Anyone watching it for 3 nights ? On History channel
My wife is from Logan WV. Her great great grandfather was in the Logan Wildcats of the confederate army. This feud had its origins in the civil war. Hatfield's were confederate......McCoy's of Kentucky, union. As we visit we often go by the Hatfield family cemetery. I often had given my wife grief of being from a family of union sympathizers. She researched her family history to prove me wrong. My great great grandfather was killed at Sharpsburg. We are both proud of our stars and bars heritage.
I watched it for a little while, maybe 30 minute. Doubt if I watch tomorrow.
I have ridden the "Hatfield & McCoy ATV Trails" in WV. They were more interesting than the show appears.
I watched it till I started to get tired. I have to get up at 5:00am. I did go to Netflix and now have the show saved.
I didn't think it was to bad but we are just getting into the show.
Show got much better the last hour.

I thought it was interesting. I had heard the story about the hog. but not the rest of the issues. It's not a feature film, just history. And a hell of a lot better than Fat Pawn Stars, Swamp Jerks, or Pickers fools.
I was looking forward to it despite Costner being in it... hardly made it through the first 20 minutes. Terrible acting - really bad costuming (fake beards that reallly, really look fake) and many firearms discrepancies. Won't be watching any more. (and Costner was as bad as I feared he would be)
What was the show-to-commercial minutes ratio?
Wasn't very good. Turned it off within the first 45 minutes
I am hard hearing, so just like all movies, they played silly music in the background, and I couldn't hear the words.
But......The commercials were plenty loud and plenty frequent.
Acting was so-so.
At best it was offensive!
Curt
FEAB9
The first hour really drug along. Second hour was a little bit better. Going to have a tough time making it through 6 hours.
made it trough 25 minutes,, dont think I will be back
I enjoyed it, but I wasn't spending the whole time thinking about ways to bitch about it.
And your point is Galt?
Filmed outside LA !
blade819
Curt. I dont mean to be crtical of your comment but I am interested to know why you feel it was at best offensive?? I have always enjoyed your posts but this one puzzles me? I did not find it offensive. It simply brought back memories of how life used to be in the hills. I did not enjoy the first night but I thought last night was much better. I spent a lot of time in the mountains of Virginia, Kentucky, Tenn & Arkansas and this movie pretty well depicts life as it was well into the 60's
Yeah, I've been watching it and it's pretty interesting. It's kind of like when I was watching "Roots" back in the late 70's. After that show, I hated white people....now, I really dislike confederates.
I think I've been reliving the REAL "Hatfield & McCoyd" with my neighbors for the last 34 years. Countless police calls, numerous township complaints, 5 court cases. Complaints to the township, such as, I have to many Dandelion in my yard and it's spreading or I have surveillance cameras mounted on my house and one is pointed their way. I've won all cases thus far if you want to say hiring a lawyer to go to court winning. One more silly move and I file harassment. But, no body broke out the guns yet.....hehehe! Altho' I was told that the wife took the .22 into the garage, locked herself in the car to committ suicide but didn't no how to load it. Pity!
I recorded it on the DVR and shoot through the commercials. Only way to see one of these type shows, I will never sit through a show with commercials again as long as DVR available.
The story is interesting, but, so far, it looks like the whole thing could be done in 90 minutes.
Costner still is a terrible actor, Paxton is even worse, always have been. But I will finish it tommorrow.
I watched it and enjoyed it both parts and I'm looking forward to tonight. When it comes out on DVD I will buy that too. It is American History, like it or not. Woody
The wife and I enjoyed both shows so far. We will have to DVR tonight's show because it's league shoot night.
From my perspective and my last name is Hatfield and my parents were born and raised in Logan County WV.There are some historical facts and some we are trying to research but there is also TV sensationalism too. Stories from my grandfather (born 1906 Devil Anse died 1921) he was a hard man but fair and very family orientated. You must remember back then it was lawless and tough. A very hard place to live but he was an incredible worker.
Bryan
Damn tough crowd....my wife and I have enjoyed it.
Cuban...
Offensive = Bad acting, bad realism, bad dialogue, bad prop's, etc.
If a film company wishes to make a historical documentary, then please be gracious enough to pay attention to the details.
That's what I find offensive.
Curt
FEAB9
It is a pleasent break from Pawn Stars, Pickers and Anchient Aliens. I watch it and enjoy it for what it is just entertainment. I must say it is difficult to stand those incredibly stupid numerous commercials. Maybe i'll wait till it comes on netflix.
warren
Gottcha Curt, Thx
I watched two nights because my son-in-law is from WV and a real "salt-of-the-earth" fellow. This movie and he don't match exactly. I know he is watching and we will have to sit with a glass or two of scotch and discuss it on Father's Day. I couldn't ask for a better fellow to take care of my daughter and two grandsons. I was surprised at the lawlessness of the period. The guy wearing the badge didn't let it curb his lawless tendencies. Maybe I would feel differently if I were a film critic and hadn't been reading the latest issue of Rifle magazine as I watched. It was the best of summer television.
I thought it interesting. I am curious about the historical accuracy though. In some respects the McCoys seemed more "likeable", if that's even possible where both sides are intractable violent. The fact that the place was remote, the era was Reconstruction, and the times generally lawless, it is easy to believe that such events could take place.
I'll watch the conclusion tonight but I will likely switch to the Mets-Phillies game during commercials. Certainly beats the "reality" shows and the summer replacements.

I enjoyed the 2 parts I have seen and will watch the rest. A lot better than
most of the TV crap that is on today. I'm not talking about just movies.
I think that damn lawyer should be hung. Ken U
Well, I didn't want to mention this because there be a few posters on this forum I'm suspectin' have some Hatfield blood in them (The Literalist, APrice and Buzz-gun come to mind). My great, great, great Grandfather was none other that Tronald P. McCoy, the original inventor of the the cotton gin and a varietly of high quality, yet reasonably priced Cat grooming devices. His pattens were all stolen by the damn Hatfields! I'm still fixen to get even ya'll.
Tron,
Your story is a touching one, yet highly suspect.
Nobody alive in those days would bother to devote any time to devising "Cat grooming devices".
First reason being that cats were for practical purposes in those days, vice strokin'. The most significant factor debasing your tale is that the Buck family had already invented the Buck Knife, which remains the perfect cat skinin'--oops, I mean cat grooming device ever devised.
Guy B.
I am watching and like it so far, but when I read where it was filmed I was shocked. They filmed the thing in the mountains of Transylvania. I though we still had some back woods left in this Country.
Tom Furst
Guy, you write like a damn Hatfield............
Reading these posts is almost as entertaining as last nights episode and probably as fictional. I am watching it and interested in the way they portray Appalacihians. I have lived with these very proud and simple people for the past 6 years. The portrayl in the series I believe is fairly accurate. As I explained to my wife last night who took some offense in the percieved portrayl of ignorant Southerners, there is a difference between illiterate and ignorant. The Appalachians during that time did best with what they had which was primarily Family. It's still that way today. Can't wait till tonights episode via DVR without commercials evry 5 minutes.
blade819
I bet that lawyer was a democrat
warren
I didn't get to watch it, but my wife did. I was going to watch it later, but she said in the first twenty minutes she hardly understood a word that was said. This woman has hearing like a whitetail deer, but she said that the backgroun d noise and music was so overbearing that she could not understand the dialogue. If she can't understand it, I know an old shooter like me can't! Jack
Use closed caption if having trouble with background noise in the film or understanding the dialects. Comes in real handy when watching BBC.
This is not Academy Award material, but then what is. From what I read about the feud, this accounting is closer than any previous Hollyweird treatment.
Lots of details left out, some sterotyping for sure, but trying to tell a story that took over 25 years to unfold in 5 hours (after commercials) isn't that easy.
I'm sure its been embelished a bit...because who would really want to watch 30+ years of two families bickering
I dont understand how anyone can watch programs with 4 minutes of show and 5 minutes of commercials and so on. I record on my DVR harddrive used to speed up scan button to get thru commercials 'til I found a button,SKIP, initially press is 30 sec,now a fast couple taps and any time I use 4 minutes on skip and a fast scan no commercials. I hope its good, most TV yuk, thank heaven for gun cleaning.
Why Calvin,,the same people who would argue 7 1/2s or 8's
lol Doug H.
I enjoy it, it is my kind of show. Will probably even watch it again. I personally think the acting is not to bad. They are shooting the right guns for the era and riding horses that are close to being historically correct not huge athletic looking quarter horses. Wish they would make more movies like it. I do agree that the commercials are a bit overdone.
I watched ir from beginning to end the only thing that irratated me was the commercials. I will buy it when it comes out on DVD so I can watch it with interruptions, just like I did with Band of Brothers and others. Woody
Not to bad of a show, won't rush out and buy it on DVD though.
Hollyweird and Accuracy is a oxymoron!
Yep, the commercials and their amount, especially in the last 45 minutes was totally out of line!! They should have realized that the people who watched, would be more interested in the "what happened to them" at the end of the show then the whole movie. They didn't give enough time to read the sub-lines!!!
Poor time management!
Sad thing is, of all the shows that were on cable at that time slot, it was the only thing of any substance!
I read on the internet that this was the most watched cable tv program ever with the exception of sports. I watched it all and thought it was good entertainment and I learned a few things. In my area it competed with Oreily and Sean and it was a pleasent break from politics. Those tv commercial people must think the viewing public are idiots, I'm really not interested in Joe Thiesmans prostate.
warren
I dont care about Joes prostate either...nor do I need a Pos-T-Vac...or a bottle of Cyvita..for Longer, Stronger, more frequent erections..but the idea of chatting with a "We are 18" girl is interesting
Guess I am different. I really enjoyed it. But yes some of the background noise was not good at all. From all I have read this was a fairly close accounting of the events. I never like commercials on anything I watch.
Wesleyb
I should tape it then I could watch the whole thing in a couple of hours. Just fast forward past the COMMERCIALS.
Excellent! Less the boring and bothersome commercials. Can't wait till it comes out on DVD with 3 hrs. of extras. All in all, very good. Highest 3 nights of cable viewers ever.
blade819
The Geico Hatfield and McCoy Cave man commerial was hilarious.
My step-dad was a Hatfield from Oklahoma. My mom showed me a picture of devil Anse and he and my step dad looked incredibly alike.
It would have been a pretty good show if it had been filmed somewhere that looked even remotely like Kentucky.
I believe some of it was shot in WV. However, most outdoor scence were shot outside LA and they even used John Boy's cabin as on of their cabins.
blade819
They mixed in events that happened after the feud. It was dramatized big time. In 25 years 13 people lost their lives some were just drunks fighting. I saw at least 13 shot in one scene.
As far as performances go I think Tom Berenger was excellent as Jim Vance. He was a good instigator and convincing dirtbag
Speaking of Berenger, I did not even know he was in it, until my wife pointed out who he was near the end of the first episode.
Guess that is what makes a good actor for me, is when you get so caught up in their character, you lose sight of who they are, even you know who they are before you see the moive.
Saying that howver there are the icons that you liked so well you did not care if their character was the same one in each and every movie, i.e. Wayne, Stewart, Fonda, etc., etc.
I didn't know that was Berenger either, but thought the actor playing Jim Vance did a great job. Now I know why.
Much to do about nothing IMHO.
Now, Lonesome Dove, that's all together different. Don't know if that could be topped.
Romania Becomes Appalachia (2:03)
Discover why the Southeastern European country of Romania was used as the Appalachian backdrop of the Hatfields & McCoys mini-series.
Thanks Joe. Living in Appalachia now, I find it very, very, VERY hard to believe their reason(s).
blade819
I was born and raised, and had my first job in Southern WVa. We studied the feud as WVa history in school--some of this was correct but other parts such as the multiple marriages and basic immorality were things we were not presented with. I'll give them some benefit of doubt since perhaps our teachers didn't think that material was appropriate for eighth graders in 1967. I do believe the amount of bloodshed was less than depicted and the feud actually lasted and festered a lot longer than they led one to believe. Don't think the families crossing paths was a frequent event either. I think not filming in the actual location may have had to do with the still strong union loyalties that exist in WVa and the higher production costs that would likely cause the producers. I had no trouble understanding the dialect used, but my wife from Pa. sure did. (Can't imagine why LOL) You'll not find finer people anywhere--they may not all be wealthy or even well educated but they are fine people and intellegent in most ways that matter.
Tom Frazer
Excellent commentary TF / Tom Frazer.
Tom I agree the best people you could meet anywhere.
How about they do a mini-series on the last 50 years in kenya? I'm tired of reliving the civil war , the hatfields & mccoys for the last 150 years. I'd like to see the navies of the world smoke the somali pirates. I'd like to see all our men & women in harm's way come home. I'd like to see our governmant chase all the illegal aliens (including obama) out of the USA. I'd like to see our government tell the UN to take a flying F**K.
I thought it was a good mini-series, the Hollywood writers had to write the dialogue so that you and I could understand it, and still have the hillbilly accent. Illiteracy was very commonin those parts back then. One of the problems the producers had was finding actors who could speak with hillbilly dialogue with an accent. Tom Berenger, Bill Paxton and Kevin Costner did a poor job trying to copy that accent. Powers Booth did an okay job, but he is originally from the south. It was filmed in Romania probably for cost reasons.
TF..nicely said! OZ.... good way to pollute a thread!
blade819
