Here's the rebuilt coop we originally got for free. New hinges, some paint and engineering and we're ready to roll. When my daughter asked that it be moveable around the yard I was stopped short because I had no idea how to make that happen. How do you connect a wood box to a larger wire box and have it be semi-permanant so you can take them apart and relocate them?
In one of those ah hah moments I figured we could make two picture frames around the wood box - screw them together on both sides of the wire wall. Then cut out the wire and slide the wood box in place. It works fine, but alignment can be a problem on an uneven yard.
Wheel barrow type handles on each side and cheap lawn mower wheels finished the job. Hog rings hold the wire panels together. The whole family joined in. Holga is taking the picture.
Waiting for eggs now. Sheila, Nugget and Mango will have to deliver. (Tippie died.)

Google "chicken tractor".
I had no idea...now that is very nice.
If the raccoons get into the chicken coop are you going to change your mind about coon hunting?
I'm smarter than the coons, but I do have to admit I thought about some of those sub sonic 22 shells.
Time to kill the grubs and REMOVE THE FOOD SOURCE.
Chickens are a lot of fun and the eggs taste a lot better than the egg farm eggs in the store. We own 7 acres and our chickens are range free although we hatch our own eggs and keep them in a tractor for about 3 months and then let them range . We lose most to predators over time. We hatched 30 about 4 months ago and just recently lost 6 in one day to the neighbors dog. I have the 9mm ready for the next time it steps in the yard. We have lost a few to coyotes and coons. Even after all that, I still have a great time with the chickens. You will really enjoy the chickens. Just don't get to down when you lose one. I have found out that chickens have a very short shelf life. Nubs Wagner
My sister-in-law tried her hand at a chicken coop. She shared eggs with the family for a while, but a bobcat got most of the chickens. If it had been a coyote I could have shot it, but a bobcats here require a special license and tag, and have a short winter season. Thus they often act with impunity around chicken coops.
So far Mr. Coon has been leaving our chickens alone. Daughter doesn't want grubx spread on the yard because the chickens might eat it. So she's going to look into a non poisonous grub killer - I think it's called Milky Spore. She's motivated to resolve the conflict. Let's see what happens.
Begawk!
Mr. Coon showed up last night. We were watching tv when Johnny and I heard a chicken hit the back door with her beak. When I opened the door one of the hens came in the house. Then I saw those two little beady eyes and ears back by the tree line. Off he went and we set about putting the chickens safely back into their coop.
New rule: daughter can't leave the house with the chickens out. Before dusk they must be put back in their coop.
The chickens are still free loading. No eggs and we're on our second bag of feed. They're much bigger now and Johnnie's outside cat leaves them alone completely. Must be that sharp thing on the end of their head.

312.5 miles is too far for a house call or i'd fix your problem for good. :)
I'll ship 'em your way. Do you want them dead or alive?
I find this thread very egg-citing.
Chicken have to be 18 weeks old before they start to lay. We got 30 this may, just started laying last week. We got 5 different breeds. There is nothing like fresh eggs for breakfast. You want to have fun. Throw a grasshopper in the pen, they will tear it up.
Timd, you seem like an "eggs-pert" on this subject.
The girl next door turned white when I told her I liked to cook the eggs while they were still warm from the chicken!
She said she would never eat them un-processed. I asked her to explain this "process". She had no answer...She drives 6 miles for stale "processed" eggs.
Shannon, she was probably thinking that you were once again "eggs-aggerating".
Boneless chicken dinner!
I have raised a few bunch of chickens but no eggs pert by no means.
Joe,
Is that a Paul Reed Smith she's playing?
Nice chicken coup. Can't wait till we're living in the country again. Fresh eggs, nuttin like-em!
milt
Joe you need a Rooster to get them Chick's Eggcited!!
Foggy
I can't tell if it's a Paul reed smith or a banjo
Neighbors complained about the chickens throwing their mulch around so we put up a fence. I figure it's an investment in my kid's education. At least the chickens are laying eggs now. About 2 per day from 3 chickens. Not bad with the cold.
Enjoyed doing a little fencing; part of the educational process as well for the kids.
In the fore ground is the wild cat shack. Last week I saw 2 chickens stalking the cat who was down hugging the ground with it's ears back. Chickens were inching closer and closer. The cat was about to loose when my wife broke it up. Chickens will peck your eyes out. Red on head is a warning.
Joe,
Your a regular Urban Poultry Farmer now. :)
Leaned not to pick them up. They'll whack you with their beak. They're always together, checking stuff out. Got a heated water dish. Looks like we're in it for the long haul. We'll see how they do in the dead of Winter.
Hey,I'm really sorry to hear about Tippie. Our deepest condolences........The Reynolds family.
That reminds me... I need to pay my Homeowner's Association fees.

If this was San Diego County you would be fined for having an un-permitted structure.
There's more than one advantage to living in an unincorporated area. We can have cat shacks, chicken coops, and backyard fires as long as you have chairs around the fire as in 'for recreational use'.
Tippie's story is rather sad. My wife brought in some neighbor kids who over handled Tippie. I later came back from my bike ride to a funeral in the garden. Sad faces all around and a little stick cross. The others birds adjusted quickly.
Begawk.
We upgraded the coop and are consistently getting 3 eggs a day; 1 per chicken. Did learn to lock them into the coop each night at dark. I chased a coon away not long ago after it tried to carry the brown one over the fence at 1:30AM. The feathers must have saved it's life. She lost quite a few. Fence keeps the coyotes out but a coon can climb right over.
Joe,
Gander Mountain sells a brand of trail-cam now that is only $60. It will sense movement, take an infrared photo, and time-stamp the picture.
Once you pattern what time he's coming and going...I think you'll find that the process of climbing that fence leaves the subject "silhouetted" quite nicely against even the most minimal source of light behind him.
Combined with other product info contained above...I think you can figure this out yourself. (Hint: the unique technological element employed on your "Kuhner" works across multiple platforms).
How often do ducks lay eggs and how do they taste? The pond isn't ours and they'd have to cross the road to get there an back so it'd be kind of tough on them. We're loosing feed to birds, squirrels chipmunks and possums like you say, but the girls in the Kuhn family like the eggs so we're stickin to chicken.
Buzz - we used to put up an electric fence to keep the coons out of the sweet corn patch. It was just high enough to get the push mower under it to keep the grass and weeds from shorting it out. We used a 'weed chopper' model that would really get your attention. It worked pretty well unless we forgot to turn it back on each day after picking. I'm sure it would help us here.
The only problem with putting them in the coop each night is getting up in the morning to let them back out. One seems to think she is a rooster and does this weak crowing in the morning until we let them out. We've heard one will take on the dominant role of the rooster and crow like one. I'm usually the first one up, so I usually take care of it. I don't mind. I think they like me for it.
How do you like my home made gate? It's a dog pen panel laid on it's side. I know it's not straight. I blame it on the guy who poured the cement for the patio. Sheila and the others don't mind.
There is another critter that will pay you a visit on a regular basis if you have them around and don't have a top on your pen, and that is a great horned owl. When I was a kid many, many years ago, it took dad several nights before he caught the owl in the chicken pen one night and ended the owls career with a 12 ga.
Joe I was going to suggest an electric wire around the top of the cage and you might want to put one down low too, they might try to dig under the wire
Hawks will also try to kill them at least they will kill a guinea, one time my wife bought a bunch of guineas to try to control grasshoppers. She would put them in ever night but if there was a storm in the area there was no way to get them in they were scared or just freaked out. Well after a few storms we were dwindling in numbers til we finally got down to just one left, we named him Lucky
And he was pretty lucky, until one day I was in the office doing some paper work, and I heard a hawk scream and a guinea cackle the pow I guess the guinea flew up and the hawk nailed it in air and during the chase they plowed into the side of the house, they hit so hard it knocked a picture off the wall
Lucky wasn't lucky that day
Bro in law has a cat named Lucky too. There is a 410 pattern on the bottom corner of his old well house to prove it.
when i was growing up, chickens could fly into and out of the top of the coop. chickens only walk now?
A three foot fence won't hold them in, but a five footer will. Don't know about the history of this. I do remember the chickens we had on the farm when I was a boy. I must have been 3 or 4 years old and would play in my sand box while the chickens would pick bugs out of the grass around me. Then one day I look over and there's my grandpa chopping their heads off. "Hey! Those guys are my friends." I remember sitting there watching them jump around without their heads. But of course, they tasted great. Ah, life on the farm. The owners, administrators and moderators of the Trapshooters.com have no obligation to keep objectionable messages off this forum.
