There are a number of elements to successful shooting - experience, hand/eye and muscle coordination, visual acuity, reaction time and more.
The one conspicuously absent from the list is the shooting form that a shooter uses. Shooting form is the gun mount, body posture, head position and stance the shooter uses.
Form is important because it controls swing smoothness and swing accuracy. Equally important, form affects the likelihood of the head (and eye) remaining in the same place relative to the rib.
Each gun has a particular point of impact (POI). It puts the center of the pattern in a particular place at a particular distance. This is important to know because the shooter needs to put the front bead or muzzle in a particular place relative to each target when creating sight pictures (similar to aiming).
What shooters some tines overlook is the fact that a gun's POI is affected by the position of the eye relative to the rib when a shot is fired. A figure-8 bead alignment is one example.
The eye serves the same purpose as the rear sight on a rifle. It must remain in the same place relative to the rib when sight pictures are created. If it changes during a swing, accuracy is lost, at times, enough that targets are lost.
This explains why shooting form is so important - because it affects the stability of the head and eye on the comb during swings. Very little movement is required to cause lost targets. Couple that with slight imperfections in sight pictures and it explains why targets can be missed with a 30" pattern.
Put simply, a good shooting form is one with a natural and upright body posture, an upright head and neck posture, one with a secure gun mount and a stance that allows swinging to all targets while maintaining the eye's alignment with the rib.
To use a good shooting form, the stock dimensions of the gun must allow it - must fit the size and shape of the shooter. The number of shooters realizing this is the reason stock fitters are so busy, especially the good ones. Talk to shooters who have recently begun to shoot a gun that was made to fit and they will explain how important a well fittings gun is and how their shooting improved when the gun was made to fit.
"Stock Fitter's Bible" was written for shooters who want to improve their shooting but cannot visit a good stock fitter. It explains shooting form in detail and relates that to shooter size and shape and stock dimensions that allow or prevent a correct shooting form to be used.

Subject: Stock Fitter's Bible - Eliminate limitations From: 20yard Email: Date: Sun, Mar 29, 2009 - 05:06 PM ET Website Address: As a new shooter I can say I found Stock Fitter's Bible very informative. Many other sources I found gave general advice some of which was conflicting but Rollin's book explains the effect of each adjustment clearly and logically and weaves in the history of stock design. A great reference book and a good read. __________________________________________________________________________

Subject: STOCK FITTER'S BIBLE You can shoot better From: Peter Falk Email: Date: Mon, Sep 14, 2009 - 05:44 PM ET Website Address: I purchased a precision fit stock and the stock fitter bible at the same time. Using that book I set up the stock to fit me. The result is a stock which makes the gun fit me and it shoots where I look. Perhaps the most important information gleanwd from the text was the importance of pitch. Take the guess work out of stock fitting and purchase the book. Subject: STOCK FITTER'S BIBLE You can shoot better From: over the hill Email: Date: Mon, Sep 28, 2009 - 09:26 AM ET Website Address: I agree with Fred. I purchased a copy several months ago. I have shot a Model 12 since the mid 70s but in my later years found out it didnt fit anymore.(may never have fit) I had had an adjustable comb installed and an add on balsa rib for testing. It now shoots high enough and my scores have increased. It took a little playing around, but it was worth the effort. Rollin explains very well how to do it. I thought I needed a little of this and a little of that but found out I needed much more. Regards....Gerald __________________________________________________________________________
