All the above will work, all I know my wife doesn't complain about grease stains when I use Super Lube.
That's another plus for a great lube.

Are any of the products discussed above more effective for lubricating my hinge pin & bearing surfaces than plain, old wheel bearing grease?
Fop or Dapper Dan......
i went to tractor supply this week in n.e. ohio got some jt6 red tacky and hi-temp lith. grease 4.99 a tube only used it once but i like it thanks to john g. for the info. bob mctaggart
I like the Super Lube and StarBrite Teflon antiseize..mainly because they work and dont get stains all over my dang shirts like the colored greases
Gator Tears? Swamp Slime? Ultimate Slippo Synthetic HiTech Lubricating Pomade? It's just grease, as others have said. I use white lithium grease in a big plastic tube from the auto parts store (or Walmart!), The fancy applicator I use is my index finger. As Ed Harrison sid above, the temps and pressures are not high for the lubricant here; it's not turbocharger or an engine crankshaft. Clean it every time you come home from shooting it and lube sparingly with almost anything. You'll be fine.
I can't even find the stuff on Google; how good can it be??
Keller
Anyone use TNRL #5 Super Gun Lube with Rust Inhibitor? Good stuff. Thanks
JerryP -- you are absolutely right - NO MORE PARTY POOPING FOR ME!!! Especially from a guy who used to mix Blue Coral Wax and Simoniz paste wax to shine his 65 Malibu Jim
Mississippi River Mud Gun Grease!!!
Militech One sure is nice grease and oil. Makes me and my guns happy.
After reading this thread, I bought Lucas Red N Tacky and Super Lube. I have to say that I like Super Lube the best so far--it has a nice, silky texture.
It seems to me to be a slippery slope that we are heading down. Paul
I have a jar of STOS that I dated 1992 when I bought it at the Ill. State shoot. It has the same consistency now as then. STOS does have a tendancy when it is real hot and you shoot 50 to a station to run a little bit. I don't see any problem however. It does not change in the cold of Illinois winter however.

Yup... Dupont Krytox GPL 205. McMaster-Carr sells it. Whether or not you want to spend what it costs is gonna depend on how badly you want some of the best grease on the planet.

I used to run duck hunts on the Texas coast. The Super Lube spray was the only thing that kept my our shotguns from rusting. A typical day would be hunt in the AM, then fish the flats till 3:00 PM and then hunt till dark. That's a lot of time in the salt marsh.
I sell oil and grease for a living. I can get Castrol, Chevron, etc for free, but I buy the Super Lube grease and spray for my K-80 and TM-1.
Just my opinion, your milage may vary.

I want to beat this dead horse a little more. Penn as in Penn Reels makes reel grease for their reels, normally they are considered upper grade. 2 oz. for $6.95 and 1 lb. for $16.99. Has anyone tried reel grease? It certainly would be impervious to rain if you shot in the rain. Mike.

It's shiny white...looks almost oily but feels like most other synthetic greases; as I remember Super lube is clear. Super Lube uses a petroleum base mineral oil (according to their MSDS) while the Bel-ray grease is all synthetic. And I know that Bel-Ray doesn't make Super Lube.
Anyway, I know it's an over-kill for a shotgun but I'm also using it on my P-Ws and it lasts a lot longer on the guide posts than STOS or any white grease I've tried.

Keller, The description sounds similar to Super Lube. What color is it? The different brands of synthetic food grade grease are probably all very good.

JerryP,
No, I was recalled and got really busy and quit trying to chase down a dealer for the stuff.
What I DID get is a synthetic NLGI 1 food grade grease made by Bel-Ray called "No-Tox Minus 90". It's an aluminum complex base with PTFE and has a temp range from -90 to +300F with no viscosity change (like THAT"S handy). Ranks right with Nevastane in the 4-ball wear test for load, weld point and scar diameter and probably costs less. Got it from McMaster-Carr. I really like it...it's almost as good as Krytox GPL 205!

In my ever so humble opinion the grease/oil thing is way over done. Look at the mechanism thats being discussed. High grade steels, no real pressure issues and clearances that, while close are nothing compared to, say, a crank bearing. Im betting that vaseline would do the job that is actually required. I suppose that the parent company could put a picture of a quail on it and charge twice as much but it would still do the job. Im thinking its much adieu about nothing.

What you need to know about grease or oil is Film Strength, it,s ability to stay in place, Resistence to corrosion, Resistence to water, and viscosity
Thick greases are designed generally for heavy duty use , tacky or sticky greases are designed for open gear cases the stickeyness being necessary to stop the grease from flinging off, corosion reistance greases are necessary where moisture can get into the workings, and water resistant greases are designed to not lose thier lubricity when water is introduced into the workings, viscosity is the pour rate at certian temperatures.
In guns you need a grease where the viscosity is sufficient to allow the grease to stay in place in a range of ambient temperatures.
Film strenght is detirmened by the Rockwell tests and classifies lubricants as to how much pressure determined in FT LBS that the lubricant can stand without the film breaking down and allowing metal to metal contact.
Corrosion resistance is nesecarry in guns as some of the residue can, if left in place too long, cause corrosion, also where humitity is high.
Water resistance is something we need as we often shoot in the rain, normal greases break down when exposed to water and allow metal to metal contact.
A good grease is Mainlube 340
The base product is Pensylvania Crude which is a parafinic base oil that does no mix with water, it has one of the highest readings on the rockwell test, it stays in place, and it is corrosion resistant, Pensylvania Cruse is recognised as the best lubricating base product in the world.
There are many more oils out there that use Pensylvia Cruse as thier base product, Omega is another one, but they are not cheap.
There are also oils that are similar, personal preference will dictate whether you use oil or grease, the main thing is to know what your product specifications are.

I use Tri-Flow.....has Teflon, and won't "cook" out.
I don't know nuthin'.....but it seems to me that ANY grease creates a "cushion" between parts.....and that means those parts do not mate perfectly.....and maybe allows a gun to shoot loose quicker......but I can't prove it.

Get one of your wife's give-away makeup brushes, put a few drops of Marvel Mystery oil (or Rem Oil, or STP, or 3-in-1, or Mobil 1, or 10w-30, or ...) keep it in a cigar-tube in your guncase, swat the shiny parts occasionally.
Clean everything occasionally with Dawn dish soap and hot water (on another makeup brush) and leave it out of the case for an hour to dry.

The US Military spent millions developing MILITEC grease and oil. It was originally developed for use on the Gatling gun. Why would you use a oil or grease that was developed for use on automobiles? Kolar supplies CMD gun lub with their shotguns but I haven't tried it. Since my taxes paid for the development of MILITEC, that's what I use.

Mobil 1 synthetic grease works very well, but it a bear to get clean when the gun is ready for wipe down/cleaning.
Whiz on this site sells a product he calls ALube I believe it is. A white smooth grease that applies great, stays in place, works well and comes off when you are done without a chisel and hammer. I bought some in syringes for easy application, and some small jars to give them both a try. And it works fabulous on your loader as well.
If you are not 100% in love with your current lube, buy some from him and give it a test drive. I think you will find it first class.

From Giacomo's site:
2) How should I clean and oil my Perazzi? We recommend to clean the metal parts with Paint Thinner with 100% Mineral Spirits. Then, if possible blow off the mineral spirits completely with compressed air. Completely cover all metal surfaces with a small amount of oil. Then blow off the oil with compressed air, leaving a thin coat to protect the bluing. 3) When lubricating my gun, should I use grease or oil? Please use oil instead of grease. This advice has always worked for me!!

IMO, if your gun's manufactory includes a lubricant with their name on it, what makes you think you'll need to switch to something else?
Properly clean all the wear points are 10 times more important than what lubricant to use.
Imagine how does a engine run? How an automatic M16 rifle cycle it's bolt? What kind of lubricants they use? And how many times your shotgun open and close in a week? Do we need better lubricant than the other two?
I also agreed with MIA, as lubricant is concerned, more is not better.

Any lubricant with rust inhibitors will work fine.
The most important thing about lubricating your gun is to wipe off the old lube after EACH use and use fresh clean lube before EACH use.
Cleanliness is next to godliness.

It is true , they will all work. As 221 says, Super Lube is a very good grease. Synthetic food grade grease is the way to go. STOS is a little better from my experience with a tight Browning. If you don't mind wheel bearing grease all over your hands and clothes, buy the cheapest.

I will echo 'they all work' and really what you get with the 'specialty' greases is a neat applicator like a syringe to apply small amounts of grease where it is needed.
I use white lithium grease just because I can tell when the grease is getting dirty and needs to be cleaned off and replaced. For the applicator I use a 75 cc syringe originally sold as a marinate injector ($5). One syringe full lasts me a couple of years.

very interesting
Red and Tacky:
Lucas Red 'N' Tacky Grease is a smooth, tacky, red lithium complex grease fortified with rust and oxidation inhibitors. It has good water resistance and washout properties. It has excellent mechanical stability and storage life. It is able to withstand heavy loads for extended periods of time. It can be used in many agricultural, automotive and industrial applications. Lucas Red 'N' Tacky Grease is fortified with a high degree of extreme pressure additives that give it a TRUE Timken load much higher than other greases of this type. Its especially good for sliding surfaces and open gears.
Lucas Oil:
Lucas Oil Products is a manufacturer and distributor of automotive oil, additives, and lubricants. It was founded by trucker Forrest Lucas and his wife Charlotte in 1989.[1] Lucas Oil is not related to LUKOIL, a Russian-owned petroleum company that owns and operates gasoline stations throughout the Northeast USA. Nor is it related to Lucas Industries, a former British manufacturer of automotive and aerospace components. The company is a sponsor of several NASCAR, H1 Unlimited, NHRA and Indy Racing League events.[2] In 2005, Lucas Oil founded the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. On February 28, 2006 that Lucas Oil purchased the naming rights to the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana for $120 million over 20 years.[3] The facility opened in 2008 and is the home field for the NFL's Indianapolis Colts. Other events that have or will be held at the stadium include the 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four, the 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball Regional Finals, Super Bowl XLVI (February 5, 2012), the 2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four, and the 2016 NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four. In 2009, Lucas Oil founded the short course off-road racing series Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. In September 2011, the company bought specialty television channel MavTV to promote their motorsport championships.

Since you put it that way Super Lube looks like designer grease. Lucas Oils are a proven company with innovative products. But to each his own and as long as it works and prevent undue wear on bearing surfaces.

BTW, mcmaster.com has a pretty easy to understand overview of the many greases that are out there, good reference for those that are interested. Grease is just like motor oil, to the masses, it's all about marketing. To those that understand their individual requirements, it's about the material inside the package.

Designer grease, grease that someone bought from places like JD, McMaster Carr, or tractor supply and repackage it to make a fast buck from trapshooters.

Super Lube.....period. Don't be fooled by the designer greases, they're just someones grease in a different container, at 20 times the price.

I will second the Lucus Red "N" Tacky grease. I use it on all bearing surfaces and on my choke tubes.

Use super lube--the commercial fisherman use it , for their equipment---your gun hinges have in all reality zero load. Any clean grease will work

I own a Blaser F-3 unsingle trap. should I stay with grease that comes from Blaser or stay with I.e. Pro-Shot or Stoss? I believe Blasershotguns has silicone in their grease. my question is does all gun grease have a Silicon base? I remember in the Old Corps we used Lubriplate on everything,he'll we even used small Smudge Pots that burned oil so we could apply Eye Black when on the Range. god bless our troops and all trap shooters. I am new at trap but I have made many new friends participating in trap and other disciplines! Thanks to all for yor help!
