The end of the recoil system weight (or piston, it's correct name) that faces the muzzle has a retention pin through it - the notch is there to clear that pin.
Ed
AverageEd: How can that be,on my 870 Comp the piston & that pin are free to rotate? Ross Puls
Wayne
Make sure you keep the cap tight, in my opinion, that cap being loose causes the receiver to crack. Over years past when I shot them a lot never had one receiver crack.
RC
You're right, Ross - and the cap's insert is notched so it can be lined up with the pin and rotate with it. I've seen some Comps with a standard 870 cap and they still work okay but I have no idea for how long.
Ed
Hmmmmmmm! Guess the next time I take the Comp out I'd better check that, obviously I don't get it out very often. Thanks Ed. Ross Puls
I don't mean to be argumentative, but none of my 870 Competition's caps will screw on fully unless the notch and pin are aligned. And according to the 870 Competition owner's manual, that's by design. Now, if someone replaced the pin with a shorter one, perhaps alignment wouldn't matter.
Ed
Requested an 870 Comp owners manual from Remington, but got the regular 870 manual instead. I guess they don't have them anymore. If anyone would like to sell me one please contact me.
Harry Lyga
get one on e-bay, less than ten bucks shipped to you.
Rick
Great patterning gun. Just watch for the receiver crack. (mine cracked even though I kept cap on tight and used standard target loads) Drilling a 1/8 th inch hole at the end of crack will usually stop it. Have you noticed the 1000 has that long relief cut behind the bolt handle cut? This gun needs it too.
Photo of repair
Oooopps.......meant 1100
I need a reciever and magazine tube for mine, the threads at the end of the tube broke.
Rick
Thank you Hivoltfl for the ebay tip. Can you just replace the tube if you can find one? When mine breaks I'll have to machine another one. That's what they pay me for. I haven't cut metal in a long time and maybe forgot how to do it!
Harry
On my 870 comp, the pin does not stick out, so there is no way to align the pin in the notch, should I be concerned? Thanks, Joe
Hey Hal1225 send me a e-mail and i will reply with a 870 comp manual others on trapshooter sent to me it is free and will help. bob mctaggart
Can anyone tell me how often they clean the gas assist on there 870 comp. And what they use? Thanks
I clean mine almost every time I shoot the gun and use bore solvent on a rag.
Ed
THANKS ED
I agree with Mac but it would be tough to convince Remington that something that didn't sell well in the 1980s won't flop 30 years later. Of course, what they would sell for today won't seem as expensive as it did back then.
But it's doubtful Remington would invest the man hours into making the same quality barrels as the Comps had. We'd probably get the same barrels as today's Classic Trap uses.
Ed
Thanks Mac, I appreciate it.
With all the stories about cracked receivers, can I shoot handicap loads, up to 1250 FPS? I normally shoot 2 3/4 or 3 Dram, thanks, Joe
Given that Competitions are no longer available new and old ones are becoming more scarce, wouldn't a reasonable substitution simply be a nice 1100 trap (or field with trap or adjustable stock installed) with a shell catcher? Just asking.... Regards, Ed
I suppose the 1100 is the closest substitute but, it just isn't the same as the pump action Comp. I like the barrel better, the high straight wood, and the pump action better.
Dad gum it! More sleepless nights... Regards, Ed
Guys, I dont see an o ring on mine. I ordered a new one from Midway. Looking at all the drawings and schematics am I correct that the o ring goes over the piston, into the gas cylinder to where it is seated against the two vent holes that run into the barrel? Thanks, Joe
CAN ANYONE HELP WITH THE LOCATION OF THE 1/16"GAS HOLES.I LOOK ALL AROUND THE O RING AND COULD NOT FIND? THANKS
They are probably plugged, if you have shot it quite a bit especially with slower burning (or some of the promotional stuff) powders (or bought it used)the gas holes may be plugged with carbon, the holes are at an angle so you can clean them with a small drill bit as per joee12 above they are right by that small "O" ring. Have you noticed any increase in recoil?? If they are plugged you may have to do some careful probing to find them. After you find them the 1st time just clean them as needed. Ross Puls
THANKS ROSS
FOUND GAS HOLES BOTH PLUGGED. CLEANED WITH DRILL BIT.SHOULD BE A BIG DIFFERENCE.JUST OWNED THE GUN A SHORT TIME,STILL LEARNING.MAC DO YOU KNOW WHAT PART NUMBER THAT IS FROM CAT.THANKS ROSS AND MAC
Thanks Guys!!
Glad you found them, sounds like you just purchased it "used" and the ports were probably plugged when you got it. ( I have purchased a couple that were like that) I think maybe the previous owner forgot or didn't know how to keep them clean and when they plugged up it started kicking so they sold it. Their loss is your gain. The 1st time you shoot it after unplugging those ports you may notice the sounds made by the gas recoil reduction system but I'm fairly certain you will like it. If you shoot 7\8oz. you may not see a lot of difference in recoil reduction, but if you shoot full trap loads (3-1&1\8) you will notice it. They are a VERY pleasant gun to shoot when you are shooting 200-300 rounds a day. Enjoy Ross Puls
YES JUST PURCHASED ABOUT A MONTH AGO.I SHOOT A 1 1/8 OZ.LOAD,SO I SHOULD NOTICE.DO YOU PUT ANY LIGHT OIL ON THE PISTON PARTS AFTER CLEANING THEM WITH SOLVENT?I BOUGHT MY OTHER 870 IN 1966 IT IS THE BI-CENT.STAMPED 870 TC WITH GREAT WOOD.THE 870 COMP.SHOOTS EXACTLY THE SAME LESS RECOIL.THAT CHOKE IN BOTH GUNS JUST SMOKES THEM. THANKS AGAIN ROSS DO YOU KNOW OF ANYMORE FOR SALE?
Tom: The only thing extra I oil is the piston rod where it slides, no sorry I don't know of any more FS, they do show up here on TS once in a while. Ross
THATS WHAT I DID.THANKS YOU BEEN A BIG HELP
I'm wondering how far the piston and rod travel? I'm guessing about an inch or so, based the soot left on the rod. I suppose the hotter the load the more it travels.
On a different note; will a regular 870 barrel fit on the Comp? I know the gas system is incapacitated, but will it fit and function?
YES listen to GEMINI---SORRY---I forgot about that, I helped GEMINI get that spring and follower out so that the magazine tube could be cleaned boy was that a ornery job. Ross
Is this correct placement of the oring, over the plunger? It does not physically go inside of the gas chamber where the 2 holes are that lead up to the barrel, thanks, Joe
Don't have mine to look at right now but I think the "O" ring goes in that groove in (on) the bbl. lug to seal it inside the magazine tube so the gas pushes against the piston instead of just escaping out the hole in the magazine cap. Hope GEMINI is reading this as he will have his handy to confirm or deny.--Ross Puls
Yup, Ross is correct. The o-ring belongs in the groove on the lug not where it is located in the picture.
Hope this help. Have a great weekend to all!
Thank you all for the help with the Oring.
Gemini, I did see your post, I am going to take your advice and clean the magtube like you decribed in the morning, Joe
Are these guns as finicky as they sound? I have the chance to buy one for $600 that is 98%...30" Full Trap, Magna-Ported, perfect bore, no wear. I just want to shoot it and keep it clean, not carry around a bushel basket of parts that I spent hours trying to find on the Internet. I had enough of that experience when I shot an 1100! Gun will be shot mostly with 7/8 oz. low pressure reloads.
Thanks.
I don't think mine is finicky, I am just trying to get to know it. If I could find one for $600 in 98% condition I wouldn't think twice about it, Joe The owners, administrators and moderators of the Trapshooters.com have no obligation to keep objectionable messages off this forum.
