse as thier base product, Omega is another one, but they are not cheap.

There are also oils that are similar, personal preference will dictate whether you use oil or grease, the main thing is to know what your product specifications are.

Just curious----Has anyone had any kind of a failure using any oil or grease? Obviously I'm talking regular cleaning and servicing. I've got a Lubritorium in my workshop with every brand and even made a few up,ie. trans oil @ stp, lithium grease @ break free etc. etc. and none of my weapons have galled, fallen apart or rusted away. In my ever so humble opinion the grease/oil thing is way over done. Look at the mechanism thats being discussed. High grade steels, no real pressure issues and clearances that, while close are nothing compared to, say, a crank bearing. Im betting that vaseline would do the job that is actually required. I suppose that the parent company could put a picture of a quail on it and charge twice as much but it would still do the job. Im thinking its much adieu about nothing.
