So it seems as if half the old guys stepping up to the line these days have a stogie in their mouth, and I'm sure you guys are no exception. So as someone relatively new to the whole cigar thing, I'm just looking for some insight! I definitely prefer a medium-full bodied cigar, and as of right now I'd have to say that my favorite is by Drew Estate, the Liga Privada No. 9. I have heard good things about Kristoffs but have not been able to try one yet. So what's your favorite? -Trappy
trappy,
You're too young to smoke!
ss
One that's never lit!
Kuba Kuba & Cold Fusion Tea by Drew Estate...Tim Hall
I'm 18 now! And I don't smoke often, just a few a month tops. -Trappy
Arturo Fuente--Don Carlos #2
The Liga 9 is a great cigar. I enjoy a Padron 1964 Exclusivo if price is no object. Otherwise, the Ramon Allones Special Selection is a great cigar for $5!!
LaGloria Wavell or "cheap bastard" torpedo. Goes good with a little Yukon Jack.
JON
I like the cubans but my favorite all time are the Padron 1964 anniversario's. The Exclusivo is great but all of the 1964s are good. I also like the Don Carlos line and I prefer torpedos when ever I smoke a cigar ( which is not often anymore) The Padron will set you back $15 +++ but worth every penney. Now Trappy if you are man enough to smoke cubans, get ready to send me $20 each plus shipping
I think they smell OK if someone else is smoking them...10 or more yards away...and THEY'RE downwind of you.
I could never understand why anyone would actually WANT to smoke one. The smoke tastes like sh!t, they make your breath smell like sh!t, they make your clothes stink, and you wake up the next morning with your mouth feeling like a cat slept in it.
Yukkkkk!
In the early 80's I used to smoke two boxes of Macanudo's a week- I kinda remember the name Lonsdale or something similar to that. But, when I was told I had an asbestos exposure I quit. My Dr. said, tobacco is the primer & asbestos is the powder. Combine the two & you WILL get lung cancer. If I make it to 75, I'll start going after good cigars again. After 75 I'm not cutting my shooting career too short.
Phil Berkowitz
Right now, Rocky Patel Vintage 1990.
You might try a "slick willie"... Takes mapp gas to get one lit, they say.
I consider cigars wife repellents! Kim :)
I'm a cheap SOB and don't like paying too much for my cigars.
So after trying a few zillion different brands, I stick with (2) of my favorites.
Hoyo De Monterrey Excalibur #1 or Cinco Vegas Gold #1. Just outstandingly mellow and last for about 1 1/2 hours each.
They're about $3.75 a piece on Cigars International's website.
Kevin
Don't start---------Dummy. The reason all those old guys (me included) smoke stoogies is because Camels, Kools, and all the rest of the "fags" are no longer acceptable, even at a gun club. I've done both and it's hard to quit after many years of puffing that crap in other peoples faces. It used to be OK-------NO LONGER.
"Tobacco is a plant indeed, From the devil came it's seed, It stains your pockets and scents your clothes, and makes a chimney of your nose" Shoottron.
What's amazing is hearing an 18 year old asking wh at's your favorite cigar. It reminds of an incident I witnessed when I was in the navy in Charleston,SC. In the old days Charleston was a WIDE open town. Well ,outside the main gate of the navy base there was a multitude of beer joints know as the "strip". At one of these renown places there was a sweetheart know aS "DIRTY DEB". after hearing a hot running seaman deuce (E-2) running his mouth, Dirty Deb, who had enough said, "shut your mouth sunny, the NAVY has more time in me, than you have in the NAVY."
Phil Berkowitz
Kim, I agree but in my case the wife loves a good cigar ( just like me, only on occassion) so she is not offended. We have a friday night date night about once a month, thats where we sit on the deck, smoke a good cigar and sip good scotch and tell each other everything
Cuban, you are lucky that your wife appreciates cigars. I wish I could get used to them....I run when he lights one! Kim :)
Kim, they are girlfriend repellants too! Just have to be sure that there's not chance of kissing a girl that night, otherwise things could get bad...fast -Trappy
any of the "acid" cigars by drew estate.....
I have a favorite per price range:
$1-3: Garcia & Vega
$3-5: Punch London Club
$5-10: it's a Punch, just can't remember name
$10 and up: Anything that Dunhill makes
Matt
Monte Cristos made with Cuban leaf are pretty good. Also Upmanns. Black Partagas or any good cigar someone may give me.
I think all those that enjoy a GOOD cigar should try a Playboy by Don Deigo,,,,,come back and give your report,,,,you'll be impressed,,,
Smoothest smoke always ask for FINO as opposed to ROBUSTO when talking to your local tobacconist. Smoothest smoke you can smoke on empty stomach and not turn green. And subtle smell wont stink out the whole bar. Avo,the Griffin,Rothschild cadet,Thomas Hinds,Upmann, even counterfeit Cohiba`s you see at the likker store..
Always Robusto is Fuentes,Partagas,Don something or other from mexico, maduro wrappers offend my palette,Romeo Julliete, real cubans. But this is subject to change depending on the age of the tobakkee, and how Im feeling or what I ate or drank.
$15 stick. La Aurora Preferidos and all the varieties are good. My favorite so far is the Sapphire. Cheap smoke is the Fuentes curly heads or especials. Love em. Jimmy
My old high school football coach said "he's out like an Owl Cigar" if you really hit somebody hard on the field!
Partagas Black Label is number one with me. I go through about 4 a month. To those of you who don't like cigars, that's great by me but if one of you ever tells me my smoke offends you while we are outside, we're going to have an unpleasant exchange. I was at the Greek theater in LA a few years back listening to a jazz concert. I was all alone in the upper deck section without a single person within 50 feet. Down below, a couple of lesbians sat smooching and hitting on a joint. After a few minutes, an usher approached me and told me my cigar was offensive to the couple below. I told him my senses were offended by their public display of affection and their marijuana smoke. Guess who wound up ejected from the concert? I thought Al Green was lousy anyway. Last year I was at the car wash. 9:00 AM, outside, no one around and I light up. A few minutes later a woman walks out and moves down wind of me. A few moments later she approaches and tells me my cigar stinks and would I put it out. I told her no, she should move up wind. She said she shouldn't have to. I said I was there first. She said my smell was offensive. I told her her face was offensive but I wasn't telling her to put it out. She threatened to get the manager. I told her to go ahead. The manager was an Arab. Guess who had to leave? They even put Amoural on my tires.
Outside, in the wide open with no children around, smoke Nazis can go pound sand in their ears.
I've forgotten....I quit smoking in 1983....
ombg---another unplesant geezer at the trap club. Stink'in up the area, and not caring. Been there and done that.
Rocky Patel 1990's, also the R-P SunGrown is a good smoke. Many, Many more to be enjoyed, some very good cigars are listed above. I like most all.
After a good days work, or better yet, a good day shootin',,,,, good friends, cold beer, a sipper of my Bushmills Irish Whiskey, and a fine cigar..... All that might be left is a beautiful woman to finish the night......
ooppp's did the alarm just go off???? better wake-up, time to go to work again.
Matt
I like those cheap, little short wimpy ones that only last for a few minutes like they have at the White House. Monica
The one that is being puffed on 50yds away..........
GS
Fuente canoes light
Questa Ray and acid have some good ones or if your going on a cruise to the gun club Swisher Outlaw double barrel rum. Make sure to take your hat of before lighting one of those. Kirk
Arturo Fuente 8-5-8
Ask Bill Clinton.......he had some "specially seasoned!"
AndyH ;-)
Cuban Romeo Y Julieta Short Churchill
OMGB,
Great story! Good post, also. Glad you had the last laugh. Fairly new to hand made long fillers myself, but have found a few I keep returning to while working my way through the tobacconist's inventory. Cusano M-1 Churchill, & Cusano 18 both in Churchill and Gordo. Many still on my list.
Regards,
Don Whiton
Excaliber 1066 dark knight II. Choke on my smoke.
Big Heap: For a minute there, I thought you were suggesting trappy was doing white owls?! Tom Rhoads
Trappy, assuming mom and dad are letting you try cigars you should make a point of trying a Dego Rope.
Fuente, Hemingway
I always liked the Rum Crooks. Man what a taste. Get drunk and stink up the place at the same time.
Trappy, my advice is to find another vice. You can hardly find a place where you can smoke em now, it will be illegal in 5 years. Even at the gun club, they are frowned upon.
But if you must, check out anything by Fuente in a maduro wrapper. Check out CAO and their line of "flavored" cigars, like a Vanilla, some of the do gooders find it less offensive.
Life never ceases to amaze me. You're outdoors, surrounded by lead dust, primer gasses (more lead) and the by products of burnt nitro-cellulose and you worry about a little cigar smoke? Sheesh, what lunacy. Now, smoking on the line might be distracting to other shooters so in that case I say, put it out or set it down, either way, no cigars on the line. But sitting on the bench between rounds or hanging out outside the club house, why not? Smoke Nazis can move away.
Trappy, you had better be a man of good self control before you jump in. 4 or 5 cigars a month is not going to ruin you. But, if you get the nicotine bug and end up doing 20 a month or more, that will catch up to you and cause problems. Like alcohol, tobacco is an acquired taste and a product that can be harmful if abused. Smoke only good cigars. The cost factor will help to restrain you. It's a lot like women. All are good but only a few are worth the cost. Go with the best and then be willing and happy to pay for it or don't go at all. Same is true with liquor too.
Trappy, try a Pink Owl. Not as harmful to your health.
HM
All this cigar talk makes me want one. Guess I will go to the rifle range today and shoot and smoke. ( and I was trying to quit)
omgb, the most I've had in a month is 3...I definitely don't smoke often and will absolutely keep it that way.
Cuban...I still want my Cuban! :-P -Trappy
THERE ARE SOME REALLY OUTSTANDING CIGARS MENTIONED HERE AND I HAVE PROBABLY SMOKED MOST OF THEM AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. DUNHILL USED TO HANDLE MONTE CRUZ WHICH WERE OUTSTANDING AT THE TIME BUT THE BEST CIGAR I HAVE EVER SMOKED WAS A DAVIDOFF DOM PERIGNON!! USED TO GET THEM IN HONG KONG FOR $3.50/EACH BUT THAT WAS IN THE EARLY 80'S. I HAVEN'T HAD ONE IN YEARS BECAUSE THEY ARE CUBAN TOBACCO AND YOU CAN'T GET THEM INTO THE COUNTRY YET BUT I UNDERSTAND FROM A COUPLE OF PEOPLE WHO BRING CIGARS IN TO THE USA THAT THEY ARE @$180.00 EACH NOW. TRAPPY, SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TRY ONE. THEY ARE AMAZING.
BROWNK80
Swisher Sweets.
Onyx 642
Tron, if you actually like those try the Capone Slims. Similar, but 20x better. -Trappy
Trappy try some of them pink bubble gum cigars you get at a candy store. You will like them and every one around you will like them. Plus you can blow bubbles with them and they fit better in your age group.
The one thats not lit. D Winter
About thirty years ago I quit when a friend had a bout with throat cancer..I have cought myself putting a ciger in my mouth and realizing I don't smoke anymore before I lit it. I can still home in on a good smelling pipe or cigar and it doesn't bother me one bit. Sometimes I miss them but at my age, I don't remember them too well.
Big Jack
Do you know what Sammy Davis Jr. said to Rock Hudson when he arrived in heaven?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? "I tried to warn you Rock,...whether yo smoke'em or poke'em, them butts will kill you
Honduran Santa Rosa.
Stay away from smoking cigars and drinking whisky at the same time, the taste will stay in your mouth for at least 24 hours ..... really nasty.
bohemian "bamboo" hard to find but worth the hunt also if you like a small cigar try cohiba "pequen0s"
Ha Ha, Calvin you really cracked me up with that one
For many years I was an Onyx Maduro and Royal Jamaica guy. OMGB got it right when he mentions Partegas Black Label - excellent smoke... preferred the aluminum tubes to the crystal.
Recently I picked up a 1/2 dozen boxes of Macanudo Maduro on clearance (1st Quality/fresh) at $40/10 in the Baron Rothschild... oooooh, no complaints.
In general I buy 640-650s, Dominican and dark wrappers. If you buy in bulk make sure you keep 'em in humidity. Bought some Partegas in Cabo, nice, but honestly prefer the DR varieties - a bit milder.
Enjoy!
jay
My shooting buddy (my next door neighbor) and I end our Sundays at the range with a couple of cigars. We sit on the front porch with some cold beer or a bottle of port depending on the weather. No wives or kids around. Just an hour or so talking about guns, cars, the "joys" of marriage, 7 1/2s or 8s, etc. Sometimes it's not the cigars, but the conversation and the company. I do, however, enjoy a nice maduro.
Dave
Marsh Wheeling and Petri. You might be able to handle the MW but to young for the Petri. I doubt if you could get through one.
sheesh! Now I'm doing it. Should read, "you might be able to handle the MW but TOO young for the Petri."
Ibold Black Petes, now thats a real mans cigar.
ROLY #2 MADURO-They are PURO INDIO 2nds, 30.00 bundle from phatash.com
Jim Sims
5 cent King Edwards. I used to love them. They would make your head spin a bit at first though when you inhaled them deep.
I forgot to mention that when my buddy and I smoke our cigars on the porch after shooting we wear our bunny slippers. We put our feet up on the railing and put on puppet shows where the bunnies debate which choke to use from the 16 yard line. today I enjoyed a nice 5 Vegas. I never met a 5 Vegas I didn't like, once I got past the peppery beginning!
Itsaboy's are great to and free most of the time.lol
